PLOT: Harry Scott (MORGAN FREEMAN) is a professor who, due to a family tragedy, is on an extended leave of absence from the university where he works. That worries his wife, Esther (JANE ALEXANDER), but Harry finds solace spending time with his friend Bradley Thomas (GREG KINNEAR) who runs a local coffee shop. Bradley is married to Kathryn (SELMA BLAIR), but her recent lesbian fling with Jenny (STANA KATIC) means the end of their marriage. His coffee shop employee, former addict Oscar (TOBY HEMINGWAY), has better luck with his relationship with new girlfriend and coworker, Chloe (ALEXA DAVALOS), something he can't say about his alcoholic father, Bat (FRED WARD), who doesn't like Chloe. Meanwhile, Bradley ends up falling for real estate agent Diana (RADHA MITCHELL), unaware that she's still having an affair with married man David (BILLY BURKE). As Harry observes all of those relationships, he must contend with his own as well as the effect the familial loss still has on him. WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT? Some teens might, especially if they're fans of someone in the cast, but beyond that, it's not likely. WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R For strong sexual content, nudity and language. CAST AS ROLE MODELS: MORGAN FREEMAN plays a professor who's on a leave of absence due to a prior family tragedy. He spends a lot of time hanging out with Bradley, offering advice and observations about love and relationships, all while dealing with his own with Esther. He drinks some. GREG KINNEAR plays his friend who runs a coffee shop but doesn't have much luck with relationships, as his two wives cheat on him. He also drinks. RADHA MITCHELL plays a real estate agent who dates and then marries Bradley, but continues having her affair with David. She smokes and uses profanity. TOBY HEMINGWAY plays Bradley's coffee shop employee, a former druggie, who ends up dating and sleeping with Chloe (and starring in a homemade porn flick for money, based on her idea). He also uses profanity and must contend with his abusive father. ALEXA DAVALOS plays his new girlfriend who sleeps with him (and convinces him to appear in a homemade porno movie for money), and uses strong profanity. JANE ALEXANDER plays Harry's wife who worries about him and his refusal to go back to work following their family tragedy. BILLY BURKE plays a married man who continues to have an affair with Diana despite both being married. He briefly gets abusive with her. SELMA BLAIR plays Bradley's first wife who ends up having a lesbian affair with Jenny. She leaves Bradley for her, and drinks. FRED WARD plays Oscar's alcoholic father who's mean and abusive to him and Chloe, with him threatening her. STANA KATIC plays the woman who seduces Kathryn into a lesbian affair with her. CAST, CREW, & TECHNICAL INFO HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit? Then read OUR TAKE of this film. OUR WORD TO PARENTS: The following is a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated dramedy. Profanity consists of at least 9 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue is present, as are various sexual encounters and behavior (straight and lesbian) that include nudity and related movement. Nonsexual nudity (female full frontal and rear, male rear) is also seen. A man cuts off the tip of his finger (with bloody results) and another threatens a woman with a knife and later gets punched in the face for preparing to do the same (with bloody results). Other bad attitudes are present, including people cheating on their spouses, while tense family material also includes familial deaths and strained relationships. Various characters drink (one to the point of drunkenness), one smokes, and one is noted as being a former drug addict (with related talk). For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there's some of that from lightning during a daytime scene. For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there's some handheld camera footage in the film. ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE Harry, Bradley, and Kathryn have beer in a bar where others also drink. Harry pours some wine. Harry pours wine for Esther and himself. Oscar says his mom took off when he was just in junior high school and that his father often gets "sh*t-faced" (drunk). Chloe thinks that Oscar is a druggie, and mentions coke, ecstasy and heroin, with him saying "Why not?" He mentions being wasted in the past but then having a dream that caused him to stop using, and that he's now 7 months clean. Bradley and Kathryn have wine with dinner. Diana carries a glass of wine after having sex with David. Bat drives while drunk (and we hear the sound of loose bottles in his truck). He partially parks on the lawn, and is upset that Oscar has moved out. Spoiler Alert: We learn that Harry and Esther's son died of a heroin overdose in the past year or so (thus explaining Harry's leave of absence from teaching). We see Chloe's roommate collecting empty bottles in their house. Bradley pours wine for Esther, Harry, and himself. Diana has wine, and then comments that all she and David do is have sex, drink wine, and have sex. People have champagne and wine at a wedding reception, and Bradley later pours more for himself and Diana. Bradley, David, and others have beer at a social gathering. BLOOD/GORE It sounds like we hear a dog fart. Bradley plays around with a kitchen knife and then purposefully cuts off the tip of one finger. We hear but don't see the actual cut, but do see a bloody towel or similar fabric wrapped around his hand. Bat has a bloody nose after Harry punches him. DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE Despite knowing Kathryn is married to Bradley, Jenny repeatedly comes on to her, and Kathryn then has a sexual affair with her, eventually leaving Bradley. Bat has a bad attitude toward his son as well as Chloe. Thinking she's gotten over her dog phobia and dislike, Bradley gets her a dog as a present, thus angering her. After Bradley asks his sister, Aggie, to watch the dog he's gotten for Kathryn, Aggie informs him that they've decided to keep the dog for themselves. Bradley then tries taking the dog in secret, and when his young nephew catches him, Bradley offers to pay him, but the boy holds out for more money (played for comedy). Diana carries on a sexual affair with David despite him being married to another woman. She also does so after getting involved with and then marrying Bradley. She and David also have a falling out involving brief verbal and physical abuse. When Chloe laments not having enough money, her female roommate mentions a business opportunity. We then see Chloe asking Harry for his advice (about making a sex tape for $1,000 with Oscar), saying that it's not something they don't already do (have sex). Bat confronts Chloe at her door when she returns from shopping. He calls her a "bitch," pulls a knife, threatens to open her face with it, and then stabs it into her grocery bag to intimidate her. About how things have turned out badly, Harry says that God either is dead or despises people. Some viewers might not like that sentiment, but Bradley replies that God doesn't hate people, as He wouldn't have otherwise made their hearts so brave. FRIGHTENING SCENES Bat confronts Chloe at her door when she returns from shopping. He calls her a "bitch," pulls a knife, threatens to open her face with it, and then stabs it into her grocery bag to intimidate her. Chloe visits a fortuneteller who seems disturbed by the signals of pending doom she reads for Oscar. Chloe then returns home and sees Oscar asleep, worried that he might be dead. Bradley plays around with a kitchen knife and then purposefully cuts off the tip of one finger. We hear but don't see the actual cut, but do see a bloody towel or similar fabric wrapped around his hand. Spoiler Alert: A major character collapses during a game of touch football. A doctor tries to revive him, and others try to rush him to help, but a traffic jam prevents that. We then see that person's funeral. Bat is outside Chloe's house at night, holding a knife he wants to use on her, but Harry intercedes, punching Bat and then stepping down onto his hand. We see Kathryn and Jenny lying in a face-to-face embrace (on their sides) on a bed. Both are fully nude, but all we see are bare breasts as well as a passionate kiss before the scene ends. Oscar and Chloe passionately kiss and sex is implied. She then gets up and we see her bare breasts and then full frontal and rear nudity as Bat surprises her at Oscar's bedroom door. Oscar then gets up, and while he hurriedly dresses, we briefly see his full rear nudity. We see a sketch of Kathryn on the wall (presumably done by Bradley) that shows bare breasts. Trying to figure out why Kathryn left him for Jenny, Bradley tells Harry that he "made love to her on a regular basis." We see Oscar and Chloe starting to strip in an empty, outdoor stadium at night. We see her bare breasts and them passionately kissing. This is inter-cut with another scene showing the two in bed, talking, under the covers (and presumably nude -- we see his bare chest). When we see the stadium scene again, Chloe is on top of Oscar having sex, with movement and distant views of her bare breasts and the side of her bare butt. We see Diana having sex with a man while standing up against a window, and we initially think it's Bradley (as they've just met), but we then see that it's really David. Harry jokes with Chloe about Esther being a passionate woman with needs. We see Diana in her cleavage-revealing bra as she's getting dressed, and she jokingly tells Bradley that he was her first (sexual partner) on their wedding night. Both are clothed, but we see Oscar on top of Chloe on the bed, with her legs around him. Diana removes her wedding ring and then meets David (to continue their affair, and we see them kiss). Chloe wears a midriff-revealing top under which we can see the shape of her nipples. From a long distance away, Harry spots a couple having sex in the middle of a football field at night (too far away for nudity details, but thrusting is seen with the man on top).
