QUICK TAKE:
Suspense/Thriller: A seemingly paranoid and delusional soldier convinces a lonely waitress that she too is infected by parasitic bugs as both hole up in a seedy motel room.
PLOT:
Agnes White (ASHLEY JUDD) is a lonely waitress who works at a lesbian bar in a remote town where her only friend appears to be fellow waitress R.C. (LYNN COLLINS). Agnes lives in a seedy motel room, and thinks that repeated prank telephone calls are being made by Jerry Gross (HARRY CONNICK JR.), her recently paroled ex-husband who she isn't happy to see when he eventually shows up.

To the contrary, she's warily enticed by Peter Evans (MICHAEL SHANNON), a seemingly reserved guy R.C. brings over to the motel room for a little partying. Reserved and stating he's only looking for a friend and not sex, Peter starts hanging out with Agnes, much to the disdain of the bullying Jerry who briefly stops by before heading off for several days.

When Peter and Agnes do end up sleeping together, however, he starts to exhibit some odd behavior, particularly regarding some bed bugs he claims are biting him, but which she cannot see. Yet, he's so positive that he's being bitten, that he eventually convinces Agnes that she is too, a point R.C. can't believe despite seeing what look like bad bite marks on Peter.

With his eventual confession about his past and his allegations of what's really occurring -- that involve a certain Dr. Sweet (BRIAN F. O'BYRNE) -- Peter ends up dragging Agnes with him in a downward spiral of delusions and paranoia that threaten to do as much or more harm than the bugs with which they believe they're infected.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
The previews make this look like a horror film (in terms of some sort of insect or otherworldly invaders), so those on the lookout for that might be intrigued, but younger kids probably won't.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For some strong violence, sexuality, nudity, language and drug use.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
Considering what occurs in the film, it's unlikely many parents would consider any of the characters as good role models for kids.

HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated suspense/thriller. Profanity consists of at least 68 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue is present, as are views of a sexual encounter (with nudity, sounds, and movement). Nonsexual nudity (including male and female full frontal) also occurs, while some minor and miscellaneous characters are noted as being lesbians.

Violence consists of a man stabbing another to death, two people apparently committing suicide by dousing themselves with fuel that's then ignited, some striking of others, as well as self-inflicted wounds including a disturbing scene featuring a man yanking out his own teeth without sedation, etc. Some of those scenes have bloody results, and may be rather unsettling or suspenseful to viewers, as might other moments in the film where it's initially unclear what is happening or might occur.

Some potentially dangerous behavior may be enticing for some kids to imitate, while various characters smoke, drink, and/or use drugs (pot and cocaine, the latter off-screen). Varying degrees of bad attitudes are present, including from a man who won't let his ex-wife be (and strikes her), while there's talk of their young son who disappeared long ago.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, a great deal of handheld camera movement occurs in the film. We also see a close-up view of a spinning ceiling fan (that might induce such a reaction in some viewers).

ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Agnes gathers up some empty wine bottles and then opens a new one.
  • Agnes buys liquor in a store.
  • Various people drink in a lesbian bar, including Agnes and R.C. who drink one shot each while working.
  • Back at Agnes' motel room home, we see lines of cocaine on a mirror, and Agnes and R.C. appear high. Later, Agnes smokes pot, while R.C. has a drink. After R.C. leaves, Agnes has a drink and says that people who don't drink make her nervous (referring to Peter).
  • Spotting the cocaine in Agnes' motel room, Jerry asks, "Still snorting this sh*t?" and then rubs some on his gums.
  • In response to Jerry having just struck her and then left, and despite it being the morning, Agnes asks Peter to fix her a vodka and coke. She then briefly smokes pot.
  • Agnes and R.C. return to the former's motel room carrying beer and other liquor.
  • Jerry comments on initially believing Peter was a coke (cocaine) loving "son of a bitch."
  • Dr. Sweet asks Agnes if he can have a drink, and she says no. He then spots her pot pipe, asks how often she hits that thing, and she replies as often as she likes. He then asks if he can use it, and she says, "Suit yourself." He then lights it up and smokes some.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • We see a presumably dead and bloody body on the floor.
  • We see a side view of Agnes sitting on the toilet, urinating (we see the side of her bare thigh and part of her bare butt, while also hearing a slight urination sound).
  • Jerry backhands Agnes to the floor, bloodying her nose and the corner of her mouth.
  • We see an internal, microscopic view of blood and/or other fluids moving through a person's body.
  • Peter states that the military conducted experiments on him and others that made them vomit and have diarrhea (not seen).
  • Peter uses a needle to prick his finger to draw some blood for examination.
  • Jerry fondly recalls someone who "took a sh*t" off a balcony in the past.
  • Peter lifts his shirt to prove to R.C. that he's being bitten by bugs, and he has various small bloody cuts all over his torso.
  • Agnes has some red and slightly bloody "bug bites" on her skin.
  • Thinking he has bugs in his teeth, Peter starts yanking them out, causing him pain, and with bloody results. Agnes tries to convince him to stop, but he continues in a very graphic and disturbing fashion (with additional pain and lots of blood).
  • Peter walks out, very bloody, and holds a knife that has blood on the end. After holding that knife on another man, Peter suddenly stabs him in the gut several times, then the back, and then the gut again on the floor (in a graphic and bloody fashion). Peter then tastes that blood, trying to convince Agnes it's synthetic and that the man isn't real.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Someone keeps calling Agnes and then not saying anything.
  • Phrases such as "Homo," "Big dyke," "You a homo?" "Little queer gal," and "You're not going queer on me, are you?" are used (sometimes by those who are gay, sometimes not).
  • Jerry backhands Agnes to the floor, bloodying her nose and the corner of her mouth. Jerry then nudges Peter out of the way when the latter arrives after that blow.
  • Jerry takes Agnes' money.
  • Peter states that the military conducted experiments on him and others that made them vomit and have diarrhea. He then admits that he's AWOL (from a military facility stateside where he was being held and examined).
  • Jerry has a bad attitude for letting himself back in Agnes' life, as well as trying to intimidate Peter.
  • Peter kills a man while suffering from a delusion that makes him think the man is not real.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence," "Blood/Gore" and "Jump Scenes" may be unsettling, suspenseful, or scary to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material.
  • Jerry backhands Agnes to the floor, bloodying her nose and the corner of her mouth. Jerry then nudges Peter out of the way when the latter arrives after that blow.
  • Those creeped out by the thought of bed bugs and such might not like the film's overall premise.
  • Peter states there are people who are after him.
  • As soon as Agnes sees things Peter's way, their room starts to violently shake as we hear chopper sounds from somewhere above them.
  • Agnes uses a safety pin to try to extract a "bug" from her skin (not seen in close-up).
  • Peter tries to swipe away the unseen bugs on his body, eventually seemingly having convulsions from his reaction.
  • Thinking he has bugs in his teeth, Peter starts yanking them out, causing him pain, and with bloody results. Agnes tries to convince him to stop, but he continues in a very graphic and disturbing fashion (with additional pain and lots of blood).
  • After holding a knife on another man, Peter suddenly stabs that man in the gut several times, then the back, and then the gut again on the floor (in a graphic and bloody fashion). Peter then tastes that blood, trying to convince Agnes it's synthetic and that the man isn't real.
  • Agnes and Peter are nervous when a pizza delivery person arrives at their door. They slip money through the door and then cautiously open it to retrieve and then examine that pizza.
  • As Jerry tries to get into the motel room, Agnes and Peter's view from the inside is that of chaos and violence, including the room violently shaking as they try to barricade the door. As Jerry gets his hand in the door, a stapler is used on his hand, causing him pain.

  • We see that Peter and Agnes have covered her motel room in aluminum foil to try to block any sort of transmission from the bugs.
  • A couple spreads fuel in a room, strip until they're fully nude, kneel, and then pour that fuel on themselves. They then light a match and the room is instantly engulfed in flames (we don't see their bodies on fire).

  • After Peter says he's from Beaver, Agnes jokes, "We're all from beaver, aren't we?"
  • Agnes shows cleavage in her tank-top.
  • We see a side view of Agnes sitting on the toilet, urinating (we see the side of her bare thigh and part of her bare butt, while also hearing a slight urination sound).
  • We see Agnes in her nightgown, including when she's seated with her legs spread, providing a view down between her thighs that nearly gets to her crotch. The upper part of the nightgown is also open a little, providing views of her chest (but not her breasts).

  • Peter matter-of-factly tells Agnes that he hasn't been to bed with a woman for a long time, but thinks he could with her. She then tells him, "Come here, boy." He does, and we then see various artsy views of them having sex, including a close-up of them making out, hands running down some bare skin, his mouth going onto her nipple, and then a close-up view of her breast as she's on top on him having sex (with some implied movement, as well as sweat on her skin), and then a nearly full side view of her on top of him, still having sex. During this, we hear her pleasured sexual sounds, and see the related expression on her face.
  • After having sex, we see various views of Peter being fully nude as he searches for bugs in their bed. Most have him crouched down so nothing is seen, but we do occasionally see brief glimpses of his full frontal and rear nudity. As he stands nude in front of her, she comments on him having a nice body and he returns the compliment. She then comments on the disappointment of seeing some people naked. We then see his full rear nudity, and then him walking toward the camera, holding his clothes over/in front of his crotch before sitting down to dress.
  • Jerry asks Peter, "You're pretty much just jacking off here, aren't you?" The question, however, isn't meant literally in terms of sexual behavior.
