QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: A man, his pregnant wife, and her two kids move into a country home, unaware that it's going to be in need of constant repairs.
PLOT:
Now that he's married his former girlfriend, Suzanne (NIA LONG), and adopted her two kids, 13-year-old Lindsey (ALEISHA ALLEN) and her younger brother Kevin (PHILIP BOLDEN), Nick Persons (ICE CUBE) thinks it's time for them to move into a bigger place. Having sold his sports store so that he can publish his own sports magazine, Nick convinces an uncertain Suzanne and a very reluctant Lindsey that they should move from his small city apartment to a big house out in the country.

Local real estate agent Chuck Mitchell Jr. (JOHN C. McGINLEY) is quite eager to show them a 19th century fixer-upper that initially appears to be in decent shape. After signing on the bottom line, however, they realize the place is going to be in need of constant repairs, many of them major.

Enter contractor Chuck Mitchell Jr. (again, JOHN C. McGINLEY) who seems to suffer from some form of split personality disorder where he only acts like the persona that goes along with whatever the related hat he's wearing might be. Nick isn't pleased by that development or that Chuck's also the official inspector or trained midwife, and thus tries to do things by himself and/or on the cheap, thus resulting in bigger messes.

With Chuck bringing in an entire crew of subcontractors who proceed to tear the place up, and as Suzanne gets nearer to delivering their expected twins, Nick tries to retain his composure as one home-based disaster after another occurs under and all around his roof.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of the first film ("Are We There Yet?"), they probably will.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG
For some innuendos and brief language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • ICE CUBE plays an independent sports magazine publisher who's happy to be married to Suzanne, but not crazy about having her two kids underfoot, especially in his small apartment. Accordingly, he arranges to buy an old, fixer-upper out in the country, only to discover that it's really a money pit in terms of needed repairs. Irked at the many roles Chuck plays in the process, he tries to keep his cool, but mostly comes off as an unlikable guy. He does some drinking in one scene.
  • NIA LONG plays his wife who's pregnant with twins who's initially reluctant about buying the place, but changes her mind and likes having Chuck around, mainly because he's a trained midwife.
  • JOHN C. McGINLEY plays the local real estate agent who sells the Persons the house, but then also wears various hats in the remodeling and other processes. Seemingly a likable guy, he's really taking advantage of Nick, but his behavior is explained late in the film.
  • ALEISHA ALLEN plays Suzanne's 13-year-old daughter who doesn't want to leave her life and friends back in the city for their "new" country house. After a while, however, she fits in.
  • PHILIP BOLDEN plays her younger brother who doesn't have as much of an initial problem fitting in as does she.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this comedy that's been rated PG. Profanity consists of a minor expletive, while various colorful phrases are uttered. Sexually related innuendo is present (and will likely go over very young kids' heads), while a woman shows cleavage in various scenes, the top of man's butt crack is briefly seen, and there's a brief bit where a husband checks his pregnant wife's crotch to see if the baby's head is crowning (we don't see anything).

Various bits of physical comedy and other slapstick style material is present (including two men briefly fighting), and a bird is accidentally shot by a nail gun. Some encounters with wildlife might be unsettling or suspenseful to the youngest of viewers, but it's all played for comedy.

Various bad attitudes are present, as are various bits of potentially imitative behavior. Some crude humor occurs, as do some lightly played tense family scenes, while some drinking is also present. Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there are some flashes of lightning during a storm.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there is some camera movement from time to time in the film.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Nick has a beer in a bar and then tells the bartender to pour him (Nick), himself (the bartender) and others a shot. When Suzanne shows up and announces they're having twins, Nick downs both shots, tries to get more (the bartender takes away the bottle) and then drinks his beer.
  • Various people drink at a party.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Delighted to see he'll have his own private toilet, Nick sits on that, clothed.
  • About their dog being missing, Nick states that there are lots of trees out there for it to pee on.
  • Chuck picks up a piece of raccoon excrement and comments on what's in it.
  • We hear some intestinal rumblings from within Nick and then a few farts, but the expected diarrhea scene never occurs.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Nick isn't completely happy having Suzanne's kids underfoot and making messes in his apartment.
  • Lindsey has a bit of a bad attitude (standard teen stuff).
  • Chuck senses that Suzanne is pregnant and puts his hand on her belly (without first asking).
  • Regardless of whether he suffers from some sort of split-personality disorder, Chuck takes advantage of Nick in terms of "fixing" his house.
  • When Chuck asks Nick what he thinks about the house, the latter says it's a little high-priced and that Chuck is a little weird.
  • Nick tells some drywall men, "You're kinda fat," so he wants them to wear protective booties over their shoes. The male teen with them, who's been eyeing Lindsey, says "Nice booty," but then holds up the plastic foot covering.
  • Some viewers might not like some jokes about blind plumbers working on the job, or them later missing their plates with food at a picnic.
  • Lindsey sneaks off to a party without telling her parents (she's only 13). When Nick removes her from that party, she tells him, "I hate you."
  • Fed up with what's occurred, Nick chases after Chuck with a long piece of trim and then repeatedly tries to hit him with it.
  • There's some tension between Nick and Suzanne over the house and how Nick is reacting to various problems related to it. He eventually says they wouldn't be stuck in the place if not for her and those ungrateful kids. That causes her to get mad, say they need some time apart, pack up some stuff, and move into the guesthouse along with their kids (they eventually make up).
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed here might be unsettling or suspenseful to the youngest of viewers, but few others as it's all played for goofy laughs.
  • A small deer growls at Nick and bares its teeth, causing him and the kids to run away in fright.
  • While kayaking, we see the fins of something large pass by Nick. When he accidentally rolls over in the kayak, he sees a large fish headed his direction in the murky water. Both scream and the fish swims away.
  • A bat suddenly flies out at Nick from the fireplace, and Nick causes a bit of damage trying to hit it. Just then, a swarm of bats flies out from the same, eventually chasing Nick out of the house.
  • A lightning bolt nearly hits Nick.
  • While fishing, Kevin's line goes taut and he's suddenly yanked off the dock and into the water. Nick jumps in after him, saves the boy, and then wrestles with the large fish, eventually getting it up onto the dock.
  • Suzanne goes into labor, but it's all played for comedy.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Chuck uses some flare guns to scare away some bats.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "Oh my G-O-D," "And you're a little weird," "Back-talking sass mouths," "Flag on the play," "Oh crap," "You should know not to play with a man's nuts" (meaning nuts, not testicles, although the film is playing with that sounding like the latter), "Sucker," "Holla," "Don't be a hick," "Nice booty," "Peeka-bra" (or something like that, but not having anything to do with a bra), "It's a tankless job," "Holy moly," "Nick-aru," "He's an idiot," "Those guys will drive you batty" (said about bats), "That is insane," "Shut up," "You ignorant mutt" and "I screwed your life up."
  • Nick repeatedly makes little popping sounds in one scene.
  • Lindsey lies on the street in front of Nick's SUV, trying to keep them from moving away.
  • Kevin throws his clothes around his bedroom in glee.
  • A miscellaneous person has spiked hair.
  • A miscellaneous young woman has a tattoo on her arm.
  • Chuck has a Los Angeles Lakers tattoo on his shoulder.
  • Kevin grabs a nail gun and blindly fires off several rounds into the air. We hear a bird squawk and then fall dead to the floor.
  • Lindsey sneaks off to a party without telling her parents (she's only 13). When Nick removes her from that party, she tells him, "I hate you."
  • We see Chuck and a few other men shirtless at a party where they sport body paint and maneuver various lit torches (in a Hawaiian ceremonial fashion).
  • Nick works on repairing the roof during a thunderstorm.
  • Chuck wears some small shorts while doing some speed walking.
  • To wake up Nick after he faints (and following the orders of Chuck on the phone), Lindsey pours some hot sauce into Nick's mouth, thus rousing him.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • A bat suddenly flies out at Nick from the fireplace, and Nick causes a bit of damage trying to hit it. Just then, a swarm of bats flies out from the same, eventually chasing Nick out of the house.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • A mild amount of playfully done suspenseful and dramatic music plays in the film.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • None.
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 1 crap, 5 uses of "Oh my God," 2 of "Oh God" and 1 use each of "For God's sakes" and "God."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • Suzanne shows varying amounts of cleavage in various outfits throughout most of the movie.
  • When Suzanne announces she's pregnant, Nick replies, "By who?"
  • Suzanne suggestively tells Nick that there are a lot of rooms in their new house that are going to need breaking in. When he asks about the roof they're on, she says that's a good place to start, but nothing happens as he ends up falling off it.
  • Suzanne suggestively tells Nick there's one thing they haven't been able to do in the house yet. He's not really paying attention and mentions something about the insulation, with her replying she was thinking of something else to keep warm (but they're interrupted before anything else happens).
  • Nick tells some drywall men "You're kinda fat," so he wants them to wear protective booties over their shoes. The male teen with them, who's been eyeing Lindsey, says "Nice booty," but then holds up the plastic foot covering.
  • We see Chuck shirtless while out on the water.
  • We briefly see the top of a male worker's butt crack in close-up.
  • Lindsey does some slightly sexualized dancing at a party with a slightly older boy (she's only 13). On the way to get her from that, Chuck talks of being at that age with stolen kisses and sometimes more than that, none of which sits well with Nick.
  • We see Chuck and a few other men shirtless at a party where they sport body paint and maneuver various lit torches (in a Hawaiian ceremonial fashion).
  • When Suzanne mentions babies (meaning she's about to deliver their twins), Nick doesn't realize that and replies, "We can work on that once you drop those two."
  • Suzanne goes into labor, Chuck tells Nick (on the phone) to see if the head is crowning, but when Nick goes to look (and lifts up her shirt as she lies down with her legs spread), he faints from the sight (we don't see anything).
  • Chuck wears some small shorts while doing some speed walking.
  • SMOKING
  • None.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • There's some tension between Nick and Suzanne over the house and how Nick is reacting to various problems related to it. He eventually says they wouldn't be stuck in the place if not for her and those ungrateful kids. That causes her to get mad, say they need some time apart, pack up some stuff, and move into the guesthouse along with their kids (they eventually make up).

  • A bat suddenly flies out at Nick from the fireplace, and Nick causes a bit of damage trying to hit it.
  • Nick picks up a chipmunk and lets it sit on the palm of his hand, but an owl suddenly swoops through and grabs it.

  • Nick walks face-first into a glass door and knocks himself down.
  • Nick accidentally hits his hand or finger with a hammer.
