QUICK TAKE:
Drama/Action: Desperate for money to keep his farm operational, a down-on-his-luck, 19th century rancher agrees to transport a legendary and dangerous robber to a train that will take him to prison.
PLOT:
It's years after the American Civil War and former Union sharpshooter Dan Evans (CHRISTIAN BALE) is trying to keep businessman Hollander (LENNIE LOFTIN) from taking his ranch due to overdue loans. If that and Hollander's men burning down his barn aren't bad enough, Dan -- who lost a leg in the war -- is tired of how his boys, 14-year-old William (LOGAN LERMAN) and his younger, tuberculosis-suffering brother Mark (BENJAMIN PETRY), look at him either in disdain or disappointment, and how his wife, Alice (GRETCHEN MOL), simply doesn't look at him anymore.

Accordingly, and desperate to save both his ranch and family, Dan makes the risky choice of helping capture notorious robber and murderer Ben Wade (RUSSELL CROWE). He and his motley gang, including resident psychopath Charlie Prince (BEN FOSTER), recently knocked off yet another stagecoach, leaving security man Byron McElroy (PETER FONDA) wounded but determined to bring the robbers to justice.

Alongside Doc Potter (ALAN TUDYK) and others who work for railroad man Grayson Butterfield (DALLAS ROBERTS) who wants the robberies to stop, Dan sets off from home with Ben in tow, attempting to transport him to Contention where he'll be boarded on the 3:10 pm train to the federal prison in Yuma.

Between having to cross through dangerous Apache territory while also dealing with Charlie and the others, Dan knows the journey will be fraught with danger and death. Yet, and with few options, Dan continues on his quest, determined to accomplish the task at hand, all while being forced to interact with the charismatic but deadly robber.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of Westerns or anyone in the cast, they probably will.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For violence and some language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • CHRISTIAN BALE plays a down-on-his-luck rancher who lost his lower leg in the Civil War and now worries about losing his ranching operation, not to mention the respect of his wife and kids. Accordingly, he agrees to help transport Ben to the train in exchange for pay. Along the way, he ends up wounding and killing many criminals and others who desire to kill him.
  • RUSSELL CROWE plays a legendary criminal and murderer whose notorious reputation precedes him wherever he goes. He leads another stagecoach robbery, kills various people, has sex with a barkeep, and finds a slight soft spot in his heart for Dan and his plight.
  • BEN FOSTER plays his second in charge, a psychopath who kills many people and leads the rescue attempt to retrieve his boss.
  • PETER FONDA plays a stagecoach guard and bounty hunter who uses strong profanity, is cantankerous, and ends up wounded but keeps going in his quest to bring Ben to justice.
  • LOGAN LERMAN plays Dan's 14-year-old son who doesn't hold his father in a favorable light, disobeys rules by joining the mission, and uses profanity.
  • GRETCHEN MOL plays Dan's wife who worries about him and his newest job.
  • BENJAMIN PETRY plays their younger son who suffers from tuberculosis.
  • DALLAS ROBERTS plays a railroad official who's paying Dan and the others to transport Ben.

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a brief summary of the content found in this action-filled drama that's been rated R. Profanity consists of at least 2 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are uttered. • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence" and/or "Blood/Gore" may be unsettling and/or suspenseful to viewers, particularly those with low tolerance levels for such material.
  • Hollander's men set fire to Dan's barn at night, with Dan and William racing out to rescue their horses and such. Dan then has to stop William from reentering the burning building, just as it collapses in front of them. William is then about to shoot one of Hollander's men (from a distance), but Dan stops him.
  • Ben's men surround a stagecoach transporting a large sum of money. A gun battle breaks out between parties on both sides (with people being hit, with varying bloody results), including a Gatling gun being used on the coach to blast various attackers. During this, Byron fires a shot at a bag of dynamite, thus causing an explosion that kills the attacking rider and his horse. Ben then uses Dan's stolen cattle to stampede in front of the stagecoach, causing it to crash (with two men being thrown from it, while at least one is still inside as it flips over). Charlie then shoots two guards dead, and then shoots Byron in the gut, wounding him (with bloody results). They then use dynamite to blow the coach open and then a pistol to shoot off a lock to get to the money inside. One guard then holds a gun on one attacker, but Ben shoots both of them (his man in the chest, the guard in the head).
  • While holding Ben in his house at night before transporting him, Dan and others hear gunshots outside the house. They rush out, and find one guard firing shots off into the hillside, thinking he's seen something.
  • As everyone sleeps, Ben repeatedly stabs a small fork into one guard's neck, mortally wounding him (with bloody results). Byron then knocks Ben to the ground where he repeatedly punches and pummels him, bloodying his face (Ben then spits out some blood).
  • A stagecoach driver is shot dead, and the man inside shoots Charlie, grazing his neck. Charlie then grabs that man, disarms him, and then sets fire to the locked stagecoach. The man inside burns alive (we see him panic initially, but don't see the actual burning or death).
  • Ben knocks Byron off his horse, hits him, grabs his rifle, and then kicks him twice. Ben then throws Byron off a cliff (we don't see the impact) and then has his gun on the others, but William is suddenly there, holding his gun on Ben. When Ben says he won't shoot, the teenager fires a warning shot and then aims the gun at him again.
  • At night and in the wild, Ben and Dan hear noises, with the latter being hit by a gunshot (he has some blood on the side of his head). More gunfire is fired at them, followed by Ben sneaking off into the darkness to shoot two Apaches dead and slice the throat of another (mostly in the dark).
  • As Dan and others are holed up in a hotel room holding Ben, Charlie and the rest of the gang arrive in town. After being tipped off to their whereabouts, Charlie announces that they'll pay anyone who helps them kill the good guys, and he has many takers. That scares the local marshal and his men, who back out of helping Dan and the others (meaning they're now severely outnumbered). Realizing that, Butterfield also quits, leaving just Dan and his son to take on everyone else.
  • Dan tries to escort Ben to the train station, despite the latter's gang being everywhere and heavily armed. Gunshots then ring out, and the two take cover, while Dan returns fire, both at Ben's gang and locals who've joined the hunt. Dan hits several, as does Charlie who starts shooting the locals who are now in his way. Dan and Ben move to another location, where the latter is apparently hit, with some blood splattering onto a wall. After Dan shoots another man, Ben throws him to the ground and announces he's had enough. Dan then tackles Ben and they struggle, with Ben hitting Dan several times before starting to strangle him (he eventually stops).
  • As Ben and Dan race across a roof, guns are fired at them. They then jump from one roof to another, then slide off that, and fall to the ground.
  • A man shoots another many times in the torso, bloodying his shirt and mortally wounding him.
  • William aims his gun at Ben, but after a few tense moments, he can't shoot him.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Pistols/Rifles/Gatling gun/Knife/Dynamite: Carried and/or used to threaten, wound, or kill others and/or cause property damage. See "Violence" for details.

We next see Ben sketching her while she's in bed (and she now isn't uncomfortable about what they've just done). The sketch shows the top of her bare butt and full bare back, while the real shot shows her bare back.
