QUICK TAKE:
Dramedy: An unmarried couple tries to rekindle their romance with a trip to Italy, but must contend with the ramifications of a two-day stopover in Paris where they stay with her parents and meet several of her former lovers.
PLOT:
The relationship between Marion (JULIE DELPY) and Jack (ADAM GOLDBERG) has seen better days, but they're trying to rekindle their passion by a trip to Italy. On their way back to New York where she's a photographer and he's an interior designer, they decide to spend two days in Paris where they'll stay with her parents, Anna (MARIE PILLET) and Jeannot (ALBERT DELPY). Unlike her sister, Rose (ALEXIA LANDEAU), Marion is something of a neurotic mess, unsure of what she wants from a relationship, while Jack is an opinionated hypochondriac, meaning the two often clash.

That's further exacerbated when they run into some of Marion's former lovers, such as Mathieu (ADAN JODOROWSKY) who's still fixated on her, and Manu (ALEX NAHON), a writer who has no problem discussing with Jack his past sexual history regarding Marion, and would like to stay with them in New York. As the two days wear on, Marion and Jack must contend with the various external and internal issues that threaten to ruin their relationship.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Teenagers into the art house scene might be interested, as might those who are fans of anyone in the cast. Otherwise, it's unlikely.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For sexual content, some nudity and language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • JULIE DELPY plays a neurotic photographer who doesn't realize that her renewed contact with past lovers bothers Jack. It's implied she was promiscuous in the past, and she uses strong profanity.
  • ADAM GOLDBERG plays her interior designer boyfriend, a hypochondriac who's also worried about terrorists. His attention, however, focuses on Marion's renewed contact with some of her former lovers. Heavily tattooed, he smokes, drinks, and uses strong profanity.
  • MARIE PILLET plays Marion's mother who has no problem intruding into their bedroom or indicating she was just as randy as her daughter.
  • ALBERT DELPY plays Marion's flamboyant father who runs an erotic art gallery, and scratches cars that are partially parked on the sidewalks.
  • ALEXIA LANDEAU plays Marion's sister.
  • ADAN JODOROWSKY plays one of Marion's former lovers who's still fixated on her.
  • ALEX NAHON plays another former lover of hers who talks about just that with Jack and wants to stay with them in New York.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there are varying amounts of handheld camerawork in the film.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Wanting to take an artsy photo of Marion, Jack tells her to pretend she's on drugs. When she asks what kind, he replies, "Heroin, of course."
  • Jack, Marion, and her parents have wine with dinner.
  • Thinking he's sick, Jack asks if they can buy codeine in France, with Marion saying no, but then jokes about him getting some heroin over the counter.
  • About a photo Jack has found, Marion says that she, the man in it, and others there were all drunk.
  • Miscellaneous people have drinks at an art gallery.
  • Miscellaneous people drink at a party where Jack has beer and then later, a drink. Marion also drinks.
  • Jack states that he's hung-over from the night before.
  • Jack orders a beer.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • After declaring the bathroom unsafe due to mold issues, Marion sarcastically says that they'll just "sh*t" in the corner of the room, with Jack saying they'll "sh*t" outside.
  • Seeing Jack with a thermometer in his mouth, Marion says she doesn't use that one in the mouth, with Jack being disgusted and commenting on her still using it "up your ass."
  • Marion's dad holds up a dead, skinned rabbit. They later have rabbit stew, with her stating her dad likes the head, which we see on a spoon (it's small and hard to discern).
  • Marion says her dad has named her cat "Eat-Sh*t-Sleep."
  • Rose comments on returning to one of her young subjects in the past, finding her chair wet from his urine, and wanting to cut off his penis.
  • Jack complains about them not having sex, with Marion saying it's because of him being sick, prompting him to comment on whether she'd want to get on top of him while he's on the toilet "sh*tting."
  • We see a dead piglet that's seemingly been gutted, a large tongue from an animal, and a dead animal being hacked in two the long way, all in a food market.
  • Marion is concerned about using twice as much toilet paper as men since women wipe after they pee.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Jack tells some tourists the wrong way to the Louvre, not only because he doesn't appreciate them as tourists, but also so that they'll leave the cab line, thus moving him and Marion to the front of it.
  • Some viewers might not like the film's left-leaning stance, including some repeated jabs at the Bush administration. That includes Jack's comment that "Da Vinci Code" tourists and George Bush are indicative of what's wrong in the country culturally and politically. Later, and after asked by Jack, Marion admits that she gave Manu a "blow job," but then says it's no big deal. Jack is taken aback and asks how a "blow job" can be no big deal, with her replying that in relation to the Bush Administration, the war in Iraq and more, it's not. Referring to President Clinton, Jack says it was a "blow job" that brought down America's last good chance at democracy.
  • A cab driver states he had two wives and beat both of them (but we don't know if he's joking or not).
  • There's a flashback to young Rose asking if young Marion is "a retard."
  • Marion's father comments on her having a "fat ass," with her saying she stopped smoking 18 months ago and thus has gained weight.
  • The phrase "retards" is used (by someone else) in relation to Rose working with kids that have psychological problems.
  • We learn that Marion has previously shown her parents a photo of Jack, fully nude, with just balloons tied to his flaccid penis (the nudity is only briefly seen). The comment "nice weenie with balloons" is made during this.
  • A cab driver is disgusted by the thought of homosexuals and makes his stance known to Marion and Jack.
  • When Marion says that Jack is "very special," he asks if that's "in a retarded way."
  • A cab driver asks if she and Jack have kids. When she says no, the cabbie suggestively says that if Jack can't do it (impregnate her), he will.
  • Marion lies to Manu about Jack being a past murderer (all to keep Manu from wanting to stay with them when he visits New York).
  • Marion gets into an angry confrontation with a racist taxi driver, ending with her telling the man, "I heard your wife's f*cking an Arab," while he yells back to her, "Go get f*cked by your Yank."
  • Jack and Marion develop bad attitudes toward each other as the story unfolds, including him being jealous of her, and her lying to him about her past sexual behavior.
  • Marion's father scratches various cars (partially parked on the sidewalk) with his keys as he walks along them.
  • Jack snoops through Marion's text messages on her phone.
  • Marion sarcastically and angrily confronts an ex-boyfriend, saying he's "grown some balls" and comments on the fact that he "screwed" 12-year-olds (with variations of the term "screw" used several times).
  • While we don't see the actual event, an animal rights activist sets a fire in a fast food restaurant.
  • We see a miscellaneous man who's stolen a woman's purse. The victim mistakenly claims that Jack is the culprit, calling him an Arab (since he has dark hair and a beard). As a result, some police officers grab Jack and push him against a wall while cuffing him (but let him go moments later).
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • A miscellaneous man intensely stares at and follows Marion and Jack around a subway (part creepy, part funny).
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Marion wears a t-shirt with the image of a handgun on it.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "What the f*ck is that?" "What the f*ck?" (mouthed), "A f*cking psychopath," "I heard your wife's f*cking an Arab," "Go get f*cked by your Yank," "F*cking sh*t," "For f*ck's sake," "F*ck around," "You're sh*tting me," "We'll sh*t in the corner of the room," "Eat-sh*t-sleep" (the unofficial name for a cat), "Cut the bullsh*t," "Don't touch my sh*t," "Sh*tting," "I don't give a sh*t," "We've got two willies," "Landing strip" and "Hitler's mustache" (for shaved female pubic hair), "Fascist vagina," "Whores," "I'm not a human dildo," "You make me hard as wood" (written), "The mom's a slut too," "I'm your salami for life," "I'm a whore," "It's not your c*ck that's too big...it's your ego," "Slut," "You're a freaking psycho," "A true pain in the butt," "Retard(s)," "Bastard," "What a pain in the butt," "Fat ass," "Shut up," "What a bunch of idiots," "That sucks," "I was one of the bitches," "You've grown some balls," "Chick," "You're still this pissed" and "I'm a fairy" (meant literally and not homosexually).
  • Jack has many tattoos on various parts of his body.
  • We learn that Marion has previously shown her parents a photo of Jack, fully nude, with just balloons tied to his flaccid penis (the nudity is only briefly seen). The comment "nice weenie with balloons" is made during this.
  • A miscellaneous man intensely stares at and follows Marion and Jack around a subway (part creepy, part funny).
  • Marion's father scratches various cars (partially parked on the sidewalk) with his keys as he walks along them.
  • While we don't see the actual event, an animal rights activist sets a fire in a fast food restaurant.
  • We see some miscellaneous graffiti.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • None.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • None that we heard, but a song has lyrics in French, so we couldn't understand them.
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 21 "f" words (1 mouthed silently, 2 used sexually as are variations of "screw" and "do it"), 21 "s" words, 8 slang terms using male genitals ("c*cks," "d*ck," "salami," "weenie" and "willies"), 4 using female ones ("p*ssy" -- 1 written -- and "c*nt"), 12 asses (5 used with "hole"), 2 hells, 8 uses of "Oh my God," 4 of "Oh God" and 1 use each of "G-damn" and "God").
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • Marion comments in voice-over about a photo she took long ago of two snails, adding their statement, "We've got two willies."
  • We see Marion in just a towel. Jack then tries kissing her on the bed, but she's all chatty. Eventually, however, she's ready, telling Jack that before they procreate, for him to get some condoms. He does, but then questions when she bought them (when he wasn't there). He asks if she was planning on cheating on him in January, with her replying that she was planning to have sex with him then, but he got sick and didn't travel to see her. We then see the motion of them fumbling around in bed under the covers, with them having problems with the condom, including the sound of it snapping onto his skin. He then asks if condoms are smaller in Italy and there's a comment about kid-sized condoms, but he then climbs on top of her. When he takes off her glasses, she complains, saying she could be having sex with Gregory Peck for all she knows, and then adds, "So much for foreplay." When her mom lets herself into their place, that ends the sexual encounter.
  • Marion shows a little cleavage.
  • Marion's father says he had "them" (his testicles) chopped off (presumably referring to having a vasectomy), just like the cat, and that's why he got fat after that. Later, he asks Jack if he had his chopped off as well.
  • Marion's father quizzes Jack on a variety of subjects, including sex, adding, "Sex is good."
  • We learn that Marion has previously shown her parents a photo of Jack, fully nude, with just balloons tied to his flaccid penis (the nudity is only briefly seen). The comment "nice weenie with balloons" is made during this.
  • Marion tells Jack she thought he liked her snort-laugh, with him saying he had to in the past since he wanted "to get in your pants." He then adds that now that he has done that, he doesn't need to like the snorting.
  • After asked by Jack, Marion admits that she gave Manu a "blow job," but then says it's no big deal. Jack is taken aback and asks how a "blow job" can be no big deal, with her replying that in relation to the Bush Administration, the war in Iraq and more, it's not. Referring to President Clinton, Jack says it was a "blow job" that brought down America's last good chance at democracy.
  • In a montage, we briefly see a photo of Marion's clothed chest.
  • In Marion's Bible, Jack finds a photo of another man in the same fully nude with balloons tied to the penis photo as before (we briefly see it and its full frontal nudity). Jack is upset since it's the same pose, and comments on "c*cks" and "d*ck."
  • A cab driver asks if she and Jack have kids. When she says no, the cabbie suggestively says that if Jack can't do it (impregnate her), he will.
  • Jack is surprised by all sorts of sexually related work in Jeannot's art gallery. One political-looking cartoon type sketch graphically represents anal sex (with a penis in another person's rear end), another shows another sexual encounter (with an erect penis into another person), there's an abstract one showing a hermaphrodite giving birth, and a physical piece of art that features a feather that tickles a patch of fur (presumably meant to show female gratification). Sexually related talk about those works and sex in general also occurs.
  • At a party, a male stranger talks to Jack about "p*ssy," that he doesn't like shaved pubic hair (that he calls "Hitler's mustache" and Jack refers to as a "landing strip"), and that "it always makes my c*ck back away." He then adds that Americans aren't afraid of entering hostile territory (a political and sexual comment). Jack later comments about this man and the "fascist vagina."
  • Later, at the same party, Manu tells Jack he gave Marion her first orgasm through intercourse. Taken aback, Jack thanks him for paving the way "for the rest of us." Jack later questions Marion about this, with her saying she vaguely remembers that, with Jack asking what she means by vaguely, adding, "Just the tip?" (of Manu's penis). Jack confirms he knows she wasn't a virgin when they met, sarcastically adding "Far from it."
  • Rose comments on returning to one of her young subjects in the past, finding her chair wet from his urine, and wanting to cut off his penis.
  • Marion talks with a male artist about some "old pervs" who wanted her to "blow" them, and there are additional uses of that term, while the man jokingly says that in his field, a little lick is sometimes needed.
  • From a distance, Jack sees what looks like a man putting his hand on Marion's clothed chest, but the man is really just trying to help her find her contact lens.
  • Marion gets into an angry confrontation with a racist taxi driver, ending with her telling the man, "I heard your wife's f*cking an Arab," while he yells back to her, "Go get f*cked by your Yank."
  • We see movement under the covers of Marion trying to get on top of Jack, with her saying that's the way she likes to do it, and him complaining that he isn't a "human dildo" (we see her bare back, while he's shirtless). He then continues that it's unfair that the focus of sex is on the female orgasm. He then wants to "do it from behind," but she repeats she wants to be on top. He complains about them not having sex, with her saying it's because of him being sick, prompting him to comment on whether she'd want to get on top of him while he's on the toilet "sh*tting." They end up not having sex because she's no longer in the mood.
  • Marion states that she's soaking wet (from a plumbing leak), and Jack replies, "I bet you are" (meant sexually, after seeing her seemingly flirt with some firemen).
  • Marion's father jokes with a merchant that since Marion and Jack are with him, he won't pay her with his body today.
  • We see Jack shirtless.
  • Jack snoops through Marion's text messages on her phone. One reads, "You make me hard as wood" while another comments on licking her "p*ssy" and "I'm your salami for life."
  • Marion's mom admits she had a short affair with The Doors' lead singer Jim Morrison in the past, adding that's when sex with fun and everyone was with everyone, adding, "I was one of the bitches." Jack then comments to himself that her mom's a "slut" too.
  • Marion sarcastically and angrily confronts an ex-boyfriend, saying he's "grown some balls" and comments on the fact that he "screwed" 12-year-olds (with variations of the term "screw" used several times).
  • About the notion of the small world theory (that states no matter where you go in the world, you're likely to run into somebody who lives close to you), Jack sarcastically says it's true, but only applies to Marion's sex life.
  • Jack thinks Marion cheated on him, with her replying that she didn't cheat on him. He then replies that maybe having a little anal sex on the side is like fishing or playing Scrabble to her, all of which prompts her to say, "I'm a whore." But she then regains her assertiveness, telling him that it's not his "c*ck" that's too big for the Italian condoms (referring to an above scene) but rather his ego.
  • We see that Mathieu has made a life-size mannequin representation of Marion, complete with bare breasts and pubic hair. We then see a montage of that mannequin seated between the two of them, with some sexual tension growing between them. He then removes the mannequin and starts kissing her, but she ends up crying. Later, Rose questions her (Marion) wanting to "screw" Mathieu.
  • A male stranger in a restaurant takes Jack by the hand, and states that he's a fairy, but then adds he means that literally and not in the homosexual sense. During this, Jack tells the man that he's never admitted to anyone that he masturbates.
  • We see Jack shirtless, and then briefly see his male full frontal nudity when he pulls down and then pulls back up his shorts to make a point to Marion.
  • Marion jumps up on Jack and briefly wraps her legs around his hips as both dance, clothed.
  • SMOKING
  • Jack smokes more than 10 times, Rose and Manu each smoke once, and some miscellaneous characters smoke in several scenes.
  • Marion's father comments on her having a "fat ass," with her saying she stopped smoking 18 months ago and thus has gained weight.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • We hear that Jack's parents split up.
  • Marion's father comments on her having a "fat ass," with her saying she stopped smoking 18 months ago and thus has gained weight.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • The comment that Marion and Jack's relationship has had its ups and downs, but mostly in-betweens.
  • Hypochondriacs and neuroses.
  • Relationships and how former ones can affect current ones.
  • Marion being a professional photographer despite having an eye defect that blocks some of her vision.
  • The comment that everyone sees things differently.
  • The comment that a person taking photos is an observer and thus taken out of the moment that he or she is capturing.
  • Jealousy.
  • Jack saying that Marion has an impulse control problem.
  • The small world theory that states no matter where you go in the world, you're likely to run into somebody who lives close to you.
  • The comment about former lovers acting like they barely know or like each other after they break up.
  • VIOLENCE
  • Two men bicker over who's getting into a cab, with some brief pushing between them.
  • Marion's father scratches various cars (partially parked on the sidewalk) with his keys as he walks along them.
  • Marion sarcastically and angrily confronts an ex-boyfriend in a restaurant, making a scene, including her twice trying to attack him, having to be restrained both times.
  • While we don't see the actual event, an animal rights activist sets a fire in a fast food restaurant.
  • A woman, who's just had her purse stolen, mistakenly claims that Jack is the culprit, calling him an Arab (since he has dark hair and a beard). As a result, some police officers grab Jack and push him against a wall while cuffing him (but let him go moments later).
