QUICK TAKE:
Sci-fi: A mutant woman with specialized powers and skills battles a government leader and his minions who want her kind eradicated.
PLOT:
It's the late 21st century, and a military-based virus that was supposed to have created super-soldiers has instead infected common, everyday people. At first, the victims -- known as hemophages -- were shunned and made to wear identifying armbands. Later, they were shipped away to camps and then pretty much disappeared from sight. And now the government, led by Daxus (NICK CHINLUND), wants to eradicate the remaining ones, and his people have devised a weapon they believe will do the trick.

Little do they know, however, that the courier who's arrived to transport it is one of their targets. Once a wife and expectant mother who lost both her husband and pregnancy, Violet (MILLA JOVOVICH) is now a force to be reckoned with. Proficient at martial arts, able to partially neutralize gravity and possessing the ability to literally pull a bevy of weapons out of nowhere, Violet is Daxus' worst nightmare, and she hopes that whatever's in the case she now possesses might somehow lead to a cure.

But when she opens it up to take a look, she discovers a boy, known only as Six (CAMERON BRIGHT), rather than a weapon. With her survival and maternal instincts kicking in, Violet manages to get the boy out of the government complex and takes him to rogue scientist Garth (WILLIAM FICHTNER). Like Violet, he's one of the vampire-like Hemophages, but he has bad news for Violet. Not only does the boy not possess any sort of remedy for them, but also he's going to die within a number of hours.

With time running out, Violet does what she can for the boy and tries to prevent him from falling back into Daxus' hands, all while battling the leader's various minions as well as some of her own who have their own reason for wanting the boy.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're into sci-fi action flicks or are fans of someone in the cast, they might.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13

  • CAMERON BRIGHT plays the cloned boy who initially seems mute and dazed, but eventually converses with Violet.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this sci-fi action flick. Profanity consists of at least 2 "s" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are used. A woman is seen fully nude from behind as she walks away from the camera (in a nonsexual and dimly lit scene) while she's otherwise seen in skintight and midriff-revealing outfits (some of which have pants cut quite low). Other behavior may be enticing to imitate, including all of the stunts, action and more.

Violence consists of all sorts of fighting where many people are knocked about and/or killed or wounded by gunfire and sword impact. While there are some bloody results, it isn't as gory as it could have been. Some of those scenes, moments of peril and other material might be unsettling or suspenseful to the youngest of kids and/or those with low tolerance levels for such mayhem (but little of it's filmed to be suspenseful in the standard sense of the word). Two main characters appear to die or be killed, but are alive at the end.

The villains all have bad attitudes, while various thematic elements (cloning, etc.) are present, as is some brief tense family material (a woman remembering seeing others kill her husband and talk of losing her unborn child).

Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, camera movement and a great deal of quickly paced edits are present and may induce that reaction.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • None.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • We see what looks like blood in large transparent containers in some sort of lab.
  • A man gets some infected blood on his hand, thus prompting another to shoot him twice, killing him (we don't see the impact).
  • In a flashback, Violet sees her husband shot dead by government agents (she has some of his blood on her hands).
  • We see an overhead view of a dead body on the floor, with what looks like some blood around it.
  • Being tested to see if she's a hemophage, Violet is strapped to a chair and has sharp probes jabbed up into her wrists (we don't see the impact but do see a little blood collected for testing) and smaller, needle-like ones inserted into the whites of her eyes (we see that in close-up, but there's no blood).
  • We see Violet vomit (from being sick).
  • Daxus spits at Violet, but she blocks it with her palm (we see it there).
  • Violet is slightly wounded in a sword fight with others and we see some blood on her white gloves. Some of that then drips out and causes her white outfit to turn red.
  • We see a little blood on Violet's hand as well as a tiny bit on the wall behind (some of it runs down one section). As she then walks along a walkway, we see drops of blood from her landing on it.
  • Violet gets some of her blood on Daxus and the gun he's holding.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Daxus and his minions have extreme cases of bad attitudes for their efforts to kill Violet, Six and others, as well as Daxus' later revealed plan to blackmail humans to pay him to insure their safety from a bad virus.
  • Some of Violet's own kind turn on her and one or more appear to be in cahoots with Daxus.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence" and/or "Blood/Gore" may be unsettling or suspenseful to very young viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material, but probably to few others.
  • Violet spots Six standing up on a railing at the edge of high-rise roof (we see a view from above him looking down). She then slowly walks over, calmly talks to him and then snatches him off the railing.
  • Some viewers may worry when they hear that Six is dying and only has a few hours to live.
  • Violet decides to abandon Six, but then has second thoughts as we see government troops looking for him. We then hear gunfire and Violet rushes up, but it turns out they shot and presumably killed the wrong boy.
  • Six looks sicker and then appears to die on the ground beside Violet. He's later seen looking quite frosty (as if having been in cold storage), but by the end (and thru a miraculous bit of script writing) he's alive and okay.
  • Violet appears to be suicidal and loads one bullet into her gun as she lies down with it on her chest, but a phone call changes her mind.
  • We see a rotary morgue saw being moved close to Six's head (he looks frosty and is presumably dead), but an alarm distracts the operator and it's never used.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Handguns/Machine guns/Swords/Futuristic Weapons: Carried and/or used to threaten, wound or kill others and/or cause property damage. See "Violence" for details.
  • Various cartoon versions of the above are seen in the comic book style opening credits.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "Oh sh*t," "You're full of sh*t," "You pr*ck," "Total bullshido" (written), "Poor bastard," "What the hell is going on?" "You dumb son of a bitch," "Park it, right there" (sit down), "I screwed up," "Sure as hell," "The kid's toast" (doomed to die), "Pissed off," "Are you /insane/mental?" and "What the hell difference does it make?"
  • All of the stunts, fighting and more may be enticing for some kids to imitate.
  • Violet spots Six standing up on a railing at the edge of high-rise roof (we see a view from above him looking down). She then slowly walks over, calmly talks to him and then snatches him off the railing.
  • Daxus spits at Violet, but she blocks it with her palm (we see it there).
  • Violet grasps a hot gun barrel in an attempt to cauterize her hand wound.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • Some action-oriented, sci-fi style music plays during some of the action scenes, but it isn't suspenseful, scary or overly dramatic.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • None.
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 2 "s" words, 1 slang term using male genitals ("pr*ck"), 6 hells, 3 damns, 1 S.O.B., 2 uses each of "For God's sakes" and "My God" and 1 use of "Oh my God."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • Throughout most of the film, Violet wears ultra-tight clothing that hugs her body but also shows a great deal of her bare midriff (her pants are cut quite low, but nothing explicit is seen).
  • During the open credits (that look like comic book drawings) there's an image of a woman that appears to show her bare butt, but the artwork isn't clear enough to be positive about what we're seeing.
  • Told to strip and walk through a long scanner tube, we then see a full rear nude view of Violet as she walks away from the camera (several views, in somewhat dimly lit environs, but you can see her bare butt).
  • SMOKING
  • None.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • In a flashback, Violet sees her husband shot dead by government agents (she has some of his blood on her hands), while we also hear that she lost her unborn child.
  • Daxus claims that Six is his son, but we later learn that's not the case (instead, the boy is one in a line of clones).
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Genetic engineering and tampering with nature.
  • Cloning.
  • Contagious diseases (many here wear masks and might make some think of the bird flu, etc.).
  • Repressive governments and their desire to corral and dehumanize those who are different.
  • Violet appears to be suicidal and loads one bullet into her gun as she lies down with it on her chest, but a phone call changes her mind.
  • VIOLENCE
  • Unless otherwise noted, the following does not have bloody results.
  • Large metallic balls are dropped from a craft and crash through high-rise windows causing various sorts of property damage. Inside, they morph into ninja type assassins who attack various lab workers, killing them. Government officials then appear and shoot them dead with machine guns.
  • A man gets some infected blood on his hand, thus prompting another to shoot him twice, killing him (we don't see the impact).
  • In a flashback, Violet sees her husband shot dead by government agents (she has some of his blood on her hands).
  • When her cover is blown, Violet grabs and breaks one man's arm before fighting many others. She kicks and hits them, all while flipping about and avoiding machine gun fire aimed at her. Their bodies then lie all around her, but we don't know if they're dead or just unconscious.
  • Violet shoots more men with machine guns, killing them, and then kills others with her sword.
  • Police shoot at Violet with machine guns (from a car and helicopter) as she tries to elude them on a motorcycle (which includes her defying gravity and riding the bike up the side of a high-rise). Once there, she races toward the open chopper and shoots those inside while passing through (the chopper then explodes behind her).
  • A man shoots Six (we don't see the impact), but that turns out to have been a visual decoy of sorts and no one was harmed.
  • Many men surround and aim their guns at Violet. One fires and she avoids the bullet that flies by in slow motion and strikes another man in the head through his glasses. Everyone then opens fire and inadvertently end up shooting each other dead, all as Violet avoids the bullets.
  • Violet shoots through a glass wall to allow her and Six to escape.
  • Daxus' men riddle a car with machine gun fire.
  • We see an aerial view of Violet sliding her car into various men on the street, knocking them down.
  • Violet fires into a subway car so that she and Six can board it (no one is harmed).
  • We hear the sound of violence in the dark and then see that several men have been killed.
  • Daxus shoots three men dead as they attempt to kill him.
  • Violet decides to abandon Six, but then has second thoughts as we see government troops looking for him. We then hear gunfire and Violet rushes up, but it turns out they shot and presumably killed the wrong boy.
  • Six is suddenly abducted and yanked up and out of sight, with one man then opening fire on Violet.
  • Violet fights two of her own kind, with punches and kicks, ultimately ending up with both men unconscious or dead and her holding a handful of one's braided hair.
  • We see that Daxus has Six strung up above some sort of well. As he then loosens that rope and the boy falls a long distance, Violet fights and kills many with her sword as she makes her way toward the well (some may be decapitated -- as something flies off several of them -- but the view is so quick it was hard to tell, but there's no blood either way). She then grabs the rapidly moving rope and burns her hands while getting it to stop.
  • Daxus' men riddle Violet's car with machine gun fire and Daxus then shoots Violet, but she turns out to be a hologram broadcast from elsewhere.
  • Daxus kicks Violet to the ground and shoots her (we don't see the impact, but do see her pained reaction and it's implied that she's dead -- but she's later okay thanks to Garth saving her life -- not seen).
  • Violet strikes and presumably kills one guard.
  • We see brief playback footage of Violet attacking other men.
  • Violet uses her sword to fight and presumably kill many men (she's slightly wounded during that, and we see some blood).
  • Violet hits one and then shoots many men. She then kills more with her sword and then additional ones with her machine guns.
  • Violet and Daxus get into a sword battle and we see a slight bloody slice in his clothing. He then causes the dome they're in to go pitch black, thus giving him the upper hand since he can supposedly see in the dark. She then somehow causes her blade to catch on fire, with his then doing the same and they exchange a few swings (with her putting out a flaming cut on her leg) before he's completely engulfed in flames and then seems to split in half (in the dark, so it's hard to tell what we're seeing). Later, that entire dome is on fire (seen from the outside).
