QUICK TAKE:
Suspense/Thriller: The vacation plans of various tourists go awry when they learn they've been targeted as live organ donors for a deranged Brazilian doctor.
PLOT:
American siblings Alex (JOSH DUHAMEL) and Bea (OLIVIA WILDE) have traveled to Brazil for a vacation with Bea's best friend Amy (BEAU GARRET). The two teens are ready for some parentless partying, but Alex is in over-protective, older brother mode and appears uptight.

That's especially true when they and others -- including solitary Australian traveler Pru (MELISSA GEORGE) and Brit pals Finn (DESMOND ASKWEW) and Liam (MAX BROWN) -- barely scramble out of a crashed bus just before it tumbles down a steep embankment. Tired of waiting for another bus and unsure if they'd feel safe boarding one, they walk down to a beach bar where they end up partying with a bunch of locals, such as Kiko (AGLES STEIB) who tries out his broken English on Bea. The next morning, however, the travelers wake up to discover that they were drugged the night before and have since been robbed of everything but the clothes on their backs. With no where else to turn and facing a dangerous crowd after Liam wounds a kid who had some of their stolen possessions, the group follows Kiko's lead up through a thick jungle to his uncle's house where he states they'll be safe.

Along the way, he comes to like these tourists, and thus suddenly doesn't want to carry out his real mission. And that's depositing the foreigners to local doctor Zamora (MIGUEL LUNARDI) who wants to use them as live organ donors. From that point on, the various group members try to escape from him and his goons before it's too late.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Older teens might be interested, especially if they're fans of someone in the cast or are drawn by the advertisements showing scantly clad, young adults in a thriller type story.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For strong graphic violence and disturbing content, sexuality, nudity, drug use and language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • JOSH DUHAMEL plays an American tourist traveling in Brazil with his 17-year-old younger sister over whom he acts protectively. He's cautious to an extreme, but ends up partying with everyone else. He also uses strong profanity and must try to figure out how to elude Zamora and his thugs.
  • OLIVIA WILDE plays his teenage sister who just wants to party. She gets friendly with Kiko before things turn ugly regarding the overall group.
  • BEAU GARRET plays her wild, teenage friend who also wants to party and briefly and purposefully exposes her bare breasts to the others just to be provocative.
  • MELISSA GEORGE plays an Australian woman who's traveling around the world by herself and ends up in the company of the others following the bus accident.
  • DESMOND ASKWEW plays a Brit tourist who's there for the women, beer and beaches, but similarly finds himself in a completely unexpected situation. He has sex with a local woman, drinks, carries around what looks like a joint, and uses strong profanity.
  • MAX BROWN plays his friend and traveling companion who's there for the same and uses strong profanity.
  • AGLES STEIB plays a local guy who befriends and parties with the group, but is just there to lead them back to Zamora's place. Once he gets to know the tourists, he has second thoughts and then tries to help them elude the madman.
  • MIGUEL LUNARDI plays the deranged doctor who gets revenge on foreign tourists by kidnapping and then using them as live organ donors for the locals.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this horror thriller that's been rated R. Profanity consists of at least 39 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Some sexually related dialogue is present, as is nudity (bare breasts, butts in thongs, and the wearing of other skimpy swimwear and other attire), while a sexual encounter is briefly seen and another is suggested.

Violence includes people being murdered in various ways (gunfire, machete, falling, surgical removal of body organs, etc.), while non-lethal fighting is also present. Much of that has extremely bloody and/or gory results (especially the surgery scene shown in graphic detail) and those scenes and various moments of potential peril could be rather unsettling and/or suspenseful to viewers.

The villains and their accomplices all have bad attitudes, various characters drink (a lot in one scene), and there are brief moments depicting drug use (pot, cocaine and something using a brown paper bag). Brief smoking occurs, while some potentially dangerous, imitative behavior is also present.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there's some camera movement from time to time in the film.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • We see two miscellaneous women carrying tropical style drinks.
  • All in the group but Alex drink in a beachside bar, although he later drinks late into the night with them and strangers as everyone parties (drinking shots and/or beer).
  • A woman inhales something from a brown paper bag that leaves her acting high.
  • Finn has what looks like an unlit joint over his ear and is later seen carrying the same in his hand.
  • We see various point of view shots from the drugged group members before they pass out (they were unknowingly drugged).
  • Some tribesmen smoke what looks like crack cocaine or something similar.
  • During a long journey to a jungle cabin, one of the Brits is heard saying that there better be a big bag of weed at their destination.
  • Finn says he came to Brazil for the girls, beaches, and beer.
  • One of the women finds various pharmaceuticals in the jungle cabin (codeine, etc.) and asks, "What the hell is this place, a youth hostel for drug addicts?"
  • Finn finds a bottle of scotch in the jungle cabin and we later see various people drinking some with their meal.
  • Talking about a bad journey to Cambodia, Liam says that at least they had "that hash."
  • Zamora has a drink.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • During the opening credits, we see flash images of bloody scenes (that we later learn are surgery related) that include a young woman pleading for Zamora (who we see in the reflection of her eye) not to do what he's doing.
  • A bus driver picks his nose and later spits out the window.
  • A tribesman hacks off another man's fingers with a machete and then repeatedly strikes him with it (we don't see the impact) while another chases a woman through the jungle. She ends up falling off a cliff and bangs her head on a rocky precipice on the way down (we see blood come out -- from a distance).
  • We hear the sound of Alex urinating.
  • We see some jungle birds picking at and eating raw meat (with the implication being that it's human).
  • Upset that his minions killed two donor victims, Zamora stabs one in the eye with a wooden food skewer, driving it deeper into the man's head until it kills him (with very bloody/gory results).
  • Kiko dives from a tall cliff into the water below, but hits his head on something beneath the surface. He floats to the top with a very bloody head wound, and the others grab, remove him from the water, and take him to the jungle cabin. There, we see a close-up view of the gaping scalp wound, including when Finn uses a regular stapler to close the wound (for lack of anything else to do the job).
  • We see a needle going into a woman's skin, some antiseptic being wiped across her abdomen, and then Zamora making various scalpel incisions into her skin, all as she's sedated but still awake. This and other views of this surgery are very bloody and graphic, including that of organs being removed from the body and then an overhead view of the victim with a gaping opening in her abdomen. We also see blood and/or other related fluids moving through tubes, etc.
  • As an armed thug stands above them on a deck, Kiko slips a large hook between the boards and then yanks it down into the thug's foot, impaling him there (with bloody results).
  • A man is shot in the hand (with bloody results).
  • We see a little blood in the water as a woman stabs a thug repeatedly with an arrow.
  • Alex attacks a villain with a rock, repeatedly bashing his head with it (with very bloody results), but stops when a thug aims his rifle at them.
  • A thug shoots his boss in the head, killing him (with very bloody results).
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Zamora, his associates, and his thugs all have bad attitudes for drugging, robbing and abducting foreigners and then using them as live organ donors.
  • A bus driver careens down a winding road, causing some concern for Alex, but few others. He tailgates a couple on a motorbike and then nearly hits some pedestrians, resulting in the bus crashing.
  • Zamora is demeaning to one of his native thugs, calling him an Indian and saying he owns him.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence," "Blood/Gore" and "Jump Scenes" may be unsettling or suspenseful, especially to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material.
  • A bus passes by a dog on the street that's either sound asleep or dead (the bus misses it, but it doesn't move as the passing wind blows its ears around).
  • A bus driver careens down a winding road, causing some concern for Alex, but few others. He tailgates a couple on a motorbike and then nearly hits some pedestrians. He swerves out of the way, but that results in the bus coming to a stop and precariously leaning on the edge of a cliff. Everyone scrambles to get out, and does so just in time as the bus shifts and then ends up tumbling down the steep embankment.
  • When one tourist tries to take a photo of a smiling child, a local adult male becomes incensed, confronts her and slaps her camera away (we hear they're concerned about local children ending up missing due to foreigners abducting them).
  • We see some tribesmen carrying a gagged foreign couple tied to horizontal poles (presumably to be taken to Zamora). As the tribesmen stop to do some drugs, the couple tries to escape, but the tribesmen see this. One hacks off the man's fingers with a machete and then repeatedly strikes him with it (we don't see the impact) while another chases the woman through the jungle. She ends up falling off a cliff and bangs her head on a rocky precipice on the way down (we see blood come out -- from a distance) until she hits the ground hard.
  • As Liam pursues some kids possessing their previously stolen goods, one throws something that hits him. Liam then continues to chase them, including throwing a large rock that smacks one kid on the back of the head, leading to a tense moment as villagers surround him and the rest of his group (during which one person slaps another).
  • Upset that his minions killed two donor victims, Zamora stabs one in the eye with a wooden food skewer, driving it deeper into the man's head until it kills him (with very bloody/gory results).
  • Some of the group members become concerned as Kiko leads them from one underwater cave to the next (meaning long swims underwater with stops at places that sometimes only have a little bit of headspace to breathe).
  • The group cautiously explores the jungle cabin at night.
  • Alex finds many tourist passports in the remote jungle cabin, indicating something is amiss.
  • The group is roused from sleep by the sound of barking dogs and approaching choppers.
During this, a bound and gagged man watches in horror from an adjacent table.
  • We see that Zamora's thugs have the group bound and gagged in cages outside at night in the rain. They then manage to free themselves and then attack one guard when he enters. They hit and repeatedly stab him, but the view is so dark and jumpy it's hard to tell what we're seeing (beyond the man apparently being stabbed to death).
  • A thug with a crossbow chases after two women who've escaped into the jungle at night.
  • A woman tries to hide from an armed thug in the jungle at night as large ants crawl over her hand.
  • Thinking Alex is one of the thugs, Bea tries to hide in a rocky outcrop and then smashes a large rock down onto his foot.
  • Kiko and some group members try to elude Zamora and his thugs by entering a body of water and then swimming down and into the various underwater caves.
  • Zamora and a thug open fire on Kiko and some group members who are swimming in an underwater cave. One is hit in the hand (with bloody results), while another is struck and killed (the rest swim away).
  • Various group members try to elude a thug who's swimming after them from one underwater cave to another (where there's only limited breathing areas between them, while some must suck down air bubbles trapped on the flooded cave ceilings). The thug finally catches one girl and struggles with her, but she bites his hand and then repeatedly stabs him with a crossbow arrow, killing him (we see his body sink in the water).
  • Alex attacks a villain with a rock, repeatedly bashing his head with it (with very bloody results), but stops when a thug aims his rifle at them.
  • A thug shoots his boss in the head, killing him (with very bloody results).
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Handguns/Rifles/Automatic weapons/Machete/Knives or something similar/Crossbow & arrow: Carried and/or used to threaten, wound, or kill others. See "Violence" for details.
  • During the opening credits, we see a photo of a man with a rifle.

  • A bus driver picks his nose and later spits out the window.
  • Finn has a tattoo on his arm, while a thug has a tattoo.
  • Kiko jumps off a tall cliff into a body of water below, eventually getting a few to copy that action. They also swim to an underwater cave and then go from one to another.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • A sudden sound in a scene transition might startle some viewers.
  • Some group members suddenly encounter one of their own in an underwater cave.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • An extreme amount of ominous and suspenseful music plays in the film.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • Some songs had foreign lyrics that we couldn't understand, thus meaning there's the possibility of them containing potentially objectionable material.
  • Pru explains some foreign song lyrics playing at a party as being about various nasty things the male singer wants to do in the backseat of a car, including what sounded like "up the ass."
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 39 "f" words, 11 "s" words, 1 slang term each using male and female genitals ("pr*ck" and "c*nt"), 2 asses, 1 damn, 1 hell, 1 S.O.B., 4 uses each of "God" and "Oh God," 3 each of "Christ," "Jesus Christ" and "Oh my God," 2 of "Jesus" and 1 each of "G-damn" and "My God."

  • We briefly see a woman breastfeeding her child (we see the top of her breast).
  • We see a shirtless guy on a motorbike.
  • A woman goes to get something down from inside a bus, meaning her bikini-covered chest ends up right in a male tourist's face.
  • Bea and Amy laugh about a crude drawing they see on a bus showing a male figure with an erect penis and something coming out of the end of that. When one questions what the caption reads, the other jokes, "Welcome to Brazil. Now bend over."
  • One of the women wears a revealing and very low-cut outfit that shows she's not wearing a bra.
  • We see miscellaneous young women lying face down in thong bikinis (thus we see most of their bare butts).
  • The group strips down to go swimming, with one girl saying she forgot her bikini top and asking the others if they mind if she goes topless. She doesn't, but as Amy changes into her small bikini, she purposefully allows herself to be topless for a few moments. We then see the guys shirtless, while two of the girls are in very skimpy bikinis (one of the thong variety).
  • We see various shirtless guys and young women in small bikinis (that show ample cleavage and some partial bare butts) as they play soccer.
  • The camera pans up a woman's body in her thong bottom and top.
  • The camera focuses on male and female bodies as they dance (we see several views of that, including young women in skimpy swimwear).

  • Pru explains some foreign song lyrics playing at a party as being about various nasty things the male singer wants to do in the backseat of a car, including what sounded like "up the ass."
  • We see a local woman pulling up her bikini bottom (she's topless - we see her bare breasts) after apparently having sex with Finn (she walks off with a filled, used condom) and then takes some money from his wallet, indicating she's a hooker (he's in bed in his boxers or other shorts).
  • After being robbed, Amy is still in her thong bottom, while we can see the shape of Pru's nipples beneath her top.
  • As the group swims from one underwater cave to the next, we see various close-up views of the women in their bikinis and the guys being shirtless.

  • Zamora does a bit of preaching about foreigners always taking from Brazil (including using their bodies for sex).
  • We see a guard having sex with a woman who's seated on the edge of a table (he's standing). There's movement and brief sounds, but they stop when Zamora enters the room (another guard was already there, but not really paying attention).
  • SMOKING
  • Liam smokes once, as does a miscellaneous person.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • Alex and Bea (siblings) worry about the other during their ordeal.

  • Zamora does a bit of preaching about foreigners always taking from Brazil (including using their bodies for sex) and that now he's taking back from them with his live organ donor efforts.
  • VIOLENCE
  • We see some tribesmen carrying a gagged foreign couple tied to horizontal poles (presumably to be taken to Zamora). As the tribesmen stop to do some drugs, the couple tries to escape, but the tribesmen see this. One hacks off the man's fingers with a machete and then repeatedly strikes him with it (we don't see the impact) while another chases the woman through the jungle. There, we see a close-up view of the gaping scalp wound, including when Finn uses a regular stapler to close the wound (for lack of anything else to do the job).
  • A thug pushes Finn to the floor. That's followed by some struggling, with one thug seemingly striking a person with a machete (we don't see the impact).
  • We see a needle going into a woman's skin, some antiseptic being wiped across her abdomen, and then Zamora making various scalpel incisions into her skin, all as she's sedated but still awake.
