PLOT: Weddings have never been high on 29-year-old architect Michael's (ZACH BRAFF) list of favorite things as their apparent finality makes him uneasy. Thus, when he attends one for a good friend, it gets him thinking about his relationship with his pregnant girlfriend Jenna (JACINDA BARRETT). While her parents -- Anna (BLYTHE DANNER) and Stephen (TOM WILKINSON) have been married for 30 years, he can't name many other happy couples, including that of his coworker and friend Chris (CASEY AFFLECK) who feels trapped both by his marriage to Lisa (LAUREN LEE SMITH) and his status of being a new father. Then there's Izzy (MICHAEL WESTON) who's obsessed with and depressed about his ex-girlfriend, while the more laidback Kenny (ERIC CHRISTIAN OLSEN) is all too happy to have a casual sexual relationship with Danielle (CINDY SAMPSON) who he meets at the wedding, but gets spooked when she later wants him to meet her parents. Thus, when pretty and outgoing college student Kim (RACHEL BILSON) chats him up at the wedding, Michael sees her as a possible last chance of being spontaneous and unpredictable. As Michael and his friends contemplate turning 30, and they as well as Jenna's parents deal with various issues in their relationships, Michael must figure out his, including whether to remain faithful to Jenna or have one last fling with Kim. WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT? Older teens may be, as might fans of anyone in the cast. WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R For sexuality, nudity and language. CAST AS ROLE MODELS: ZACH BRAFF plays a Wisconsin based architect who's worried that his life will no longer hold any surprises now that he's about to be a dad with Jenna, his girlfriend he's reluctant to marry. Going through a personal crisis at the age of 29, he ends up attracted to Kim, eventually having an affair with her. He uses strong profanity and drinks. JACINDA BARRETT plays his pregnant girlfriend of three years who thinks she has men figured out, but finds out the hard way that she doesn't. She uses strong profanity toward Michael while furious at him for cheating on her. CASEY AFFLECK plays Michael's married friend and new father who's realized he and his wife no longer are compatible and wants to break up with her. He uses strong profanity, drinks, and briefly smokes pot. RACHEL BILSON plays a college student who comes on to and eventually seduces Michael, with whom she has sex. MICHAEL WESTON plays another of Michael's friends who's still fixated on his ex-girlfriend who wants nothing to do with him. He uses strong profanity, and punches a guy she's with. BLYTHE DANNER plays Jenna's mother who's not happy in her 30-year marriage, informs her husband that she had an affair several years ago (and wants to rekindle it, but her former lover is now married), and moves out to try to be on her own. She briefly uses strong profanity. TOM WILKINSON plays her psychoanalyst husband who must not only contend with that, but also their unmarried daughter being pregnant and then having her boyfriend cheat on her. He briefly uses strong profanity. ERIC CHRISTIAN OLSEN plays Michael's more carefree friend who's blissful in his active sex life with a woman until she wants to have him meet her parents. He briefly smokes pot. LAUREN LEE SMITH plays Chris' harried wife who's tired of him not being around as well as emotionally distant. She uses strong profanity when their relationship falters. CINDY SAMPSON plays a young woman Kenny meets at the wedding and with whom he repeatedly has sex. OUR WORD TO PARENTS: The following is a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated dramedy. Profanity consists of at least 57 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue (some of it explicit) is present, as are various rather graphic sexual encounters (with movement, partial nudity -- breasts and butts -- and sounds), some clothed fooling around, and the sight of two fully nude strippers at a bachelor party doing a lesbian act for the guys. We also hear that an unmarried couple is going to have a child, while the man of that pairing ends up cheating on the woman. Other bad attitudes are present (including another affair in the past), and tense family material includes two married couples on the verge of breaking up. It's possible some of that verbal fighting could be unsettling to some sensitive viewers, while some characters strike others in a few scenes. Characters drink, briefly smoke, and several scenes depict marijuana use (passing a joint, and smoking from bongs). ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE Michael, Jenna, and her parents have wine with dinner. Anna then has Stephen open a bottle of champagne when they hear that Jenna is pregnant. Kenny, Chris, and another guy share a joint while watching two strippers perform for them. There's a champagne toast at a wedding, followed by others drinking, including Michael who orders a beer (as does Kim) after she asks what he's doing and he replies he's trying to figure out how drunk he's going to get. Chris and Izzy have beer, as does Danielle. Kenny and Chris drink shots in a bar. About a trailer he's trying to sell to Kenny and the others, a man says he smoked a lot of "weed" in that. Jenna has wine (despite being pregnant -- she earlier had a taste of champagne as a toast to her pregnancy). People drink and smoke from bongs at a college party. Izzy has a beer. BLOOD/GORE While talking about relationships and sitting together, Jenna asks Michael what he's been holding in (emotionally) and he lets out a fart, saying he's been holding it in all day. She laughs in a disgusted fashion and gets up. DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE Izzy won't let his ex-girlfriend move on and is obsessed with getting back with her when she obviously doesn't want that to happen. Izzy finds out where his ex-girlfriend is spending the night, storms in, punches her latest lover in the gut, and then punches him in the jaw upon leaving. Anna goes to see her former lover (she cheated on Stephen 3 years ago), but is disappointed when she learns he's married and a new father (she passionately kisses him once before saying goodbye). Kenny doesn't mind having lots of sex with Danielle, but he bails when she wants him to meet her parents. Michael cheats on Jenna (his pregnant girlfriend who's done him no wrong), first by kissing Kim on a date, and then later by sleeping with her as well. He also lies to Jenna about what happened (wanting to use a reluctant Chris as his fake alibis), although he eventually comes clean about that. Jenna has wine (despite being pregnant -- she earlier had a taste of champagne as a toast to her pregnancy). Some viewers might not like it when Jenna (most likely bluffing) says that maybe she won't keep the baby (meaning an abortion) after learning Michael has cheated on her. FRIGHTENING SCENES Some of the verbal fighting might be unsettling for some viewers. While mad at him about cheating, Kim grabs a large kitchen knife and holds it in his direction. SEX/NUDITY Michael stares at a Victoria's Secret ad on the side of a bus (looking past Jenna at it), but we only see the model's face. Jenna's parents are surprised but happy when she announces she's pregnant, with Stephen asking how this happened and Michael sheepishly starting to answer ("Well..." meaning sex). A person makes a comment about a woman who they say is a slut and trapped some guy. Michael and Jenna playfully talk about her getting fat now that she's pregnant. Michael says he's fine with that as long "as I can find these" (as he gropes her clothed breasts from behind her. He then comments on her nice "ass" and playfully rolls around with her on the bed (with his hands on her butt), eventually ending up on top of her between her legs (both are clothed). He then has to leave, saying, "We'll talk later" to each clothed breast while kissing them. We see Michael and his friends staring in amazement at two strippers they hired for a bachelor party. The women are nude on a hammock inside the house, with one lying on top of the other and kissing her (we see their bare breasts and can tell they're completely nude). Izzy can't handle seeing this and has to leave, with Kenny stating (apparently joking) that Izzy's mom was a lesbian. Chris' wife shows some cleavage. Kim shows a little cleavage as she tells Michael to feel her heart (as she takes his hand and places it on her bare chest in her low-cut top). Danielle tells Kenny that she shouldn't be bullied (in general) into having a child just because she has a vagina. We see Danielle and Kenny passionately making out outside at a wedding. About his ex-girlfriend, Izzy says it's been "six weeks and she's already screwing somebody else." We briefly see a male infant's bare butt. Izzy finds out where his ex-girlfriend is spending the night, storms in, and finds her in a robe in the bedroom and her latest lover in small briefs (both now standing). We see thrusting movement under the covers, hear related sounds, and then see Kenny on top of Danielle out from under the covers (between her legs) as the doorbell interrupts them. It's Izzy, and Kenny walks to the door fully nude (we see his full rear nudity) to let him in. Kenny then returns to the bedroom and we later see him having rear entry intercourse with her, lying flat on top of her as she lies flat (we see their bare butts and movement and hear related sounds). Later, they both come out of the bedroom (he in just low-riding pants, she in just one of his dress shirts) one of the guys there asks, "What's up?" and Kenny responds, "Nothing at this moment" (an erection double entendre). Izzy then jealously complains that Kenny is "screwing" a different girl every night, with Kenny saying it isn't every night. He then heads off for the bedroom, stating that he's "going to put my blue balls to bed." As Jenna and Michael talk about relationships (she sitting up, he lying down with his legs by her), her hand accidentally lands on his clothed crotch and he says that's his "nut." Michael and Jenna passionately kiss. We see Kenny and Danielle lying back on the floor, presumably after having had sex sitting upright. Their legs are intertwined and thus block views of their crotches, but we see her bare breasts and both are sweaty and out of breath after their encounter. We then see the sides of their bare butts as they move about. Anna goes to see her former lover (she cheated on Stephen 3 years ago), but is disappointed when she learns he's married and a new father (she passionately kisses him once before saying goodbye). She then confronts Stephen during his psychiatric session with a client and blurts out, "I just wanted to let you know I f*cked another man." He then follows her out and takes her into a closet to talk to her, with her saying if he had dragged her into a closet in the past, things might have been different. Michael calls Kim and she says she's been thinking about him. He asks what kind of thoughts and she suggestively says he knows. She then wonders if he can see what she's wearing, and it seems like this will lead to a phone sex encounter, but it doesn't. Overhearing Michael's side of the conversation, Chris starts drilling him with conversations at the end of the call, eventually stating, "You're f*cking around on her" (Jenna) and that term is used again as Michael says he isn't. After Michael picks up Kim in the pouring rain, she suggestively states that her top is clingy and that you can see everything. He tries to act as if he doesn't notice, but she wants him to and so he does. A song had a lyric about something along the lines of "grab some naughty" and something about "your body." The camera focuses in close-up on Kim's clothed body as she dances with Michael at a party. Michael and Kim passionately kiss, with her saying they should go back to her room where she can "spend the whole night making love to you." They kiss some more, but he stops, saying he can't do this, although "I really want to have sex with you." She says she can tell (as they stand close to each other, clothed), and he wonders how, with her replying about the "subtle signs" (a possible erection reference). When he's still reluctant, she tells him she could be his last crack at happiness and they do a bit more passionate kissing, but he then leaves. When learning he was with Kim, Jenna asks if he had sex with her and then calls him, "You f*cking slut" and asks, "Who is this dirty whore?" As the argument continues, she says he was "Out trying to f*ck other women" while she's pregnant. After Jenna has kicked him out, Michael returns to Kim's dorm room where they passionately kiss. He moves her up onto a desk where they continue and start to undress (her down to her bra, him shirtless, him grabbing her butt in her short skirt, her leg up alongside him, her panties coming down her legs to her feet, etc.). He's then on top of her on the bed between her legs as they have sex (seen in an overhead, head and shoulders shot and a side shot showing them from the waist up). The scene is dimly lit, but there's movement, some slight views of her bare breasts in the dark, and related sounds and facial expressions. Upset about the turn of events (mainly learning that Michael is about to be a father), Kim complains that he can sleep with her with one minute, and then walk out on her the next. Jenna slaps and then repeatedly whacks at Michael after he confesses he had sex with Kim. SMOKING Izzy smokes once, as do a few miscellaneous characters. TENSE FAMILY SCENES Anna asks Stephen what he'd do if she died, and he doesn't take her question seriously. After she says she feels jealous of her own daughter, she gets mad at him and throws a bottle of perfume (or something similar) at him, with it smashing into the wall above him and breaking. Chris states that he thinks he's going to leave his wife, as he's tired of being told, "How much I suck." Anna goes to see her former lover (she cheated on Stephen 3 years ago), but is disappointed when she learns he's married and a new father (she passionately kisses him once before saying goodbye). She then confronts Stephen during his psychiatric session with a client and blurts out, "I just wanted to let you know I f*cked another man." He then follows her out and takes her into a closet to talk to her, with her saying if he had dragged her into a closet in the past, things might have been different. Anna calls Jenna and tells her that she's leaving her (Jenna's) father. Chris tells his wife that he's moving out (saying their constant arguing will make their son grow up to hate them) and she gets very upset with him. We hear that Izzy's dad died (we earlier saw him on a breathing machine in bed at home) and his friends then comfort him at home. Although not married or even engaged, Michael and Jenna are going to have a baby together, but have a major falling out when he cheats on her. TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT Relationships and what make them work, both for the short term and the long haul. Affairs. Danielle tells Kenny that she shouldn't be bullied (in general) into having a child just because she has a vagina. Kim's comment that people are having life crises before midlife since life is so much faster-paced now than in the past. Michael having a life crisis where he feels that everything is planned out and offers no more surprises. Michael worrying that marriage seems so final and that he won't marry Jenna unless she can name three couples who've been happily married for 5 years. Chris states that he thinks he's going to leave his wife, as he's tired of being told, "How much I suck." Michael stating that weddings make him depressed. Jenna's comment that men are easy (to understand and deal with), and Anna telling her that she hasn't had to deal with a 30 year relationship. It's suggested that a gay couple (two men) live next door to Michael and Jenna. The notion that the only way to make a relationship work is to do whatever it takes to make sure it does. Jenna apparently forgiving Michael (at least partially) for cheating on her. VIOLENCE Mad at what she feels are flippant answers to her questions, Anna throws a bottle of perfume (or something similar) at Stephen, with it smashing into the wall above him and breaking. Izzy finds out where his ex-girlfriend is spending the night, storms in, punches her latest lover in the gut, and then punches him in the jaw upon leaving. While distracted, Michael drives into the path of an oncoming cab, swerves out of the way and crashes into a small tree that then tips over and falls onto his car (he's unhurt). When learning he was with Kim, Jenna slaps Michael. When Michael uses his leg to keep the door from closing, Jenna kicks him there.
