QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: A young woman becomes immersed in the fashion industry when she takes a job working for the demanding and feared editor in chief of an influential magazine.
PLOT:
Andy Sachs (ANNE HATHAWAY) is a recent college graduate who's moved to New York City with her boyfriend Nate (ADRIAN GRENIER) hoping to land a job in journalism. When that doesn't pan out, she manages to score a job interview at Runway, an influential fashion magazine run by Miranda Priestly (MERYL STREEP), the much feared but revered editor in chief who's known for being demanding and firing her assistants. Now second assistant Emily (EMILY BLUNT) has moved into the number one spot, leaving the second one open, but neither she nor fashion director Nigel (STANLEY TUCCI) think Andy is right for the job simply because she doesn't seem to care about fashion. In fact, she's never heard of Runway or Miranda, which is exactly what stirs the despot to hire her.

Andy is soon overwhelmed by Miranda's nonstop demands, a point that entertains her friends Lilly (TRACIE THOMS) and Doug (RICH SOMMER) who like all of the fashion goodies she brings them, but which doesn't sit well with Nate who starts to see less and less of her as the weeks go on. However, Andy eventually gets the hang of both the job and Miranda, leading to her traveling to Paris for a fashion event where she meets writer Christian Thompson (SIMON BAKER) who wants to sweep her off her feet.

Once assimilated into this business and lifestyle, Andy must then decide what she really wants out of life, meaning she must choose between the job, Nate, or possibly some other direction.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Fans of someone in the cast and/or the fashion industry might, but it doesn't seem likely many other kids will.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For some sensuality.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • MERYL STREEP plays a mostly reserved but very particular and demanding editor in chief of a highly influential fashion magazine. She puts her staff through their paces, all while dealing with a less than satisfactory marriage at home.
  • ANNE HATHAWAY plays an aspiring journalist who takes an assistant's job at the magazine as a last resort and must then put up with Miranda's demands and personality. Initially overwhelmed, she eventually gets the hang of the job and will do most anything for her boss. She drinks some, uses some profanity, and apparently has sex with Christian after breaking up with Nate.
  • EMILY BLUNT plays her calloused coworker who bends over backwards for Miranda and can't believe she must work alongside Andy (both for being new and for her apparent lack of high fashion sense).
  • STANLEY TUCCI plays the seemingly gay or at least effeminate fashion director at the magazine who initially looks down on Andy and her fashion sense, but then comes to her rescue, acting somewhat like a mentor to her.
  • ADRIAN GRENIER plays Andy's rumpled boyfriend who initially supports her and her new job, but then becomes disenchanted with both when she chooses work over spending time with him.
  • TRACIE THOMS plays Andy's friend with whom she has drinks but eventually becomes fed up with her change in attitude and behavior.
  • SIMON BAKER plays a writer who tries to woo and eventually apparently beds Andy in Paris.

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this comedy that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of at least 7 "s" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are uttered. Some non-explicit, but sexually related dialogue is present, while sexual encounters occur off-screen (including the protagonist having sex with a man she hasn't known for long, and only days after breaking up with her boyfriend), some models are briefly seen in scanty attire, and varying amounts of cleavage are observed.

Some comedy-based bad attitudes are present, while various characters drink (one is a bit intoxicated) and a woman announces she's getting divorced from her husband (we briefly see and hear them arguing before that). Finally, some brief slapstick style material is present, including a woman being hit by a car resulting in her being injured (but it's all played for comedy).

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there is some of that from the paparazzi taking flash photos.
