QUICK TAKE:
Horror: A half-human, half-vampire tries to avenge her mother's rape and murder by finding and killing the king of vampires whose recent actions have also drawn the interest of vampire hunters who similarly want him dead.
PLOT:
It's 1723 and Rayne (KRISTANNA LOKEN) is a half-human, half-vampire being known as a dhampir. With a taste for blood but not wishing to harm most humans, she's on a quest to find Kagan (BEN KINGSLEY), a powerful vampire leader who raped her mother (thus resulting in Rayne's birth) before killing her later. Accordingly, Rayne wants revenge for both acts, but she's not alone in her quest.

A trio of vampire hunters from the Brimstone Society -- Vladimir (MICHAEL MADSEN), Sebastian (MATT DAVIS) and Katarin (MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ) -- are concerned that Kagan is trying to attain even greater power. It seems that several body parts of a past vampire have been hidden away, and if they're found and brought together, the owner will become invincible. Detesting the thought of that and hating vampires in general, the hunters eventually run into Rayne, and once they realize they have a common goal and that she's not going to hurt them, they join forces.

With Kagan doing everything in his power to get his hands on those pieces, Rayne and the others must contend with that, all while battling his vampire forces led by the dangerous Domastir (WILL SANDERSON).

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of the video game on which this is based, someone in the cast, or vampire movies they might.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For strong bloody violence, some sexuality and nudity.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • KRISTANNA LOKEN plays a half-human, half vampire being who's torn by her dual identity and the fact that the vampire she wants to kill is her biological father (who raped and murdered her mother). As she tries to make her way to him, she battles and kills many other vampires and some humans. She has sex with Sebastian and dresses in a provocative manner.
  • BEN KINGSLEY plays her father, a powerful vampire who wants to collect various body pieces of a former vampire that will make him invincible. He kills or is responsible for the killing of humans, and raped and killed Rayne's mother in the past.
  • MICHAEL MADSEN plays a vampire hunter who also kills many of the beasts and allows Rayne to join forces with them.
  • MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ plays his comrade who also kills various vampires and seems in a perpetually bad mood (she eventually turns against her team).
  • MATT DAVIS plays Vladimir's protégé who's proficient at killing vampires. He also has sex with Rayne.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated horror film. Violence consists of all sorts of lethal and bloody attacks and fighting (vampire vs. human and vampire on vampire, using a variety of weapons), much of which has rather bloody and/or gory results. There's also talk of a past rape (that we might partially see in some poorly filmed/edited flashbacks, while a man appears ready to rape the main character, but she prevents that). All of that material, other moments of potential peril, and various visuals including that of monstrous looking vampires might be unsettling, suspenseful or scary to viewers prone to such reactions (others might not find any of it that way).

A couple has sex (with movement sounds and nudity -- the most explicit of which is repeated views of bare breasts), while that same woman is near constantly seen in some rather revealing attire. Other bare-breasted women are seen as part of what seems like something akin to a harem. Various characters have bad attitudes (of the extreme variety), while some of the fighting and stunts, etc. might be enticing for some kids to imitate. A man appears to be intoxicated, while a vampire orders absinthe but is killed before he has the chance to drink any. Tense family material consists of characters talking of parents who were killed in the past, and a minor character seeing vampires kill her brother.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, various scenes contain camera movement (sometimes quite a bit), some of which might induce such results in susceptible viewers.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • A man orders absinthe in a bar (where Vladimir, Katarin and Sebastian may also be drinking, but we don't know what), but doesn't drink any as Sebastian recognizes him as a vampire and drives a knife or something similar into his chest, killing him.
  • A man (who's apparently intoxicated -- noted by the empty bottle he carries) enters Rayne's carnival cage and appears ready to rape her.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Some of the following is shot and edited in such a confusing manner that it's hard to tell what's occurring.
  • Sebastian recognizes a man as a vampire and drives a knife or something similar into his chest, killing him (he falls to the floor with blood on his shirt before quickly decomposing).
  • A carnival man drags out Rayne who's under his control as part of a show and gets water on her arm (resulting in severe burns since that's what happens to vampires) and then slices her other arm (with bloody results). He then slices a goat (or similar farm animal -- but the act isn't seen in full) and gives the resultant blood to Rayne. She drinks it and her wounds instantly heal back to normal.
  • We see a flashback to Rayne in some field with blood on her face, while we also see various flash images that appear to be bloody, but it's hard to tell what we're seeing.
  • Rayne bites a would-be rapist in the neck, killing him (with bloody results on him and her). She then escapes and fights and kills (via sword impact and biting) many men who try to stop her, including one who tries to strike her with his sword. She slices him (with lots of resultant blood) and then stabs him again with a lethal blow.
  • After finding various dead bodies on the ground at a carnival (that are bloody to varying degrees), Sebastian slices off some of their heads (not seen in full) and Vladimir then pours something flammable on them and then burns them (seen from a distance).
  • We see Rayne's friend who has Rayne's bite marks in her neck and Katarin stabs her to death to put her out of her pending misery.
  • We see a flashback to Rayne accidentally biting her friend on the neck (thinking she was another assailant), wounding her (with bloody results on both).
  • A vampire kills a man by biting into him, but Rayne then shows up and kills that vampire and several others (including by stabbing one and slicing another across the throat -- with lots of resultant blood), drinking the blood from one for nourishment. Her mouth is then bloody from that attack.
  • Rayne goes up as if she's going to kiss another woman in a lesbian fashion, but then bites into her neck, killing her (the victim's face starts to become "veiny" and discolored).
  • A big guard has a huge, disfigured or mutated face.
  • Rayne bashes a guard's head with a spiked club (with bloody results).
  • We see a flashback to various body organs being put into boxes, including what looks like a heart.
  • Intruders attack a monastery, with people being sliced, hit and struck by arrows (including one into the neck), while one is thrown off a building. Many people are killed during this, including by Rayne's actions that include her stabbing one character in the face (with very bloody results), and by Vladimir's team, with some of the deaths being very bloody.
  • We see blood being drained from several chained characters into a cup (from an arm wound, another from the neck -- and all very gory). We later see more of the same.
  • A vampire spreads blood on a woman's bare breast.
  • Rayne appears to bite off a man's ear (his long hair is bloody, but we can't see the wound). Vladimir fires small, wrist-based crossbow arrows into glass windows, shattering them and letting the sunlight in, thus causing the first man to catch on fire and quickly disintegrate into a skeleton and then dust.
  • We see a flashback of Kagan biting Rayne's mom's neck (with a little bit of blood on his lips).
  • We see various flash images of a nightmare (that have bloody imagery in them).
  • A severed head is dropped down in front of another man, but we only see it from behind (and thus only see hair).
  • We see a flashback to an attack on a group of people who are killed (with some bloody results). Back in real time, Domastir stabs down into one of the bodies.
  • The survivor of an attack is bloody.
  • One of the team members turns bad and stabs a person to death (blood comes out).
  • We see various dead and bloody bodies from an earlier attack.
  • Rayne battles Katarin underwater, with struggling and Katarin then stabbing Rayne in the gut (with a little bit of resultant blood). Rayne then swims after Katarin, catches her when she's trying to get out of the water, and bites her on the neck. We see blood on her mouth, and her belly wound then immediately heals.
  • A big battle breaks out between Vladimir, Sebastian and Rayne versus Kagan and his men, with swords and arrows being used to wound and kill some of the latter (with some bloody results as people have swords stabbed into them). Both Vladimir and Sebastian end up being stabbed, while Sebastian stabs Domastir and then slices across his neck (with lots of blood coming out).
  • Rayne stabs Kagan, but he then stabs her twice (with resultant blood on and around her).
  • A vampire quickly decomposes.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Kagan, his goons and other vampires have extreme bad attitudes for their actions and desires.
  • A carnival man is mean to Rayne, while he or another man attempts to rape her later in the film.
  • Rayne states that Kagan raped and killed her mother.
  • One of the team members turns bad and stabs a person to death (blood comes out).
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence," "Blood/Gore" and "Jump Scenes" may be unsettling, suspenseful or scary to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material. Others might not find it that way at all (partially because of the following statement).
  • Some of the following is shot and edited in such a confusing manner that it's hard to tell what's occurring.
  • The sight of various vampires (especially as they transform from normal into monstrous vampire form) might be unsettling or scary for some viewers.
  • A man (who's apparently intoxicated -- noted by the empty bottle he carries) enters Rayne's carnival cage and appears ready to rape her. He gets on top of her, but she grabs the bottle, bashes him on the head with it and then bites into his neck, killing him (with bloody results on him and her). She then escapes and fights and kills (via sword impact and biting) many men who try to stop her, including one who tries to strike her with his sword. She slices him (with lots of resultant blood) and then stabs him again with a lethal blow.
  • We hear supernatural type voices on the soundtrack as Rayne makes her way into a building.
  • A large guard repeatedly tries to strike Rayne with a large mallet or club, smashing it into and damaging walls and pillars in the process. He then comes at her with a spiked club, with her avoiding that before kicking him and then bashing his head with that spiked club (with bloody results).
  • Rayne enters a chamber where huge spinning blades pop out of the floor and race across the room in such a fashion that they'll cut anyone or anything in their path. After seeing how they work, she tosses her sword into the room to activate them and then races through them, safely making it to the other side. She retrieves what she needs, but the room then starts to fill with water (which will burn her upon contact) so she leaps up and grabs a sword she's thrown into the ceiling and then hangs from that as the blade then starts to slip out of its hole.
  • We see that Kagan's goons have Rayne tied down to an altar to remove the magic eye that her body has absorbed (and a knife is held by her face, but that's interrupted before any cutting can begin).
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Swords/Knives/Small crossbow arrows/Huge mallet/Spiked club/Black powder: Used to wound, kill or attempt to kill other characters and/or cause some property damage. See "Violence" for details.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "Freak," "You're such a suck-up" and "Ungrateful bitch."
  • All of the fighting, stunts and other physical action might be enticing for some kids to imitate.
  • Throughout most of the film, Rayne wears something akin to a halter top that shows off her cleavage and bare midriff, while the pants she wears are cut quite low and thus we see a lot of bare skin.
  • Katarin wears a midriff-revealing top.
  • Vladimir spits on Domastir after being captured.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • It's possible some of the sudden facial transformations (from human to monstrous vampire) might startle some younger viewers.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • A extreme amount of suspenseful and ominous music occurs in the film.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • None.
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 1 use of what sounded like "God."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • In old period paintings, we see the side of a male character's bare butt and various male chests.
  • Throughout most of the film, Rayne wears something of a halter top that shows off her cleavage and bare midriff, while the pants she wears are cut quite low and thus we see a lot of bare skin.
  • Rayne goes up as if she's going to kiss another woman in a lesbian fashion, but then bites into her neck.
  • We see a man with a harem of topless women lounging around and caressing him and each other (and he spreads some blood on one's bare breast). When Domastir offers him Rayne, that man says he has more than enough to satisfying his needs.
  • We see a flashback of Rayne's mom showing cleavage.
  • Sebastian and Rayne passionately kiss, start to disrobe (we see her bare breasts) and then have sex while standing (she holds the cell bars that he's backed up against). We see movement and views of her bare breasts and his bare chest, but the actual sexual contact is blocked by an object in the foreground of the shot (we see the movement behind it and hear sexual sounds).
  • SMOKING
  • None.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • A woman states that her brother was just killed by a vampire.
  • Rayne twice states that Kagan raped and later killed his mother in front of her (and we briefly see part of a flashback scene where her mother hides her -- as a child -- as Kagan arrives to rape or kill her).
  • Sebastian states that both of his parents are dead, killed by Vladimir when they started to turn into vampires.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • For those concerned about rape related issues, there's talk of Kagan having raped Rayne's mother in the past, and there are several flashback views that seem to show part of that, but it's unclear if we're seeing that or when he kills her at a later time. Similarly, an intoxicated man appears ready to rape Rayne (who's caged) but she stops him.
  • We briefly see various carnival sideshow characters, such as Siamese twins, etc.
  • Rayne states that Kagan raped and killed her mother.
  • Vampires.
  • Revenge.
  • Bad filmmaking.
  • VIOLENCE
  • Some of the following is shot and edited in such a confusing manner that it's hard to tell what's occurring.
  • In old period paintings, we see a vampire biting another person's neck (no blood), what looks like surgery on a character, and dead characters hanging upside down by their feet from crosses.
  • In a food market, we see a man bash a live bird with something (to kill it for food), but we don't see the impact.
  • A man orders absinthe in a bar, but doesn't drink any as Sebastian recognizes him as a vampire and drives a knife or something similar into his chest, killing him (he falls to the floor with blood on his shirt before quickly decomposing).
  • A carnival man drags out Rayne who's under his control as part of a show and gets water on her arm (resulting in severe burns since that's what happens to vampires) and then slices her other arm (with bloody results).
