QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: After failing to be admitted to any college, a desperate high school senior makes up his own school to appease his parents, unaware of the repercussions that will follow his act.
PLOT:
Bartleby Gaines (JUSTIN LONG) is an average high school senior who has no luck with the girls -- including the object of his desire -- Monica (BLAKE LIVELY) -- or getting admitted to any college, unlike his best friend Sherman Schrader (JONAH HILL) who's all set to be enrolled at Harmon. Seeing how upset his parents are about his academic failure, Bartleby decides to create his own school. With the help of Sherman who creates a web page for the faux South Harmon Institute of Technology, Bartleby proudly shows them his acceptance letter and thinks his problems are solved.

Unfortunately, they want to drop him off on the nonexistent campus and meet the equally null dean. Panicked, Bartleby enlists the aid of Sherman, high school jock Hands (COLUMBUS SHORT), fellow college reject Rory (MARIA THAYER) and chef wannabe Glen (ADAM HERSCHMAN) to create the school out of an abandoned mental hospital. He also persuades Sherman's uncle Ben (LEWIS BLACK) -- a bitter and washed up, former academic -- to serve as the dean.

All goes well until a horde of students show up -- thanks to Sherman's fully functional website that's accepted every other college reject -- and Bartleby doesn't have the heart to tell them the place isn't for real. As he and his friends try to figure out how to run the school on the fly, Sherman must deal with fraternity hazing at the hands of Hoyt (TRAVIS VAN WINKLE), who just so happens to be Monica's boyfriend as well as the lieutenant for Dean Van Horn (ANTHONY HEALD) who wants the former hospital's land to enlarge Harmon's campus.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Those interested in "wild" college comedies and/or who are fans of someone in the cast might be interested in it.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For language, sexual material and drug content.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • JUSTIN LONG plays an average high school senior who invents an acceptance letter from a made-up college to appease his parents after being rejected by a number of real universities. When other students arrive to attend that institution, he must scramble to create a college on the fly (and lies to them and his parents about such matters). He uses some profanity, drinks some, and makes out with Monica.
  • JONAH HILL plays his best friend who must contend with the fraternity hazing at his college, all while trying to assist Bartleby in his progressively elaborate ruse. He uses some profanity.
  • BLAKE LIVELY plays the girl of Bartleby's dreams who doesn't give him a second thought in high school, but takes a liking to him when both are at separate colleges. She drinks some and makes out with him.
  • MARIA THAYER plays an overachiever whose academic dreams are crushed when she isn't accepted into Yale. She then joins Bartleby and the others in creating the fake college. She uses some profanity.
  • ANTHONY HEALD plays the dean of the neighboring college who wants the land under which Bartleby's fake college resides and will do anything to get it.
  • ADAM HERSCHMAN plays a wild guy who ends up becoming the chef at Bartleby's fake college.
  • COLUMBUS SHORT plays the high school jock whose previous injury leaves him without a college to attend, so he joins forces with Bartleby and the others in creating one.
  • LEWIS BLACK plays Sherman's uncle, a former professor who dropped out of academia, and reluctantly joins Bartleby's college as its faux dean. He drinks, briefly uses strong profanity, and rants about the current state of affairs, particularly regarding higher education.
  • TRAVIS VAN WINKLE plays Monica's boyfriend (and cheats on her), a fraternity leader who hazes Sherman and is Dean Van Horn's right-hand man in trying to close down Bartleby's faux college.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this comedy that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of at least 1 "f' word (and another that's bleeped out), while other expletives (including in a song) and all sorts of colorful phrases are also uttered. All sorts of sexually related dialogue and material is present (including two statues showing erect phalluses), as is the sight of various coeds in various styles of revealing attire (including skimpy bikinis).

Slapstick style violence and some property damage occurs (played for comedy), while that and other bits of behavior may be enticing for some kids to imitate. Various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes, some crude humor is present, and there's one comedy scene (featuring what looks like a mummified body falling from a ceiling) that might be unsettling for a few viewers. Finally, various characters drink (and many are seen passed out following a party), while some drug references are made and we briefly see what looks like a drug deal.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there are some strobe effects at a party.
