PLOT: In the underbelly of a dark, forbidding and uncaring metropolis known as Sin City, John Hartigan (BRUCE WILLIS) is one of the last honest cops. On his last day on the force and dealing with a bad ticker, he's trying to find and rescue 11-year-old Nancy (MAKENZIE VEGA) from the clutches of a homicidal pedophile, Roark Jr. (NICK STAHL), whose father, Senator Roark (POWERS BOOTHE), is the most powerful man around. Unfortunately, Hartigan's partner, Bob (MICHAEL MADSEN), is corrupt, allowing John to fall into the hands of the bad guys who torture him for years. When he's finally released, he meets a now grown-up Nancy (JESSICA ALBA), but must contend with a yellow-skinned villain known as Yellow Bastard (NICK STAHL) who wants him dead and is after Nancy. She's an exotic dancer at a bar frequented by Marv (MICKEY ROURKE), a square-jawed hulk of a man whose physical attributes mean he can withstand most any violence, but leaves him unattractive to most women. That is, except for Goldie (JAIME KING), a hooker who shows him affection. When she ends up being killed in their bed by a silent assassin, Kevin (ELIJAH WOOD), Marv goes on a rampage to find out who's responsible, all while dealing with Goldie's twin sister, Wendy (JAIME KING), who similarly has revenge on her mind regarding her sister's death. Shellie (BRITTANY MURPHY) is a waitress at the bar where Nancy dances, and her new boyfriend is Dwight (CLIVE OWEN), a murderer with a new face who doesn't take kindly to apparent thug Jack (BENICIO DEL TORO) and his gang showing up and harassing Shellie. Accordingly, he follows Jack into Sin City's red-light district, but the local hookers there, led by Gail (ROSARIO DAWSON) and including the likes of newcomer Becky (ALEXIS BLEDEL) and veteran Miho (DEVON AOKI), have other plans for Jack. When a cop ends up dead, however, the balance of power between them and others is broken, leading to the involvement of crime boss Manute (MICHAEL CLARKE DUNCAN). WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT? Those who are fans of the original "graphic novels" and/or anyone in the cast might be interested in it, while it may also be enticing to many teenage boys. WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R For sustained strong stylized violence, nudity and sexual content including dialogue. CAST AS ROLE MODELS: JESSICA ALBA plays an exotic dancer at a club who grew up from the girl that Hartigan rescued from a pedophile. She ends up coming on to him. DEVON AOKI plays a hooker and martial arts expert who kills various lowlifes with her related weaponry. ALEXIS BLEDEL plays a young hooker who ends up turning on her workplace associates. POWERS BOOTHE plays a corrupt but powerful Senator who has it out for Hartigan. ROSARIO DAWSON plays the leader of the hookers who plots to kill Jack and still has a thing for Dwight. She smokes several times. BENICIO DEL TORO plays an apparent thug who's jealous of Shellie seeing Dwight and strikes her. He also propositions Becky on the street, and drinks and smokes. MICHAEL CLARKE DUNCAN plays a crime boss who's upset with Gail and strikes her. JAIME KING plays a hooker who sleeps with Marv, and also plays her twin sister who repeatedly tries to kill him, thinking he's responsible for her sister's death. MICHAEL MADSEN plays Hartigan's corrupt partner who shoots and severely wounds him. BRITTANY MURPHY plays a bar waitress who's now seeing Dwight but must contend with Jack and his jealous rage. CLIVE OWEN plays a murderer with a new face who wants to put Jack in his place. He smokes several times. MICKEY ROURKE plays a nearly indestructible hulk of a man who sleeps with Goldie and then wants revenge on whoever killed her. He ends up killing various lowlifes, drinks and smokes a great deal. NICK STAHL plays Senator Roark's pedophilic son who's abducted Nancy, and also plays his later, yellow-skinned self who's still after Nancy and wants Hartigan dead. MAKENZIE VEGA plays Nancy at 11-years-old who's abducted by Roark Jr. BRUCE WILLIS plays the last honest cop in Sin City who's trying to save young Nancy but must deal with a bad heart and rampant corruption. ELIJAH WOOD plays a cannibalistic killer who kills Goldie, has apparently killed others and tries to kill Marv. CAST, CREW, & TECHNICAL INFO HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit? Then read OUR TAKE of this film. OUR WORD TO PARENTS: The following is a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated and action-filled drama. Profanity consists of at least 4 "s" words, while many other expletives and a slew of colorful phrases are uttered. Sexually related dialogue is present, as is a sexual encounter (with movement and nudity). A woman is seen in just a thong bottom, a dead, bare-breasted woman is present, various hookers are seen in extremely revealing attire (much of it of the see-thru, fishnet variety) and an exotic dancer does some sexualized dancing in a club. Violence consists of all sorts of brutal and extremely bloody killings via various means (with the blood being red, white and yellow in color), other bloodless deaths and murders, and other harsh contact (severe punching, beatings, pummeling, etc.). Included in that violence is a pedophile whipping his victim (other related material is present), a death by the electric chair, a near hanging by a noose, a man ripping the genitals from another man, a suicide, a dog feeding on a villain's limb-less torso and much more. Some of that material and other moments of peril might be unsettling or suspenseful to some characters, while the majority of characters (bad and "good") have varying degrees of bad attitudes. Some of that fighting and other stunts may be enticing for some kids to imitate. Various characters drink and/or smoke, with one downing many unknown prescription drugs. ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE Marv drinks in a bar. Marv's parole officer has given him some sort of prescription drugs that he downs in mass quantities. Various people drink in a club, including Dwight and Marv who does several shots. Marv downs more prescription pills. Marv drinks a beer and loudly belches. Shellie talks of Jack being drunk often. Some of his goons then drink beer from Shellie's fridge. Jack drinks while driving. After a cop is killed, one of the hookers says it will be like the old days with the pimps, beatings and drugs. Senator Roark drinks from a flask. Miscellaneous people have drinks in a club. BLOOD/GORE Much of the copious amounts of blood on display is shown in black and white, although there are various instances of color. Hartigan shoots off Roark Jr.'s ear, then his hand and then shoots him in the crotch (done graphically, but also in a cartoon and not entirely realistic fashion). Bob shoots Hartigan many times in the back (with the latter's blood showing up white on screen, and there's a lot). After a pause, he shoots him several more times again (with more white blood). Marv has various bloody cuts on his face. Marv holds a bad guy's head under the water of a dirty toilet and punches him in that position. We then see him driving along with his door open, dragging the guy's face along the road (with bloody results). Not liking what a priest has said in a confessional, Marv shoots him several times (no impact, but we see a bloody bullet hole in the priest's head). Marv's face is very bloody (with huge/deep gashes and scrapes) after battling Kevin. A woman shows Marv the stitch-closed stump on the end of her arm and says that Kevin made her eat her own hand. Marv kills many goons with a hatchet or small ax, hitting one in the crotch and another in the head (with bloody results). Marv has even more blood on his face. Marv has Kevin cuffed and punches him quite hard in the face, with lots of blood splatter flying away. We see that Marv has cut off a man's arms and legs (very bloody results) and has tied tubing around the stumps to stop the blood flow and keep him alive (his face is also very bloody). A menacing dog then approaches and we then see the silhouette of the dog pulling flesh off the man's body (with Marv stating that the man was calm throughout this). We later see Marv holding the man's severed head that he places down on a book in a man's office. We see blood splattering onto Marv's face as he kills a villainous priest (we don't see the impact). We see surgeons whose gowns are covered in blood during surgery. Some men pummel Marv with bats, severely bloodying him. A man is electrocuted in an electric chair, with the first jolt jarring his body and causing a lot of blood to flow from his mouth. The second zaps him even harder and apparently kills him. We see the silhouette of Jack hitting Shellie (and she has a bloody lip after that). Jack states, "I gotta take a leak." Jack vomits after Dwight holds his head under the water in a toilet. Ignoring advice that the barrel of his handgun has been jammed, a man shoots it at one of the hookers anyway, causing it to misfire and the barrel blasts off the gun backwards, impaling him in his forehead (with bloody results, although it's white in color). We then see a lot of that white blood on him and in a pool beneath him on the street. We see lots of blood splatter on Miho from killing a goon with her sword (where we hear she made a Pez dispenser of his head - which we don't see). When a bunch of goons' dead bodies are too big to fit into a car trunk, Miho slices them up into smaller pieces (mostly off-camera, but we see Dwight holding two recently severed legs with white blood on them). We see a dead man again with a gun barrel impaled in his forehead. He then seems to be alive, but we then see that it appears that's just another person's imagination/guilt. Dwight shoots several men dead (including through an already dead man's head). A man holds a severed head and we see this several times. We see several men with arrows in them, including one in the head. Miho slices off a person's head. Miho stabs her blade through a man's body (we see it come out his chest) and she twists it to inflict more pain. Gail bites Becky on the neck or ear, with bloody results. An arrow goes through a guy's torso and then is played for laughs as he makes some joking comments about it until another arrow hits him in the head, killing him. We see many dead people with arrows in them. Dwight has blood or tar on his face. A man brutally punches Hartigan many times in the face and body, with lots of resultant blood. Hartigan is shown a severed finger that has a bloody stump. Hartigan has a bloody lip. Hartigan shoots Yellow Bastard, wounding him. We see blood come out, and then see yellow blood in the snow. Hartigan has some of the man's blood on his hands. Hartigan has some blood in his hand after coughing into it. Hartigan stabs a villain in the chest. We then see a long view of him apparently ripping off his genitals and pummeling his face until there's nothing left, all with lots of yellow blood and goo splattering out and covering Hartigan and the floor around the villain. DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE All of the film's various villains have extreme cases of bad attitudes, as do some of the anti-heroes, such as Marv and the various prostitutes, who take the law into their own hands and kill people and more. We hear that an 11-year-old girl will be raped and slashed up if Hartigan doesn't stop the perp. We then see that Roark Jr. has young Nancy tied to a chair. Bob shoots Hartigan (his cop partner) many times in the back (with the latter's blood showing up white on screen, and there's a lot). After a pause, he shoots him several more times again (with more white blood). We see a woman, Lucille, in just a thong bottom get up out of bed (we see her bare breasts and most of her bare butt cheeks). Marv comments on her being a "dyke" and says he doesn't know why since she had a body with which she could get any guy. Not liking what a priest has said in a confessional, Marv shoots him several times. We see that Kevin has several women's severed heads mounted on his wall like hunting trophies. The term "equipment" is used (for penis) and something is then referred to as "boner inspiring." Yellow Bastard (wearing just shorts) whips a tied-up Nancy, saying that this is just foreplay. She then sarcastically tells him, "You can't get it up unless I scream." SMOKING Marv smokes around 10 times, Gail and Dwight each smoke several times, while Bob, Lucille, Wendy, Jack and several other minor and miscellaneous characters smoke at least once. An assassin offers a cigarette to a woman and she smokes. He later offers the same to his next victim. In the cartoon still credits, we see a person smoking. TENSE FAMILY SCENES Hartigan hears that his wife remarried and had children while he was locked away for eight years. TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT Corruption. Pedophiles. Cannibalism (we hear that Kevin eats his victims). We see a villain with a swastika on his head. Hartigan confesses to being a child molester (something he's not) just to save a young woman's life. VIOLENCE An assassin shoots a woman he's embracing with a silencer equipped gun (we don't see the impact or any blood). Hartigan punches Bob unconscious. We hear that an 11-year-old girl will be raped and slashed up if Hartigan doesn't stop the perp. We then see that Roark Jr. has young Nancy tied to a chair. Hartigan uses a large pipe to strike one man on the head and knock a gun from another before hitting him. He then shoots two goons before Roark Jr. shoots him in the arm (he then carries off that girl). Hartigan then shoots off Roark Jr.'s ear, then his hand and then shoots him in the crotch (done graphically, but also in a cartoon and not entirely realistic fashion). It's suggested that Kevin kills the hooker with Marv. Marv blasts open a door, knocking several goons backwards. He then jumps down an open stairwell (many stories) with other goons shooting at him. Once outside, he runs and jumps through a car's windshield, striking the two men inside quite severely. Marv comes across a guy bashing another guy into a door. When that guy tries to stop Marv, Marv grabs him, pushes hard into his eyes and then pushes him down to the floor. Some goons hold guns on Marv and take him outside. There, he hits one, grabs the other and shoots the first guy with the second's gun. He then bashes the second against a wall, hits him, and shoots them again. Marv holds a bad guy's head under the water of a dirty toilet and punches him in that position. We then see him driving along with his door open, dragging the guy's face along the road (with bloody results). Not liking what a priest has said in a confessional, Marv shoots him several times (no impact, but we see a bloody bullet hole in the priest's head). Wendy repeatedly drives into Marv at high speed, flipping him through the air. She also shoots him several times (he's wounded, but lives). Marv punches a menacing dog, causing it to yelp before losing consciousness. Kevin sneaks up on Marv and kicks him several times before scratching Marv's eyes with his long nails. Marv then bashes him with a sledgehammer. We see that Kevin has several women's severed heads mounted on his wall like hunting trophies. Marv rips the bars from a cell wall. A woman hits Marv over the head, knocking him out. A man shoots a woman dead with a machine gun. Marv kills many goons with a hatchet or small ax, hitting one in the crotch and another in the head (with bloody results). Marv shoots the statue of the man he's after. Wendy shoots Marv several times, before hitting him several times in the face with a handgun (brutal blows while trying to interrogate him, but it turns out he's just letting her do that). Marv sets up razor wire as a potential trap for Kevin. He then throws a Molotov cocktail into a building that then explodes. Kevin avoids the razor wire and Marv shoots at him several times before the two get into a hand-to-hand fight during which Kevin is cut on the arm. Moments later, Marv has Kevin cuffed and punches him quite hard in the face, with lots of blood splatter flying away. Marv punches a woman unconscious. Dwight shoots several men dead (including through an already dead man's head), but a small grenade blows him and a car into a nearby tar pit. He then starts to sink and we think he's going to drown, but Miho saves him. We see several men with arrows in them, including one in the head. We see man hanging from a life-size T-Rex statue and then hear Dwight stab into him with a knife (we then see the knife sticking out of him). There's a car crash, a woman is riddled with machine gun fire and Miho slices off one person's head, but a grenade blows her backwards. An explosive blows Dwight backwards inside a sewer tunnel. Miho stabs her blade through a man's body (we see it come out his chest) and she twists it to inflict more pain. Manute holds Gail's head and we hear cracking sounds from it and/or her neck. Gail bites Becky on the neck or ear, with bloody results. Manute hits Gail (who's tied to a chair) so hard that she flies across the room. An arrow goes through a guy's torso and then is played for laughs as he makes some joking comments about it until another arrow hits him in the head, killing him. We see many dead people with arrows in them. A bomb in a severed head explodes, knocking several people backwards. Dwight, Gail and other hookers riddle several people with gunfire, killing them. A corrupt man holds a gun on Hartigan in a hospital. A man brutally punches Hartigan many times in the face and body, with lots of resultant blood. Yellow Bastard punches Hartigan in the face. As their cars race down the road, Yellow Bastard shoots at Hartigan and Nancy as she drives, with Hartigan then firing back and hitting Yellow Bastard, wounding him. We see blood come out and his car then crashes. Hartigan and Nancy go to the car crash sight and see yellow blood in the snow, and Hartigan has some of the man's blood on his hands. Yellow Bastard twice punches Hartigan and then has his foot on Hartigan's head on the ground. Yellow Bastard holds a needle to Nancy's neck. We see that Yellow Bastard has Hartigan bound with his head in a noose and his feet barely touching a table he's standing on. Moments later, he pushes the table away, causing Hartigan to dangle from the tightening noose. Hartigan then starts to swing himself on that noose and breaks through a window. Hartigan punches one man and holds another man's head just above some sharp, broken glass. Hartigan slices a guard's throat and kills another (no blood). Yellow Bastard (wearing just shorts) whips a tied-up Nancy, saying that this is just foreplay. She then sarcastically tells him, "You can't get it up unless I scream." Hartigan is shot in the shoulder, but shoots two more guards dead (hitting them in their helmets, but there's no blood). Yellow Bastard threatens Nancy with a knife. Hartigan stabs a villain in the chest. We then see a long view of him apparently ripping off his genitals and pummeling his face until there's nothing left, all with lots of yellow blood and goo splattering out and covering Hartigan and the floor around the villain.
