QUICK TAKE:
Drama: Despite her born-again brother's objections, a young woman enters into a heated lesbian affair with a rich but rebellious student.
PLOT:
Mona (NATHALIE PRESS) is a young woman who lives with her older brother Phil (PADDY CONSIDINE) in a pub he once ran. Having served time in prison, Phil has become born-again and has decided to turn the pub into a temple of sorts, where he hopes to help Mona see the light. Shocked at his sudden turn in personality, Mona wants nothing to do with that.

She finds a release and kindred spirit in Tamsin (EMILY BLUNT), a rich and well-educated but bored student who's there for the summer with her emotionally distant family. The two become fast friends -- discussing their lives, past, present and future -- and that eventually leads to them falling for each other.

Despite her brother's objections to her being in a lesbian relationship and repeatedly trying to save her, Mona continues her affair with Tamsin who seems to enjoy manipulating others for her own personal gratification. As their apparent love for each other deepens, the two face unexpected developments in their relationship.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Older teens might be drawn to it, but it otherwise doesn't seem like a big draw (unless the lesbian angle proves enticing to some).
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For sexuality, language and some drug use.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • NATHALIE PRESS plays a young woman who finds an escape, from what she sees as her brother's religious overbearingness, in the form of a lesbian relationship with Tamsin. She mocks Phil's religion, uses drugs, smokes, drinks, uses strong profanity, and has sex with a married guy as well as Mona.
  • EMILY BLUNT plays a wealthy and well-educated student who enjoys manipulating others and enters into a lesbian relationship with Mona. She also smokes, drinks, uses drugs and strong profanity, and has sex with Mona.
  • PADDY CONSIDINE plays Mona's born-again, ex-con brother who wants to save her and isn't happy about the way she's acting (he eventually gets violent with her and Tamsin).

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated drama. Profanity consists of at least 28 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are uttered. Sexually related dialogue (some of it explicit) is present, as are several sexual encounters (hetero and lesbian, with movement, related sounds, nudity, kissing, etc.). The two girls go through various mock heterosexual positions, and are seen in their bras and panties (including sunbathing that way, while one is topless during this and doesn't cover up when a man shows up).

Violence consists of a person nearly drowning another, and a man getting physical with two different women (nearly strangling one and hitting/kicking his sister rather brutally). Some of that might be unsettling for some viewers, while other bad attitudes are present. That material and other moments lead to tense family material (one serious bit about a past family death turns out to have been made up), while various bits of potentially imitative behavior are present. That includes young women smoking, drinking and using drugs (mushrooms and possibly pot).

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, much of the camera work is of the hand-held variety, and a great deal of it's shaky, especially when in close-up mode.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • We see Phil emptying all of the bottles of liquor in his former pub.
  • Mona drinks beer while in the bathtub.
  • Mona has a drink.
  • Mona and Tamsin have wine. Tamsin then has more, and later she and Mona have even more. We then see the two lying on a grass tennis court, with the bottle by them and Tamsin smoking what looks like a joint. Mona later wakes up alone and sees Tamsin having dinner with her parents who have wine on the table.
  • Mona and Tamsin have what looks like brandy.
  • Tamsin and Mona do more drinking.
  • Tamsin holds a drink while in bed.
  • Tamsin retrieves dried hallucinogenic mushrooms from her sister's large dollhouse. She and Mona then consume some of them (with Tamsin saying they can communicate with her dead sister by doing so) and later appear high and have slight hallucinations.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • None.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Tamsin mentions something about being suspended from school.
  • Some viewers will not like how Mona and Tamsin refer, react to and interact with Phil and other born-again Christians (making fun of them -- including Tamsin asking about Phil "Is he completely mad?" and Mona saying he came out of prison "funny," saying that God is dead, faking being the Devil, Tamsin coming on to Phil to prove he's not so clean-cut, etc.). Later, Mona mentions something about God being like one day-long orgasm for her brother, and then says something about "going down on him."
  • Mona's boyfriend, who we later learn is married with kids, breaks up with her, but not before having sex one final time.
  • We hear that Phil went to prison for robbery and beating up people.
  • Mona tells her brother, "I think you're a f*cking fake."
  • Tamsin mentions that her father is having an affair with his secretary (as she and Mona spy on the secretary's place).
  • After Tamsin states that her father is having an affair, Mona grabs a lawn gnome and bashes his car window with it (the two girls then run off).
  • The girls go to see the wife of Mona's ex-lover, with Tamsin lying that Mona just aborted his child and that the wife is not satisfying him at home (doing so just to get a rise out of the woman, as well as let her know that her husband is cheating on her).
  • For those opposed to occult-related materials, Mona and Tamsin set up their own version of a Ouija board and contact Tamsin's dead sister.
  • We see Tamsin standing in her open nightgown that shows her bra and cleavage. When Phil shows up at her house (where Mona is spending the night), Tamsin goes down to subtly taunt him (although she closes her robe before going down). The two then talk about religious matters, with Tamsin getting him worked up and placing his hand on her bare chest above her bra and then up along her neck to her face. He then starts to move in to kiss her, but she laughs and lets on that it was just a ruse. He then gets violent with her.
  • Mad at how things have turned out and thinking his followers are fakes, Phil curses at them (using the "f" word) and even throws what's presumably the Bible at the wall in anger. He also beats up Mona.
  • We learn that a person has been lying about their life and faking other parts of it as part of a game they're playing with another person.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Mona and Tamsin set up their own version of an Ouija board and contact Tamsin's dead sister. While no scary music plays, both girls claim they're not moving their indicator glass that indicates it's channeling Tamsin's dead sister.
  • Mad that Tamsin has led him on sexually/religiously, Phil briefly grabs her by the throat, causing her pain and a look of fear in her eyes. He then physically removes Mona from the house and puts her in his car.
  • Phil hears a noise from upstairs, races to Mona's room and finds her slumped on the floor with a bed sheet tied around her neck. She appears to be dead or unconscious, but then does a mock imitation of the Devil to taunt him (saying, "I am the anti-Christ"). He then slaps her on the face and then kicks her on the floor (we hear, but don't see the impact, but then do see her crying while lying curled up in the fetal position on the floor).
  • While kissing a second person in a body of water, the first then puts their hands around the second's neck and then pushes their head under the water, holding them there while they struggle (the first eventually lets the second up who then gasps for air).
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • None.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Some of the accents are quite strong. Thus, some of the dialogue is hard to understand and may contain material not listed here. That said, we heard the following phrases: "F*cking will not," "Get f*cked over," "I think you're a f*cking fake," "F*ck off," "F*cking whore," "Oh f*ck," "F*cking hell," "For f*ck's sakes," "I'm f*cking freezing," "Don't f*cking touch me," "What the f*ck are you doing?" "You f*cking crazy bitch," "Shag" (have sex), "You're a bastard," "All that crap," "I bloody did not," "Bollocks," "Fags" (cigarettes) and "Shut up."
  • Mona draws a portrait of Tamsin's face on her wall.
  • Mona wears a midriff-revealing top.
  • After Tamsin states that her father is having an affair, Mona grabs a lawn gnome and bashes his car window with it (the two girls then run off).
  • Mona wears a midriff-revealing top.
  • We see a guy with some tattoos.
  • Both girls wear midriff-revealing tops.
  • Mona lifts her head up out of the bathtub and acts like she's possessed by the Devil (including using a raspy voice), with Tamsin then mockingly performing an exorcism on her.
  • Mona and Tamsin set up their own version of an Ouija board and contact Tamsin's dead sister.
  • Tamsin retrieves dried hallucinogenic mushrooms from her sister's large dollhouse. She and Mona then consume some of them.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • None.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • None.
  • PROFANITY
  • Some of the accents are quite strong. Thus, some of the dialogue is hard to understand and may contain material not listed here. That said, we heard the following: At least 28 "f" words (2 used sexually as are variations of "shag"), 1 possible "s" word, 1 slang term using female genitals ("tw*t"), 1 for breasts ("t*ts"), 1 ass, 1 bollocks, 1 crap, 1 hell and 1 use each of "Christ" and "God."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • We hear sexual sounds from Mona and then see her having sex with a guy in the rear entry position. There's no full view of this, but rather partial shots and close-ups of their faces (with sexual expressions and noted movement of their bodies).
  • Tamsin shows some cleavage in a bikini top.
  • Tamsin mentions that her father is having an affair with his secretary (as she and Mona spy on the secretary's place). She then says, "He's f*cking her now," adding that he has her bent over something, "f*cking her in the ass" and comments on "big t*ts."
  • Tamsin shows a little cleavage.
  • Tamsin has Mona spend the night and the two share the same bed, but do so platonically.
  • We see Mona and Tamsin frolicking in a body of water in just their small bras and panties, playfully splashing water onto each other. They then sink down until just their heads are above the surface and briefly kiss.
  • We see Mona dancing around in her bra and panties while trying on clothes (with some brief, close-up shots of her bra and cleavage).
  • To console Tamsin, Mona kisses various parts of her face, finally ending with a brief kiss on the lips.
  • We see Mona and Tamsin doing some passionate kissing on the ground. The scene then cuts to a shot of Tamsin in bed, with a pleasured look on her face, some soft related sounds, views of her bare breasts and then Mona moving up her body (possibly suggesting oral sex or some other sort of pleasurable activity for Tamsin). The two then do some kissing and act sensuously toward each other with some slight rolling around.
  • Tamsin gets out of bed at night and walks over to the window. We see a full body shot of her in the shadows/dark (with partial views of her bare butt as well as better lit views of the side of her bare breast).
  • Tamsin asks Mona, "Do you f*ck a lot?" Mona replies that she does so to "get my kicks," with Tamsin then wondering what it's like. They then talk about Mona's last boyfriend, Ricky, and Tamsin wonders, "How'd he shag you?" and asks if it was horribly. Mona replies no, that it was normal, with Tamsin then telling her to show her. Mona then jokingly asks, "Do you want to be shagged by Ricky?" Tamsin indicates she does and Mona then does a mock sexual act, pretending to be Ricky while Tamsin plays her. Both are in bed but partially clothed and Mona begins in the missionary position and then moves Tamsin around for the rear entry one, doing mock male thrusting movements with her hips and making exaggerated sounds (the views of them alternate between partial body shots and close-ups of their faces, but neither acts like this is erotic or arousing -- with Tamsin looking somewhat surprised).
  • We see Tamsin in a bikini top that shows cleavage.
  • The girls go to see the wife of Mona's ex-lover, with Tamsin lying that Mona just aborted his child and that the wife is not satisfying him at home (doing so just to get a rise out of the woman, as well as let her know that her husband is cheating on her).
  • We see Mona (in bra and panties) and Tamsin (in just panties) sunbathing on the ground. We thus see several views of Tamsin's bare breasts and she makes no effort to cover herself up when Phil shows up to talk to Mona.
  • Mona mentions something about God being like one day-long orgasm for her brother, and then says something about "going down on him" (some viewers might not like such references).
  • Tamsin and Mona do some passionate kissing in a club while high.
  • We see a silhouetted, sensual moment between Mona and Tamsin (in close-up, with a brief, sensuous kiss as a fire burns behind them).
  • Mona shows a little cleavage.
  • We see a close-up of Mona and Tamsin (both fully clothed) doing some passionate kissing in a body of water.
  • SMOKING
  • Mona smokes at least 10 times, Tamsin smoke at least 4 times, and a minor character smokes after sex.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • Mona states that she didn't know her dad and that her mom died of cancer.
  • Tamsin states that her sister died of anorexia (Spoiler Alert: but we later learn that's not true). She then says that no one in the family goes into her dead sister's room that's now something of a shrine.
  • The relationship between Mona and Phil becomes progressively strained throughout the film.
  • Mona tells Phil that she misses the old version of him (before he was born-again) and then cries about that.
  • Tamsin cries about her sister, how she changed when she became anorexic, and how she misses her.
  • The girls go to see the wife of Mona's ex-lover, with Tamsin lying that Mona just aborted his child and that the wife is not satisfying him at home (doing so just to get a rise out of the woman, as well as let her know that her husband is cheating on her).
  • Tamsin says that her father didn't love her sister enough and that's why she died.
  • Phil locks Mona in her room, with her pleading to be let out.
