QUICK TAKE:
Suspense/Thriller: Left alone on a remote, deserted island, a small group of FBI agents discovers that their training exercise has turned into the real thing when a serial killer starts picking them off one by one.
PLOT:
Jake Harris (VAL KILMER) is a veteran FBI instructor who's known for immersing his agent-students in realistic training situations, hoping that they'll learn from both their successes and mistakes. His latest class -- that includes team leader J.D. Reston (CHRISTIAN SLATER), his secret lover Nicole Willis (PATRICIA VELASQUEZ), cocksure Lucas Harper (JONNY LEE MILLER), wheelchair bound Vince Sherman (CLIFTON COLLINS JR.), afraid of the water Sara Moore (KATHRYN MORRIS) and Bobby Whitman (EION BAILEY) and Rafe Perry (WILL KEMP) -- are headed for a remote island normally used for war games practice, but that's now deserted for the weekend.

Harris has set up a scenario where a serial killer known as the Puppeteer is busy at work and the instructor's students -- as their final exam -- must figure out who the perp is and stop him or her. While Harris and their helicopter pilot leave the island, the group is joined by Gabe Jensen (LL COOL J) who says he's a profiler with the Philadelphia Police Department sent to see how Harris' methods work.

The seven profiler wannabes then split up and begin looking for clues for a faked murder that they discover. Yet, when one of them is killed via a booby trap and their one means of escape -- a boat at the end of the dock -- explodes, they suddenly realize that their training exercise has turned real and deadly. As more of them end up being killed, the survivors try to figure out who's responsible, eventually deciding that it must be someone within their group.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of the CSI or FBI profiler shows on TV, or someone in the cast, they just might.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For violence/strong graphic images, language and sexual content.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
To avoid giving away the identity of the killer, that attribute is not listed below.
  • VAL KILMER plays the group's instructor who's known for his unorthodox training methods, including sending his students to a remote island where they must solve a serial killer mystery.
  • CHRISTIAN SLATER plays the FBI student's unofficial leader who uses some profanity and has sex with Nicole in the shower.
  • LL COOL J plays an outsider sent to observe Harris and his class, and then finds himself caught up in a real-life killing spree where he goes from being a suspect to suspecting others and back again.
  • KATHRYN MORRIS plays an aspiring FBI profiler who finds herself in the same situation and has a fear of water due to a family tragedy in her past.
  • CLIFTON COLLINS JR. plays a wheelchair bound FBI agent who doesn't let his disability prevent him from participating and trying to identify the killer.
  • JONNY LEE MILLER plays another wannabe profiler who works on trying to solve the group's increasingly dire situation. He uses strong profanity.
  • PATRICIA VELASQUEZ plays J.D. secret lover (she has sex with him in the shower) who becomes increasingly suspicious of the others. She smokes and otherwise craves doing so.
  • EION BAILEY plays another would-be profiler who uses some strong profanity in the face of his unexpected crisis.
  • WILL KEMP plays another FBI agent caught in the same situation.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a brief summary of the content found in this suspense/thriller that's been rated R. Profanity consists of at least 24 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are uttered. Some sexually related dialogue is present, while a couple fools around in a shower (his bare butt, partial glimpses of her bare breasts and a subsequent scene meant to make us think we're seeing sex, when we're just seeing another character doing pushups).

Violence consists of a serial killer murdering various people by various means (with very bloody and gory results), while brutal fighting and an attempted drowning are also present. Some of that material (the fighting and use of booby traps) might be enticing for some kids to imitate, while that and various moments of peril (including lots of pointing of guns at others) may be unsettling or suspenseful to some viewers (while various "jump scenes" are also present). The killer obviously has a bad attitude, while others are present during tense moments.

There's talk of past family deaths, while some characters drink and/or smoke. If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there's some disorienting camerawork during a scene representing the agents' disorientation from being drugged. There are also several spin around camera shots that might have that effect and/or prove to be disorienting.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • The various agents drink in a bar where others drink.
  • Lucas states that he lost both of his parents when he was 10. He then adds that he took up smoking, drinking, and then turned 11.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • We see flash images of dead and bloody murder victims (some with a lot of blood).
  • We see many dead and bloody animals (cats, etc.) hanging from a ceiling (we later learn that they may be fake).
  • A dead suspect is seated in a chair with a smoking shotgun in his hands and a gunshot wound out of the top of his head (but we then learn that it's just a mannequin).
  • Sara suddenly sees a dead and bloody cat strung up behind her, with a small watch tucked inside it (when pulled out, it has bloody goo on it).
  • Some of the agents enter a fake home in the fake training town, and spot all sorts of gross-looking worms crawling on the mannequins, including out of one's mouth.
  • The agents discover a training mannequin strung up from the ceiling, with blood on it and hooks through its hands and legs (other presumably fake blood is elsewhere in the room).
  • A canister of ultra cold gas falls down and sprays on one of the agent's legs, freezing them solid. The rest of his body then breaks off from those lower legs and feet that are frozen to the floor, and then his frozen torso also breaks open, resulting in his death. The two wounds (broken legs and torso) have gory, but frozen looking results.
  • Some of the agents have some bloody cuts on their faces and other skin following an explosion. We then see Sara removing shrapnel from Lucas' bloody shoulder.
  • When an agent is pulled back in his seat from being slumped over a table, his head suddenly falls off (we see the meaty neck stump, but there's no blood as one agent comments on him having had his blood drained from his body).
  • We see many numbers written on a large glass wall in blood.
  • Some metal rods fly out and impale a man, mortally wounding him (including one through his neck -- with some blood around that).
  • As Sara washes her hands, we see some blood run off and down the drain.
  • Some of the dead bodies are briefly seen in cold storage.
  • Surviving members prick their fingers to draw blood (that we see on fingertips and in vials) for blood tests.
  • When a person smokes, acid in the cigarette drips onto their shoe, but then also causes their finger and lips to bleed. We then see growing bloody wounds on their face and finally blood that's soaked through their shirt (that person dies from such wounds).
  • Vince retrieves a handgun off a headless body in the morgue.
  • We see a man who's been strung up from the ceiling like a puppet, with various wires and hooks through various parts of his body (face, hands, legs, etc.). He's extremely bloody. We also see another dead and bloody man (who's not strung up). We then see recorded footage of the first man while alive and his face is bloody then (but the footage is black and white). We then see a figure block the camera shot but hear him slitting the first man's throat.
  • An agent is riddled with gunfire and falls to the street, bloody and seemingly dead (but we later see him alive thanks to a bulletproof vest).
  • After thinking he's seen or heard figures moving about him, a man drags himself onto an elevator and wants the doors to close. He then readies his gun, but it's been booby trapped and blows shrapnel backwards at him (we see blood splatter onto the wall, and then later see the bloody body with big holes in his face and arm, and more blood on the wall).
  • Two men are somewhat bloody after fighting each other.
  • A survivor shoots the killer, with some blood coming from the latter's mouth. When that doesn't quite do the trick, the survivor shoots the killer again, this time with a bloody trickle running down their face and then spreading in the water once the body falls in.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • The killer obviously has a bad attitude for killing the others.
  • Various characters develop bad attitude toward the others when they suspect them of being the killer (and thus treat them badly).
  • The killer admits that he killed his parents and that no one suspected him of doing so since he was just a kid.
  • Some viewers might not like a man telling a woman that it's a good thing she hits like a girl (referring to when she clocked him on the head with a fire extinguisher, but didn't kill him).
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence," "Blood/Gore" and "Jump Scenes" may be unsettling, suspenseful or scary to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material.
  • We see brief shots of a girl underwater, with accompanying screams (we later hear she was drowned). We later briefly see the body floating or sinking limp in the water (this is all a dream or flashback).
  • We see the POV of someone approaching a car in the woods at night where Sara is asleep inside it (but it turns out to be J.D., her partner, returning to it).
  • J.D. and Sara discover a large house in the woods at night and then hear screams coming from it. Sara goes to investigate and hears more screams, followed by them kicking in the door and entering with their guns drawn. They then find many dead and bloody animals hanging from the ceiling. We then see a figure pass behind Sara (but it turns out to be J.D.). They then hear the sounds of a music box, screams and gunshots, and quickly, but cautiously make their way through the house looking for that. They then enter a room where the figures of two young girls are in a bathtub and a dead suspect is seated in a chair with a smoking shotgun in his hands and a gunshot wound out of the top of his head. J.D. then realizes something isn't right, but just then a person enters the room, stabs Sara in the chest with a knife and then holds her as J.D. fires shots at him as the suspect fires back while holding Sara and her gun. (Spoiler Alert: We then see that this has just been a training exercise and the suspect is another agent).
  • As J.D. showers, we see the point of view of someone approaching him. He then thinks he's heard something and a hand suddenly cover his mouth (but it's Nicole wanting to have sex with him).
  • The group discovers a radio playing that, when turned up, sets off a literal and figurative domino effect. That results in a canister of ultra cold gas falling off and spraying on one of the agent's legs, freezing them solid. The rest of his body then breaks off from those lower legs and feet that are frozen to the floor, and then his frozen torso also breaks open, resulting in his death. The two wounds (broken legs and torso) have gory, but frozen looking results.
  • Believing Gabe to be the suspect, all of the agents aim their guns at him. He then suddenly collapses to the floor, as do the other agents, one by one (their coffee was spiked and some land hard on the hard floor, resulting in all of them being unconscious).
  • When an agent is pulled back in his seat from being slumped over a table, his head suddenly falls off (we see the meaty neck stump, but there's no blood as one agent comments on him having had his blood drained from his body).
  • Once the group realizes what's going on, they have to deal with finding various watches set at particular times where they know that one of them will die when that time is reached (this occurs several times).
  • Vince hears a noise while guarding the cuffed Gabe. He goes to investigate in his wheelchair when all sorts of fluorescent light fixtures fall and dangle from the ceiling, with electrical lines hitting the floor. Just then, a large water pipe breaks, thus flooding and electrifying the floor. Vince pulls himself up to a pipe to avoid being electrocuted, while he reluctantly tosses his handgun to Gabe who shoots off his handcuffs and must then avoid walking on the floor (he shoots hand and foot holes in the wall so that he can traverse the room, including hanging and crawling from some pipes) to get to the junction box to shut off the power (at one point he slips and nearly falls into the rising water). As he makes his way, Vince starts to lose his grip, with Gabe killing the power just as Vince drops into the water.
  • Everyone holds guns on Sara when they think she's the suspect.
  • Nicole holds her gun on others.
  • When a person smokes, acid in the cigarette drips onto their shoe, but then also causes their finger and lips to bleed. We then see growing bloody wounds on their face and finally blood that's soaked through their shirt (that person dies from such wounds).
  • Off his wheelchair to enter a morgue, Vince then sees the morgue door closing, effectively trapping him inside.
  • Three survivors make their way through the mock city street, shooting the various targets and mannequins as they pop up or otherwise move.
  • The possible suspect slowly makes his way through a training bus (where various mannequins are in the seats), looking for a woman he thinks is on board.
  • The killer grabs a woman and has his arm around her neck. He then dunks her head under some water, repeatedly trying to drown her. After she goes limp, she then kicks him into the water and then dives in to retrieve a dead agent's gun. Both end up shooting at each other underwater (with the bullets quickly slowing down in the water), with both then holding their breath while holding their guns above the surface to shoot the first person to come up for air.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Handguns/Knives/Explosives: Carried and/or used to threaten, wound or kill others and/or cause property damage. See "Violence" for details.
  • The group raids the base's arsenal, arming themselves with various weapons.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "I'm f*cking starving," "You're seriously f*cked up," "Eenie, meenie, miny mo, Who's the next m*therf*cker to go?" "Let it all f*cking go," "It's a f*cking number," "F*ck you," "Is it my f*cking time," "Who f*cking wants it?" "F*cking brutal," "This is a f*cking trap," "What the f*ck?" • SEX/NUDITY
  • One of the agents tries to profile people in a bar, with one guy commenting on a man, stating that he's probably looking for a "blonde with great big..." but stops when he sees another man arrive and kiss the first man.
  • When Gabe says that Nicole isn't his type, she smugly replies that since they (and the other agents) are alone on an island, "Trust me, I'm your type." In response and profiling everyone in the group, Gabe says he knows that Nicole is sleeping with one of the guys in the room.
  • Lucas states that he lost both of his parents when he was 10. He then adds that he took up smoking, drinking and sleeping with any girl he could find. He jokes that he then turned 11.
  • We see a full rear nude shot of J.D. in the shower. We're lead to believe that the suspect is nearing him, but it turns out to be Nicole who puts her hand over his mouth and the two then passionately make out in the shower, nude (mostly head and shoulders shots, but we see very brief glimpses of parts of her bare breasts). We then see a shot of a man rhythmically moving up and down, but then realize that we're seeing a different scene where a different man is doing pushups (the scene was cut to make it look like sexual movement).

  • The killer admits that he killed his parents and that no one suspected him of doing so since he was just a kid.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Real life FBI profilers.
  • One of the agents tries to profile people in a bar, with one guy commenting on a man, stating that he's probably looking for a "blonde with great big..." but stops when he sees another man arrive and kiss the first man.
  • In a fake town set up for practice, we see many mannequins and other such figures with many bullet holes in them from previous training.
  • The Croatoan legend (the Lost Colony bit) described in the film.
  • We hear that Sara's kid sister was drowned and raped in the past.
  • The killer admits that he killed his parents and that no one suspected him of doing so since he was just a kid.
  • The killer states that killing is like any first high in that it's hard to get to that same place again.
  • Some viewers might not like a man telling a woman that it's a good thing she hits like a girl (referring to when she clocked him on the head with a fire extinguisher, but didn't kill him).
  • VIOLENCE
  • J.D. and Sara discover a large house in the woods at night and enter with their guns drawn. J.D. then realizes something isn't right, but just then a person enters the room, stabs Sara in the chest with a knife and then holds her as J.D. fires shots at him as the suspect fires back while holding Sara and her gun. He then pushes a table into her (causing her to drop her gun), and repeatedly slams her head to the table before striking her again. Another man then comes upon the scene and holds a billiards cue stick around the first. The two then fight, with both delivering various severe and brutal blows to the other (including using objects, such as a fire extinguisher and one trying to slice the other with a large kitchen knife before throwing it at him (no impact).
