QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: Hoping to thwart his gold-digging wife's bid to get his money, a wealthy executive stages his own kidnapping, unaware that she and others are separately planning to kidnap him as well.
PLOT:
Malcolm King (ANTHONY ANDERSON) is a successful if not entirely liked Chicago businessman whose company is celebrating its 10th anniversary with news that he might be selling it for a tidy, multi-million dollar profit. That's good news for his estranged, gold-digging wife, Renee (KELLITA SMITH), who can't wait to get her hands on even more of his money. It doesn't look good for Malcolm, but when he hears news about a local kidnapping case, he gets the idea to stage his own kidnapping, and have his estate pay a $10 million ransom that his wife won't be able to get her hands on.

Accordingly, he gets his subordinate and current lover, the ditzy Peaches (REGINA HALL), to have her recently paroled, ex-con brother Herb (CHARLES Q. MURPHY) nab him and thus start the ruse. Unfortunately for Malcolm, Herb mistakenly believes that valet Andre (DONALD FAISON) -- who's recently been posing as the businessman to score with the ladies -- is his target and thus seizes the wrong person.

Unbeknownst to them, others have had similar kidnapping thoughts. They include one of King's executives, Angela (NICOLE PARKER), who quit after he promoted Peaches into the job she wanted and has now convinced her friends Kim (LEILA ARCIERI) and Brooke (BROOKE D'ORSAY) to help her kidnap her former boss and thus get revenge on him.

Then there's Corey (JAY MOHR) who lives with his grandmother and has just been fired from his job serving as a costumed restaurant mascot. Needing $10,000 to appease his recently escaped convict sister, Corey gets the idea to get the money from kidnapping Malcolm and he eventually ends up with him, hiding him away in his basement. From that point on, the various would-be criminals try to lay their claim to Malcolm who thinks they're all in on the ruse, all while his personal assistant, Miss Gladys (LORETTA DEVINE), hounds the police to find him and nab the kidnappers.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of someone in the cast, they might want to, but this doesn't otherwise seem too highly enticing for most other kids.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For crude and sexual humor and language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • ANTHONY ANDERSON plays a wealthy and successful businessman who is demeaning to others, unless it's subordinate Peaches who he gives a promotion so that he can sleep with her. Not wanting Renee to get his money in a divorce, he plots to stage his own kidnapping, unaware that it's others who've actually done the deed. He uses profanity and briefly fights with Corey.
  • JAY MOHR plays a restaurant mascot who decides to kidnap Malcolm after being fired from his job. Poor and a bit slow, he doesn't know what he's doing but eventually decides to get revenge on those he doesn't like and goes on a violent streak where he beats up various people.
  • REGINA HALL plays the flighty, sexpot worker who Malcolm promotes rather than Angela, mainly so that he can bed her. She also has some sort of sexual relations with Andre (while blindfolded and believing him to be Malcolm).
  • KELLITA SMITH plays Malcolm's gold-digger wife who wants to get her hands on his money in a divorce settlement despite having affairs with others. She tries to have him kidnapped.
  • NICOLE PARKER plays one of Malcolm's employees who's so upset that Peaches got her promotion that she quits and then plots to kidnap Malcolm to get a hefty ransom. She also lies about her educational experience.
  • DONALD FAISON plays the valet who impersonates Malcolm in hopes of scoring with the ladies (including Peaches with whom he has some sort of sexual relations off camera) and then finds himself kidnapped by Herb.
  • LORETTA DEVINE plays Malcolm's faithful assistant who despises Renee and goes out of her way to hound the police to make them search for her boss and his kidnappers.
  • LEILA ARCIERI plays Angela's born-again friend who sports a lot of cleavage and goes along with her in their kidnapping scheme.
  • BROOKE D'ORSAY is their other friend who also participates in the attempted kidnapping.
  • CHARLES Q. MURPHY plays Peaches' recently paroled ex-con who mistakenly kidnaps Andre (thinking he's Malcolm) and then has prison-based, homosexual feelings toward him.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

    OUR TAKE: Coming Soon
Not screened for critics until the night before it opened (which is never a good sign), this is a quickly paced and slightly complex but otherwise poorly executed rip-off of the far superior and far funnier "Ruthless People." Our full review is coming soon.
    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this comedy that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of at least 1 "f" word, while other expletives and plenty of colorful phrases are uttered. Sexually related dialogue, innuendo and some song lyrics are present, sexual humor occurs (including a visual reference to oral sex that turns out to be something different, along with various gay prisoner bits), sex or sexual fooling around occurs just off camera, and various women are seen in tight and/or revealing attire (including showing a lot of cleavage).

Various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes (including having affairs), while some drink and/or smoke. A married couple doesn't get along and is headed for divorce (played for laughs), while some crude humor is present, as are various forms of potentially imitative behavior. Some comedy-style fighting, striking of others and threatening with guns occurs in several scenes, including that related to a kidnapping.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there's some of that at a large party.

  • Whenever we see Corey's grandmother, she's holding a bottle of booze (often while asleep).

  • We see Peaches blowing bubbles in her drink.

  • When Malcolm sees the poorly constructed birdhouse Corey has made, Malcolm wonders if he was drunk and blindfolded when he made it.

  • BLOOD/GORE
  • We hear a fart from Corey's sleeping grandmother.

  • Malcolm has some blood from his nose, down his chin and on his shirt.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Notwithstanding the first entry, all of the following is played for comedy.
  • There's talk of a 10-year-old boy having been kidnapped and some viewers might not like such material appearing in a comedy and inspiring the comical actions of would-be kidnappers (although they plot to kidnap an unlikable adult).
  • Miss Gladys refers to Renee as a "bitch."
  • Andre lies about being Malcolm (in hopes of scoring with Peaches and other young, attractive women).
  • Raven, who's just broken out of prison, tells Corey (her brother) that he better get her $10,000 or she's going to frame him. In turn, he then kidnaps Malcolm to get that. Later, he goes on a rampage and beats up some people.
  • Renee is portrayed as a gold-digger who just wants Malcolm's money. We also see that she's having an affair with her pool man and she plots to kidnap Malcolm to get her hands on his money.
  • Malcolm doesn't treat others nicely, is conceited in his wealth, promotes Peaches over Angela so that he can have sex with her and plots his own kidnapping to get out of paying alimony to his wife.
  • Some passing hecklers make fun of Corey in his restaurant mascot costume.
  • Upset that Malcolm promoted Peaches into a high level job rather than her (after she's already been doing the job), Angela quits and says she has a "kiss my ass sandwich" for him. She then crawls up onto a table in front of others in her tight skirt, sticks her butt out in Malcolm's direction and comments on "your crusty lips and my black ass."
  • After an outburst by Angela (over not getting a promotion that went to Peaches), Malcolm says (about Angela), "Somebody must be on the rag today" (with Peaches thinking he's talking about her).

  • Kim, a born again Christian, states that the Lord will take care of them (regarding their botched kidnapping attempt). Angela then sarcastically states that when they're being passed around C-block for cigarettes, "It was the Lord who put us there." (Some viewers might not like that comment)
  • To avoid having the police hear her previous kidnapping ploy, Renee lies to them about what she, Malcolm and Corey were up to.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence" could be unsettling to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material, but all of it's played for comedy.

  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.

  • Kim shows a lot of cleavage in various scenes and has a large tattoo on the top of her left breast.
  • As Malcolm has his back to the camera while seated in his office chair, we see Peaches pop up from his crotch area and then disappear back there. The visual joke is that she's performing oral sex on him, but we then see that she's just massaging his bare feet (with him making sexual, ecstasy type sounds).
  • Renee tells Malcolm, "Just like sex with you after two minutes, this conversation is over."
  • Renee, sporting some cleavage, likes the looks of the shirtless pool man. When she talks to him, he says he has work to do, but she replies she wasn't talking about the pool (while placing one foot up on an elevated surface so that the camera is shooting his expression through her legs).
  • Commenting on a greeting card he earlier sent Renee, Malcolm states that he was drunk when he wrote the message inside and that she was buck naked on the floor.
  • Talking about another client who had an affair, Renee's lawyer says, "I sure hope the sex was worth it" (with Renee's worried expression showing she's had one or more as well).
  • Peaches, who shows more cleavage, purposefully drops her car keys in front of Andre and then provocatively bends over in her tight dress so that her rear end is facing him. She then states that she hopes he "could wax this real good," with him replying, "Whatever you're into, baby" and her then saying, "I'll definitely make it worth your while."
  • Renee shows lots of cleavage in some lingerie that's open over her chest and shows part of her bra. She then puts her foot (in high heels) on the pool man's body.

He then suggestively puts a grape into his own mouth when he says, "If you weren't Peaches' boyfriend..."
  • Andre comments on Peaches being the one with "the round..." (butt) that he compares to an apple with its two parts.
  • After getting a call from Peaches, Andre jumps on a bed (clothed) and starts humping it in an exaggerated and excited fashion.

We then hear some muted sexual sounds and her asking, "Where did that come from?" She then comes out, looking a bit disheveled and tells her brother, "Malcolm never did that before." After she leaves, Andre comes out and enthusiastically dances around in a robe, shaking his butt while doing so, drawing Herb's attraction (and Andre then rushes back into his bedroom after telling Herb that Peaches is a "freak," meaning sexually).

  • Renee and Malcolm state that they can see why Corey is still a virgin. He claims he isn't, adding "not entirely," but Malcolm says you either are or aren't. He then asks Corey if he's ever touched what sounded like "a cat" (presumably slang for another slang term for female genitals).
  • Corey confronts a female pawnbroker who earlier took advantage of him selling his power tools. He then says that he forget "to show you my tool," she asks if it's a nice one and he replies, "You tell me." • Herb talks of Cuban cigars with Andre.
  • Renee states that it's time for a smoke, but doesn't.

  • Malcolm and Renee get back together, but in the "whatever happened to" credits at the end, it's stated that they divorced six months later.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT

  • Angela and her friends, wearing masks, hold guns on Malcolm and Renee's pool man, locking the latter in a car trunk and hoping to kidnap the former.
  • Corey throws tack-like pieces out onto the road to flatten a van's tires (and send it spinning around before coming to a stop). He later fires his nail gun into another tire, flattening it.

  • We hear the sounds of car accidents around Peaches as she drives and talks on her phone.
  • Malcolm pushes Corey and tries to escape, with Corey firing several shots from his nail gun at Malcolm (they land in a nearby wall). He then runs into Malcolm against that wall, but Malcolm gets by him and runs up the stairs where he encounters Renee. Corey then grabs the runner on the steps and yanks it back, sending Malcolm and Renee tumbling down the steps (they later awaken to find themselves tied together in chairs).
  • Corey kicks and breaks his TV in anger. He then smacks Malcolm and threatens him with a hammer.
