QUICK TAKE:
Dramedy: A high school physics whiz finds her priorities rearranged and relationship with her mother strained when her latest project studying ice skaters gets her obsessed with competing in the sport.
PLOT:
Casey Carlyle (MICHELLE TRACHTENBERG) has always been good in school and appears headed for Harvard, much to the satisfaction of her single, professor mom Joan Carlyle (JOAN CUSACK). Physics seems to be Casey's calling, and she gets an idea for her big project while watching an ice skating competition one night on TV. Since the skaters' jumps obviously follow the various rules of the science, she'll study and report on them. When her teacher tells her that her work needs a personal angle, however, she decides to take lessons.

While real skaters such as Gen Hardwood (HAYDEN PANETTIERE) and her friends Nikki (KIRSTEN OLSON) and Tiffany (JOCELYN LAI) initially look down on Casey, the bookworm ends up practicing -- with kids in a much younger age bracket -- under the tutelage of former competitive skater Tina Harwood (KIM CATTRALL), Gen's demanding mom.

While doing so, she not only finds herself attracted to the rink's Zamboni driver and Tina's other child, Teddy (TREVOR BLUMAS), but also to the sport itself. With the months passing and the deadline for deciding upon Harvard quickly approaching, Casey tries to figure out what she wants in life, all while hiding her newfound pleasure of and competitive involvement in the sport from her disapproving mom.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Female tweens and younger may want to, as might fans of someone in the cast, but it doesn't seem likely that many other kids will want to .
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: G
For not containing material to warrant a higher rating.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • MICHELLE TRACHTENBERG plays a high school student who must decide between pursuing her long-standing academic goal or her newfound love of competitive ice skating. She ends up burning the candle at both ends while initially lying to her mom about her involvement in the sport.
  • JOAN CUSACK plays her feminist mom, a professor who can't believe Casey would jeopardize her academic future for something as silly or inconsequential as she believes ice skating to be.
  • KIM CATTRALL plays Casey's demanding and no-nonsense coach who helps and then undermines her so at to allow her own daughter to succeed (and whom she pushes quite hard). She eventually decides to help Casey again try to reach her goal.
  • HAYDEN PANETTIERE plays Tina's daughter who hates her mom's pressure on her to succeed and the rigid training schedule that allows for no free or fun time.
  • TREVOR BLUMAS plays her brother, a rink worker who drives the Zamboni and finds himself falling for Casey.
  • KIRSTEN OLSON plays another skater training under Tina who's obsessed with winning.
  • JOCELYN LAI plays another skater who's like Gen and hates all of the pressure put on her to succeed.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this G rated drama. No "standard" profanity is present, but a religious and various colorful phrases are. Some slightly sexually related dialogue is present (girls commenting on another being "hot" and a guy possibly dropping some innuendo), some brief kissing occurs, and a visual joke is made about a skater with Styrofoam cushioning in her pants making her butt look big. Some skaters are seen in standard-issue short skirts that fly up during competition and show views of their covered butts and crotches (just as occurs on televised staking events) while some cleavage is present.

Various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes, including a coach who undermines her athlete's chance of winning so that her own daughter might (and that results in a bloody blister on the loser's foot). Some tension exists between parents and their kids, especially when the former pushes the latter too hard to succeed. Finally, some potentially imitative behavior is present, including using a zip line inside a house.

Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Various students are seen drinking out of plastic cups at a party, but there's nothing to indicate that there's any alcohol involved (but there's also nothing to indicate there isn't).
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Casey has a bad-looking and bloody blister/raw spot on her foot (briefly seen through a hole in her sock) from wearing new skates.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Gen gives Casey an invite to a party, but then tells her it's for Casey to give to someone else.
  • A father of one of the skaters sternly tells Casey not to talk to or distract his daughter during practice.
  • Some young skaters are quite demanding of Casey who serves them at a grill, and even look down at her.
  • A parent is too demanding of their skater child.
  • Joan looks down on skating and skaters as being beneath her and Casey. She then doesn't approve of Casey's growing involvement in the sport, and makes a comment about past professionals who are now "has-beens on ice."
  • Until Joan learns on her own about Casey's involvement in skating, Casey keeps that secret from her mom, including telling a white lie about being with a friend while she was really skating (and her mom calls her on that).
  • Gen, Nikki and Tiffany all somewhat look down on Casey, at least initially.
  • Gen takes Casey to a high school party after saying that they were going to a movie.
  • A hunky guy instantly becomes disinterested in Casey when she starts talking about physics (thus showing she's smart) at a party. As he walks away, he states, "I have to live."
  • Nikki's father sternly points out to her that he's working two jobs to finance her skating.
  • A competitor refers to the diminutive Nikki (who's known as the jumping shrimp) as "the leaping dwarf" and "shorty."
  • A skating competitor is disrespectful of Tina's skaters.
  • Tina buys Casey some new ice skates during a competition, but what looks like an act of generosity is really sabotage as Casey doesn't have any time to break in the skates that rub her feet raw and prevent her from skating as good as she might have.
  • Casey casts blame on Gen and Teddy as well after their mom sabotages her chances in a competition (the kids had nothing to do with it).
  • Tina has the philosophy that one has to do whatever it takes to win.
  • A competitive skater tries to intimidate Casey before a competition.
  • Despite winning (just barely), Nikki acts like a spoiled brat about that.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • None.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • None.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "I grind, you glide," "Geek," "We could use a kick in the butt," "(Would you) shut up?" "Could you try not to squish me?" "Are you out of your mind?" "Physics rocks," "I went a little nuts," "Are you insane?" "What's with you people?" "Dork," "Can you just give it a rest?" "Has-beens on ice," "Tre harsh," "Never, freak," "The jumping shrimp," "The leaping dwarf," "Beat it," "She's got eyes in the back of her horns," "You're hot," "(I'm not an) idiot," "Shorty," "Shut up, pincushion," "Are you crazy?" and "She's gonna whip my butt."
  • Casey's physics teacher makes some toast by holding a piece of bread over an open flame in the classroom.
  • Casey's female friend tells Casey that she looks "kind of hot" skating. Later, and after Gen applies some makeup to Casey's face, she tells her, "You're hot."
  • A high school student flies down a zip line set up inside a home and crashes through the window (but appears to be okay).
  • A girl throws a paper airplane at Casey's head to make her wake up in class.
  • A skating competitor has a pierced nostril.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • None.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • None.
  • PROFANITY
  • 1 use of "Oh my God."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • Gen briefly kisses her boyfriend, Brian, but her mom gets after her about that (not so much the kissing, but for not focusing on her skating).
  • A visual joke shows Casey with a large Styrofoam pad in the seat of her skating pants, making it look like she's has a huge butt (which the camera focuses on). After she falls and tears a hole in the seat of her pants and some of that Styrofoam is visible, Teddy stares at that part of her body.
  • Casey's female friend tells Casey that she looks "kind of hot" skating. Later, and after Gen applies some makeup to Casey's face, she tells her, "You're hot."
  • Gen shows a bit of cleavage and wears a rather short skirt to school.
  • Gen briefly kisses her boyfriend at a party.
  • The various female skaters wear standard short skirts (with stockings), but as they perform, various views of their leotard-covered butts and crotch areas are seen (just like on TV in any skating competition).
  • Casey tells Teddy that she's been trying to find a way to apologize to him (for accusing him of something he didn't do), with him slyly replying that he has some ideas about that (possibly meant in a sexual context, but that could be reading more into it than is there).
  • Michelle Kwan, present as a TV announcer, shows some cleavage.
  • Casey shows a bit of cleavage in her skating outfit.
  • SMOKING
  • None.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • A parent is too demanding of their skater child.
  • Tina is very demanding of Gen when it comes to her skating and that leads to some tension between them.
  • Tiffany states that her mom is divorced.
  • No mention is made of Casey's or Gen's absent fathers.
  • Gen quits and tells her mom that she (the mom) didn't know what she wanted because she (the mom) never cared.
  • There's tension between Casey and her mom after the teen turns down going to Harvard so that she can pursue skating. At one point, Casey states that she and her mom have barely spoken in two months. Eventually, however, Joan shows up to watch her daughter compete and sheds a tear of happiness while doing so.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Parental pressure on kids to succeed in what they and/or the parents want for them/themselves.
  • The notion of perseverance vs. that of passion in pursuing one's goal/dream.
  • Giving up one's education to pursue their dream of being a professional athlete.
  • Feminism.
  • Joan wants what's best for Casey, but is a bit too headstrong in doing so.
  • The fact that Gen and Tiffany hate being skaters and the fact that they don't have any lives outside of that.
  • A hunky guy instantly becomes disinterested in Casey when she starts talking about physics (thus showing she's smart) at a party. As he walks away, he states, "I have to live."
  • The comment that an object is only as strong as its weakest point.
  • Joan tells Casey that she feels she hasn't been able to give her daughter everything she wanted, including a certain sort of lifestyle and home.
  • Nikki's father points out to her that he's working two jobs to finance her skating.
  • Tina has the philosophy that one has to do whatever it takes to win.
  • Casey goes back to Tina to ask her to be her coach (after the latter purposefully sabotaged her earlier).
  • VIOLENCE
  • Casey accidentally ice skates into the bumper wall and falls, and then falls again on the ice (but is okay).
  • A high school student flies down a zip line set up inside a home and crashes through the window (but appears to be okay).
  • Gen purposefully bumps into a mean competitor (in passing and not during competition).
