QUICK TAKE:
Horror: A group of friends tries to survive becoming permanent members of a small town dominated by a house of wax attraction and the madman who's responsible for it.
PLOT:
A group of friends are on their way to a big football game, but decide to camp for the night on their way. In one vehicle, there's Blake (ROBERT RI'CHARD) who's must enthused about the game, as well as his girlfriend Paige (PARIS HILTON). Her best friend Carly (ELISHA CUTHBERT) and her boyfriend Wade (JARED PADALECKI) are following them in another car, along with Carly's brother Nick (CHAD MICHAEL MURRAY) -- who's a bad boy always in trouble in one way or another -- and his friend Dalton (JON ABRAHAMS).

After a tense encounter with an unseen stranger in a truck, the group wakes up late the next day. They then not only discover that Wade's fan belt is busted, but also that a local man dumps road kill nearby, resulting in a foul-smelling swamp of rot and decay. He offers to give Wade and Carly a lift into town to get a replacement belt, but he creeps them out enough that they eventually get out and walk the rest of the way into the small town of Ambrose.

There, they walk into and interrupt a funeral, but one of the attendees, Bo (BRIAN VAN HOLT), turns out to run the local auto shop and offers to help them when the service is done. To kill time, Wade and Carly enter Trudy's House of Wax, an old attraction filled with wax figurines and a curious figure in the basement, Vincent (BRIAN VAN HOLT), who they don't see. As night falls, Bo invites them back to his house to get that fan belt.

From that point on, and as the rest of their group decides to turn back when they encounter a bad traffic jam, Wade, Carly and the others realize that something strange and potentially dangerous is at hand in the small town and do their best to survive becoming a permanent part of it.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated horror film. Profanity consists of at least 6 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are uttered. Some sexually related dialogue and song lyrics are present, a woman does a striptease for her boyfriend (down to skimpy undergarments), earlier appears to be performing oral sex on him while he drives (although she denies that) and thinks she's pregnant. A bare breast is seen on a wax figurine, and some couples are seen making out.

Violence consists of all sorts of horror-based, gruesome and sadistic murders and wounding of others by various means. All sorts of related fighting and threatening of others occurs, and those scenes, other moments of potential peril (in a "haunted house" type fashion) and various jump scenes may be unsettling, suspenseful and/or scary for viewers, particularly those with low tolerance levels for such mayhem. Much of that violence has extremely gory and bloody results, while other such material is also present in other scenes. Some of the material (such as gluing a person's lips shut) might be enticing for some kids to imitate.

The killers have bad attitudes, as do some of the potential victims, while some characters drink and/or smoke. If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, some spin around camera shots might induce such a reaction in some viewers.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Wade says he's late because there were two drunken rednecks wrestling in the bathroom.
  • Nick and Dalton each walk out carrying a bottle of beer.
  • Many in the group have beer while camping.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Some tape (used to restrain a boy) cuts into his wrist (with some slightly bloody marks).
  • The group reacts to a bad smell from the woods. Paige and Carly later smell the same and go to investigate. Carly ends up suddenly falling down an embankment and landing hands first in a mucky swamp filled with various dead and rotting animals. Some of them are bloody and she has blood and muck on her hands when she pulls them out. She and others then see what looks like a human hand sticking up from the muck, but it turns out to be from a mannequin.
  • We see Carly standing up from squatting in the woods and pulling up her jeans (but we don't see or hear her urinating).
  • A local man picks his nose and then wipes that on his jacket.
  • We see Nick and Dalton standing side by side with their backs to the camera, urinating (we hear but don't see that). Blake then walks up and jokingly asks, "You two gonna have sex?"
  • Wade discovers animal embryos floating in jars and other display items (and even shakes up one).
  • Blood squirts out when a figure cuts the back of a man's ankle with some scissors. The victim then has blood on his arm and clothes after being slashed several times.
  • Some bad slash wounds are crudely stitched up.
  • An arm is broken off a wax figure (really a dead person covered in wax) and the break looks gross and gory.
  • We see a dead wax-covered body in an open casket.
  • We see what look like maggots in a town store.
  • Carly tries to get her brother's attention by sticking her finger up through a street grate, but the killer spots this and tries to snip it off several times before finally succeeding. He collects the fingertip and we then see a great deal of blood coming from the finger and then on her arm (seen several times).
  • Carly rips open her glued-shut lips, bloodying them in the process.
  • A person goes into the house of wax where they discover a still-alive friend encased in wax (we see the eyes darting about). The person then starts ripping away the wax, only to discover that it's replaced the person's skin, thus leaving a bloody and meaty surface below the new opening. The killer then swipes at the friend with something sharp but gets more of the victim's face, and thus we see a bigger part of his bloody and meaty face (along with fully exposed teeth, etc.).
  • The killer stabs two knives down into a man (we don't see the impact). We then see the killer dragging the body away, with the head falling off (with bloody results from that, as well as a trail of blood on the floor).
  • We see a dead person with a knife through their throat (with bloody results).
  • We see some blood come out when the back of a person's foot or ankle is sliced with a blade.
  • The killer throws a pole that impales a woman's head (all of the way through it, with very bloody results on her head, the pole and some of the ground around her as she's propped up on the pole). The killer then yanks the pole out with more bloody results and related squishy sounds.
  • A man's hand is very bloody (as is some of his clothing) and we see that he still has two arrows in him. He slowly (and painfully) pulls out one from his arm (with more blood) and then tries to remove the one from his chest, but the pain makes him vomit (seen). He then just cuts off the end of the arrow, leaving the rest in his chest.
  • A man discovers a friend in a waxing apparatus, but when he tries to remove the contraption on his head, the head comes off (mostly heard, but partially seen, but with no blood as the person is already dead from an earlier decapitation).
  • More fighting occurs, with a man punching a killer who then stabs a small knife into the man's leg. The woman then hits the killer with a bat and then proceeds to pummel his face with it (resulting in a bloody mess).
  • Various wax figures (dead people covered in wax) start to melt, slowly revealing the corpses beneath the wax (partially and briefly seen).
  • We briefly see a disfigured face on the killer.
  • A survivor has some bloody scrapes on him.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • The kidnappers/killers obviously have extreme bad attitudes.
  • We see footage from 1974 where a father brings an unruly (and struggling and screaming) child into the kitchen and then straps and tapes him into a high chair (no faces are seen). The mother yells at that boy, "Why can't you be more like your brother?" Some of that tape then cuts into the boy's wrist (with some slightly bloody marks) and one of the parents then slaps him across the face.
  • One of the guys kicks at a homeless man/beggar's outreached hand when passing by him.
  • We hear that Nick stole a car, was kicked off the football team and was kicked out of home by his parents.
  • Wade says that after Dalton has been given a makeover that he looks like Elton John, "only more gay."
  • As he gives a ride to Carly and Wade, a creepy local man leers at her bust in her tight tank-top and then looks down to her tight jeans.
  • Wade holds his lighter to a small wax figurine in the house of wax, slightly damaging it.
  • Wade noses around Bo's house without permission.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence," "Blood/Gore" and "Jump Scenes" may be unsettling, suspenseful or scary to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material.
  • A pickup truck shows up at the group's impromptu campground at night and won't turn off its bright headlights when the group asks and then demands that the driver do so. In turn, Nick throws a beer bottle at the truck, breaking one of the lights. The unseen driver then slowly backs away.
  • We see video camera POV footage moving through the group's impromptu campground at night. Carly gets spooked and goes out to look around by herself (and cautiously does so), as we see more POV footage looking at her. She turns and then runs into someone, but it's Wade.
  • While slowly making their way through the woods, Carly suddenly disappears (into what seems a hole, but she's walked off the edge of an embankment). She lands hands first in a mucky swamp filled with various dead and rotting animals. Some of them are bloody and she has blood and muck on her hands when she pulls them out. She and others then see what looks like a human hand sticking up from the muck, but it turns out to be from a mannequin. A local man then arrives and tosses a dead deer from his truck into that muck.
  • A creepy local man pulls out his large hunting knife and shows it to Carly, stating that it will cut through anything. She and Wade then demand that he let them out of his truck. He's upset by that and carries the knife around the truck to their door, but when he opens it, the knife is pocketed.
  • Carly runs into a figurine that sports a badly disfigured face.
  • As Carly waits in the truck outside as night falls, Wade follows Bo into his messy house to use the bathroom. Instead, however, Wade starts nosing around where he's not supposed to. After a while, Carly gets worried and gets out of the truck, only to discover that it's the same one that earlier terrorized them. She blows its horn to get Wade's attention, but the power goes out right then, leaving him in the darkness.
  • As a person finds themselves trapped in a locked room, a trap door in the floor opens and scissor-wielding figure slowly comes out and slices the back of the man's ankle (sending blood squirting out). The man then panics and lashes out in the dark room, with the figure then repeatedly slicing at him with the open scissors, bloodying him some more before kicking him in the face (we see the victim's POV of the latter act).
  • Carly locks herself inside a suspect's truck when he approaches. He then busts the glass on the driver's side door and reaches in, grabbing her. She kicks him away and then ends up on the floor, where she starts the truck and drives off with the man dangling in the window before falling off. She then tries to drive off, but gets stuck and has to flee the truck.
  • We see an unconscious body being dragged through a basement. We then see a needle being inserted into the skin (injecting a paralyzing agent), the clothes being cut off, the skin washed and the bad slash wounds crudely stitched up. Wax is then applied to all facial hair and then yanked off before hot wax is sprayed all over the victim's body (with a metal apparatus featuring many sharp sprayers that initially seem might be impaled into the man's head, but aren't).
  • Carly discovers that all of the people in the town are just wax figures.
  • We see a dead wax-covered body in an open casket.
  • The killer slowly looks for Carly in a dark church where she's hiding.
  • The killer suddenly grabs Carly's face and then chases her through town before tackling her (and having his forearm across her throat). We then see him carrying her into a basement where he plops her down hard into a chair into which he then restrains her. He then holds something sharp to her neck to keep her quiet before applying fast-drying glue to her lips that are now glued shut.
  • The killer slices at a man who escapes and then throws plates at the killer, but that does no good. The man then ends up tumbling down some stairs where the killer steps down on him before stabbing two knives down into him (we don't see the impact). We then see the killer dragging the body away, with the head falling off (with bloody results from that, as well as a trail of blood on the floor).
  • The killer enters a tent and struggles with a woman who then flees, only to discover a dead man on the ground with a knife through his throat. The killer then pauses long enough to push the knife in further with his foot. The woman then tries to hide, but then crosses a grate where a blade comes up through it and slices the back of her foot/ankle. More jabs follow, with the woman then running off and trying to hide in a car. She then jabs the killer's face with a pole (removing some wax from the face), but the killer then throws the pole that impales the woman's head (all of the way through it, with very bloody results on her head, the pole and some of the ground around her as she's propped up on the pole). The killer then yanks the pole out with more bloody results and related squishy sounds.
  • The killer hunts through a movie theater filled with wax figures as an old movie plays on the screen. A woman tries to hide among the figures, with the killer holding his shotgun to one head (but it's a wax figure). When he spots the woman, he fires two shots at her, but blasts two figures instead. A man then shots the killer with a crossbow, first in the arm and then in the chest.
  • A woman cautiously examines a killer who may or may not be dead on the floor.
  • Two people enter a house and look around, as we know the killer or killers are approaching.

  • Two people battle a killer, with hitting and knocking around, including the man being sliced by a knife or blade. More such fighting continues, with the killer punching the guy and the woman then bashing the killer with a bat. The killer then punches her to the floor as a raging fire continues to spread through the house (that's made of wax and is now starting to melt).
  • A killer and man fight, with the killer head-butting the man and then choking him, but the man then twists a broken arrow in the killer's chest, causing him pain.
  • More fighting occurs, with a man punching a killer who then stabs a small knife into the man's leg. The woman then hits the killer with a bat and then proceeds to pummel his face with it (resulting in a bloody mess).
  • A knife cuts through a melting wax door (and cuts through two Siamese Twin wax babies) as a killer comes after a woman and repeatedly swipes the large knife at her.
  • We briefly see a disfigured face on the killer.
  • The killer tries to stab and then push his large knife down into a man who tries to hold both away and stop that from happening. A woman then pulls a knife out of the man's leg and jabs it into the killer's chest or abdomen. The man then kicks the killer away who flies through the air and lands on the floor that collapses below him, down into a raging fire on the floor below them.
  • Two people try to claw their way through a melting wax wall to avoid a fire.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Shotgun/Crossbow/Knives/Scissors/Pole: Used to threaten, wound or kill others. See "Violence" for details.

  • A person is suddenly at a window.
  • A sudden gunshot blasts some glass near two people who then flee.
  • A person suddenly grabs a woman.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • An extreme amount of ominous and suspenseful music plays throughout the film.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • Some songs had lyrics that we couldn't fully hear or understand, thus offering the possibility of them potentially containing objectionable lyrics. That said, we did hear what sounded like one "f" word, while a song that plays during Paige's striptease for Blake contains sexually related lyrics (including such as "the way you move your body...it drives me wild" and something about "sex slave").
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 6 "f" words (1 used with "mother"), 6 "s" words, 1 slang using male genitals ("pr*ck"), 9 damns, 8 asses (5 used with "hole"), 7 hells, 1 crap, 9 uses of "Oh my God," 2 of "God" and 1 use each of "G-damn" and "Swear to God."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • Blake suggestively tells Paige that if they save an hour traveling, "We can spend more time..." (and whispers the rest into her ear). We then see the two passionately making out in his truck. Later, as they're driving along in that, we see Paige's head moving around somewhere in the vicinity of his crotch. The others (in another car) spot this and call on the phone to them, with one asking if she's "flossing" (an oral sex reference) and Carly saying, "You're so busted," but Paige says she lost her lip balm and was looking for it.
  • Paige, who shows cleavage in various scenes, tells Carly that she thinks she's pregnant.
  • Wade captures footage of Blake and Paige making out (and him narrating "Get me some of that") as well as Carly and Wade doing the same. When he gets a shot of Nick by himself, Nick jokes that he's not going to kiss Wade.
  • Carly shows some cleavage and wears some small "boy shorts."
  • We see the buff Nick without a shirt after he gives his tank-top to his sister (after hers gets dirty). As she changes (with a shirt held up to block a local man's view of her -- although we see her bare back and bra strap across it), that local smile smiles at the sight.
  • As he gives a ride to Carly and Wade, a creepy local man leers at her bust in her tight tank-top and then looks down to her tight jeans.
  • We see Vincent's hand and a hot wax paddle working around a wax figurine's bare breast, somewhat sensuously sculpting that "flesh" and the nipple protruding from it.
  • A classic style figurine sports bare breasts.
  • We see Nick and Dalton standing side by side with their backs to the camera, urinating (we hear but don't see that). Blake then walks up and jokingly asks, "You two gonna have sex?"
  • We briefly see the side of a man's bare butt as he's tied down to a chair.
  • Paige starts to do an impromptu strip tease for Blake (who removes his shirt while watching). As a song with sexually related lyrics plays (such as "the way you move your body...it drives me wild" and something about "sex slave"), she removes most of her clothing and we see her in a top that shows a lot of cleavage and some small panties (seen from the front and back, the latter of which shows much of her bare behind (although it's not a thong). They then do some nuzzling and kissing as the shot switches away from that.
  • SMOKING
  • Nick and Bo each smoke at least once, while a miscellaneous woman smokes.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • We see footage from 1974 where a father brings an unruly (and struggling and screaming) child into the kitchen and then straps and tapes him into a high chair (no faces are seen). The mother yells at that boy, "Why can't you be more like your brother?" Some of that tape then cuts into the boy's wrist (with some slightly bloody marks) and one of the parents then slaps him across the face.
  • We hear that Nick was kicked out of home by his parents.
  • We hear that a man in the past killed himself over grief of seeing his wife slowly die, thus orphaning their two young kids.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Serial killers.
  • Childhood incidents leading to future problems in adulthood.
  • Paige tells Carly that she thinks she's pregnant.
  • The comment that you can get used to anything if you're around it long enough.
