QUICK TAKE:
Romantic Comedy: While helping his clients meet and date the women of their dreams, a date doctor finds himself falling for a seemingly unattainable gossip columnist.
PLOT:
Alex "Hitch" Hitchens (WILL SMITH) is a self-proclaimed "date doctor" who believes that any man can sweep any woman off her feet as long as they have the right broom. Most of Alex's clients haven't had much luck in the dating world, but he's so good at coaching them that he's never without work, all of which comes from referrals by his satisfied customers.

His latest client is Albert Brenneman (KEVIN JAMES), a somewhat nerdy and slightly clumsy tax consultant for a corporate board that oversees the portfolio of wealthy socialite Allegra Cole (AMBER VALLETTA). Albert is smitten with her, but since she seems so far out of his league, he doesn't think he stands a chance. On the other hand, Alex is confident he can turn Albert into the sort of man attractive to Allegra and thus sets out to work his romantic, makeover magic on him.

When Albert and Allegra show up on the social scene together, that draws the attention of New York gossip columnist Sara Melas (EVA MENDES) whose boss, Max (ADAM ARKIN), wants her to get the scoop on this new relationship. A cynical workaholic, Sara doesn't have time for men -- especially after hearing the daily dating travail of her best friend Casey (JULIE ANN EMERY) -- but has found herself amused by the charms of a smooth and handsome operator who's been putting the moves on her.

Little does she realize, however, that this man -- Alex -- is the person behind her latest pending scoop. As the two start dating and Albert and Allegra's relationship grows, it's only a matter of time before the truth is revealed and everyone must deal with the ramifications of their relationships and work-related efforts.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're into romantic comedies and/or are fans of Will Smith or anyone else in the cast, they just might.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For language and some strong sexual references.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • WILL SMITH plays a "date doctor" who tries to help men win over the women they're interested in. While aiding the likes of Albert, he finds himself falling for the seemingly unattainable Sara, but becomes frustrated with the dating process that's kept him single over the years. He uses some profanity, including one instance of strong language and drinks some.
  • EVA MENDES plays a newspaper gossip columnist who doesn't have time for a boyfriend and rebukes all such advances made toward her, but finds herself unexpectedly falling for Alex. She uses some profanity, drinks some, and eventually outs Alex as well as Albert and Allegra.
  • KEVIN JAMES plays Alex's nerdy client, a corporate tax consultant who's crazy about Allegra and wants Alex to teach him how to win her over.
  • AMBER VALLETTA plays the rich socialite who's drawn Albert's attention and likes his normal ways rather than prefabricated ones introduced by Alex.
  • JULIE ANN EMERY plays Sara's best friend who doesn't have any luck with men, including one who she apparently slept with on their first date. She also drinks some.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this romantic comedy that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of at least 1 use of the "f" word, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Various instances of sexually related dialogue are present, some couples are seen making out, and sex is referred to and implied (a couple wakes up in bed together).

Various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes, while violence consists of some comedy style struggling and slapstick style material, while a woman knees a man in the crotch, and a man bends that same man's arm behind him and pins him to a table for being a jerk.

Other imitative behavior is present, while various characters drink (and one acts tipsy from drinking too much anti-inflammatory medicine -- following his face swelling up in an exaggerated fashion from a food allergy). Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.
