QUICK TAKE:
Romantic Comedy: An American hotel developer and an independent Indian woman start falling for each other after initially clashing over their cultural differences.
PLOT:
Will Darcy (MARTIN HENDERSON) is an American hotel developer who's traveled to India to research a possible acquisition. Accompanying him is Kiran Bingley (INDIRA VARMA) and her brother -- Will's best friend and English barrister -- Balraj (NAVEEN ANDREWS) who's taken them to the small town of Amritsar. He's there to meet Jaya Bakshi (NAMRATRA SHIRODKAR), one of four daughters to Mr. and Mrs. Bakshi (ANUPHAM KHER & NADIRA BABAR) who are eager to marry off their girls including Lakhi (PEEYA RAI CHODURI) and Maya (MEGHNAA KHOTARI).

Much to Mrs. Bakshi's dismay, their remaining daughter, Lalita (AISHWARYA RAI), is in no hurry despite her beauty drawing many suitors such as Mr. Kholi (NITIN GANATRA), a transplanted Indian who's fully adopted the American lifestyle living in California. Will and Lalita end up being paired together at party and initially clash, mostly because she think he's an arrogant American who looks down on her country, people and lifestyle. He tries to prove her wrong, but it's to no avail.

To keep her sister company, Lalita travels with her and the three foreigners to check out the hotel property, but she and Will still don't get along although there's an obvious attraction between the two. That's tested when vagabond Johnny Wickham (DANIEL GILLIES), one of Will's former employers and son of the Darcys' nanny, shows up and seems to sweep Lalita off her feet, although she may just be trying to make Will jealous.

With Mrs. Bakshi doing everything in her power to marry off her daughters, Lalita and Will try to overcome their differences and make a go of their budding relationship.

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a quick look at the content found in this romantic comedy that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of at least 1 "s" word, while other expletives and colorful phrases are uttered. Sexually related dialogue is present in several scenes (and a few musical numbers/songs), while women and men wear varying levels of revealing attire (partial butt cheek views of both sexes are briefly visible) and some slightly sexualized dancing occurs.

Various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes, some drink in various scenes, two men briefly fight (played in a lighthearted fashion in a movie theater showing a film featuring a similar style fight) and two women slap the same man. Some brief tense family material is present, as are thematic elements about issues such as prearranged marriages and cultural differences between people.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Mrs. Bakshi pushes too hard to marry off her daughters.
  • Lalita automatically thinks that Will is an arrogant American and thus has a bad attitude toward him.

  • Kiran is a bit of a snob toward Mrs. Bakshi and her daughters.
  • Will's mother is a bit of a snob.
  • Will's mom purposefully invites his "girlfriend" to a wedding to circumvent his growing attraction to Lalita.
  • Although we don't see any related actions, Balraj breaks off his engagement with Jaya without informing her of such and doesn't have any contact with her (until Will fixes the damage that he caused -- see below).
  • We hear that Will talked Balraj out of marrying Jaya, but later admits he did it because he thought she may have been a gold digger (based on how her mother was acting, etc.).
  • Will states that Johnny got his then 16-year-old sister pregnant in the past and wanted to marry her, but only to get his hands on the family fortune. We also see that he's after the presumably underage Lakhi.

  • A song lyric uses the term "rack" for breasts and something about a man wanting more than that.

That said, we heard the following: At least 1 "s" word, 1 possible slang term for sex ("screwed"), 2 slang terms for breasts ("rack" and what sounded like "mammies"), 3 hells, 1 damn, 1 wanker, 7 uses of "Oh my God," 2 of "Good Lord" and 1 use each of "Jesus" and "Oh God."
  • SEX/NUDITY

  • Kiran says something about the older ladies liking her brother and either watching his knickers or wetting theirs in response.
  • Some of the women do some dancing that's somewhat sexual in nature (with hips sashaying, etc.).
  • One of Jaya's sisters tells her that she should seduce Balraj that night.
  • With Lalita reluctantly accompanying her sister, Balraj, Kiran and Will to a resort, Mrs. Bakshi says that this is a chance for Will to see Lalita in a swimsuit.

  • There are various shots of various men shirtless or with their shirts open.
