QUICK TAKE:
Sci-fi: A fugitive must contend with bounty hunters as well as a race of beings that want to conquer the universe.
PLOT:
It's been five years since Riddick (VIN DIESEL), a convicted murderer, survived both crash landing on a remote planet and the repeated attacks of carnivorous monsters there. Now the only thing he runs from are bounty hunters such as Toombs (NICK CHINLUND) who try to capture him for a handsome reward. Riddick overpowers Tombs and his crew and takes their ship, returning to a planet where he hopes to find the only two people he rescued from that nightmare.

He comes across Muslim cleric Imam (KEITH DAVID) and learns that the other survivor, a young girl named "Jack," is now in prison. As informed by the mysterious ambassador Aereon (JUDI DENCH), however, he and the rest of humanity have bigger things to worry about.

It seems that a super race of beings known as the Necromongers are taking over the universe, killing off or enslaving nearly everyone. Led by Lord Marshal (COLM FEORE) and his right-hand man Vaako (KARL URBAN), the Necromongers are out to conquer this planet, and Aereon wants to hire Riddick to deal with the invaders.

He wants nothing to do with this battle and thus sets off for another planet where a subterranean prison holds Jack who now goes by the name of Kyra (ALEXA DAVALOS). As the power hungry Dame Vaako (THANDIE NEWTON) wants her husband to usurp Lord Marshal's command, Riddick must not only deal with both Vaako and Tombs being after him, but also the penal planet where the rising sun sends temperatures soaring and burns up anything in its path.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of the first film, "Pitch Black" and/or anyone in the cast, they just might.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this sci-fi film. Profanity consists of at least 1 "f" word, while other expletives and colorful phrases are uttered. Some women are seen in revealing or form-fitting attire, while some brief, sexually related dialogue is present.

Violence consists of many scenes of brutal and lethal fighting (hand to hand and various weapons used on others), as well as property destruction. Some of that fighting may be enticing for some kids to imitate and it and other moments could be tense or suspenseful to some viewers, while some of it has bloody results (several people also disintegrate in the hot sun). A few characters drink or smoke, while the hero is an anti-hero (a criminal/fugitive) and a race of beings kills or tries to convert other civilizations to their way of thinking.

Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, a great deal of full and partial strobe effects occur in many scenes, particularly early in the film.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Toombs drinks from a bottle.
  • Toombs and a prison warden drink shots.
  • We see some beer bottles rattling on a table.
  • BLOOD/GORE

  • We see some blood on Riddick's arm, then on his face and then some more on his face (including a brief shot of his bloody teeth).
  • A Necromonger purposefully walks out into the sun's fiery rays, knowing full well what they'll do to him. We then see him (from a distance) staggering and stumbling as the rays disintegrate his skin and body until he's engulfed in flames).

  • We see a little blood on a knife.
  • Kyra has a little blood from her mouth.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE

  • Riddick is a convicted murderer who initially wants nothing to do with the Necromongers.
  • A man frisks Kyra (including running his hands across her clothed butt) as others watch and laugh.

  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence" may also be unsettling, suspenseful or scary to some viewers.
  • Some large wolf-like creatures with armored plating are let loose on some prisoners (with a guard whacking one to make it get to work). Kyra has a close encounter with one and barely escapes. We then hear the sound of them attacking and presumably killing other prisoners. One then slowly approaches Riddick, but he stares it down as it growls and acts menacingly toward him.
  • Riddick, Kyra and others attempt to outrun the rising sunrise on a planet's surface that's so hot that the sun's rays will ignite anything they touch. They then climb up a sheer cliff and must then hide in the shadows to avoid the rays. As fire races toward Kyra, Riddick swings by on a rope and rescues her just in time as another person bursts in flames from the rays.
  • Kyra worries about Riddick who's been knocked unconscious and is lying in the path of the rising sunset (and its fiery rays).

  • SEX/NUDITY
  • Dame Vaako wears a very tight and formfitting outfit (the camera moves up her body to reveal it).
  • Riddick smells Dame Vaako, saying that it's been a long time since he smelled something beautiful. In response, she suggestively tells him, "Let me show you the way" (but nothing happens between them).
  • Kyra holds a knife on Riddick, but he slams her back into a gate and then appears to use his hand or leg at her clothed crotch to lift her off the ground. She then sarcastically asks, "What are you going to do, go for the sweet spot?"

  • Anti-heroes.
  • Power hungry people.
  • People who forcibly try to convert others to their way of life and thinking.
  • VIOLENCE
  • Toombs' ship fires spiked nets at Riddick as he tries to elude them. One such net hits Riddick, briefly stopping him. As the ship then slowly searches for him, Riddick comes out from behind cover and cuts open part of the ship, sending a gunner falling to his presumed death. We then hear that another has met a similar fate and then see a third falling from the ship and hitting the rocks below quite hard.
  • Riddick grabs Toombs and slams him up into the ceiling of a ship. He then jabs his knife near his leg and cuts some of the fabric heading toward his crotch. He then holds the knife to Toombs' throat before throwing him from the ship (he lands hard on one of his crewmembers down below).
  • Riddick slams his spacecraft into another (from below) to divert and then elude it.
  • Riddick holds a knife to Imam's throat.
  • Riddick holds a knife to Aereon.
  • Some Necromonger guards manhandle some people.
  • We see quick, strobe like shots of Riddick hitting, kicking and otherwise striking various Necromongers that are after him (thus we don't see what really occurs in full). During this, various laser-type blasts are fired at others, blowing them back into walls, etc. and causing property damage.
  • We see anti-aircraft type fire blasting upwards toward Necromonger ships. We then see various large-scale explosions erupting around the planet.
  • We see spacecraft battling other spacecraft (with resultant explosions, etc.).
  • Necromongers fire upon Imam and his family that's trying to hide from them.
  • Necromongers and humans get into a large-scale fight that includes shooting at the enemy and engaging in hand to hand combat. A big explosion then kills many humans.
  • More laser type blasts injure or kill many more people.

  • A Necromonger yanks out a human's soul (that we see) from his body, killing him.
  • Riddick battles a Necromonger warrior who comes at him with various large axes. Riddick then yanks a knife from his or another's back and stabs the warrior with it, killing him.
  • Something akin to ultra-gravity pulls Riddick down to the floor as probes probe his mind for information.
  • Riddick shoots one Necromonger and fires blasts at others as he escapes.
  • A ship comes after Riddick as he tries to escape on the street, but Toombs' crew fires shots at the craft, causing it to crash and explode (nearly hitting Riddick).
  • As they blast down a tunnel toward an underground prison, Riddick bumps one of his captors enough that the man hits his head on something hanging low in the tunnel, sending him careening off their cart and presumably killing him.
  • Riddick fights several men in a prison, with Kyra striking another with a chain.
  • A man kicks a prisoner (who's on all fours) in the face.
  • Kyra holds a knife on Riddick, but he slams her back into a gate and then appears to use his hand or leg at her clothed crotch to lift her off the ground. She then sarcastically asks, "What are you going to do, go for the sweet spot?"
  • Kyra pops a small blade out from her mouth and uses it to slice Riddick's face slightly (we see the mark).
  • Some large wolf-like creatures with armored plating are let loose on some prisoners (with a guard whacking one to make it get to work). Kyra has a close encounter with one and barely escapes. We then hear the sound of them attacking and presumably killing other prisoners.
  • Kyra uses a blade in her boot to kick back into a man's crotch, and then hits, kicks and stabs others, including apparently stabbing one in the neck (briefly seen). One finally hits her over the head and/or back to get control of her. Riddick then arrives on the scene, stating he can take one out with his "teacup" (a mug like object). One man then approaches Riddick who kills him with that cup (we later see it has a sharp/serrated bottom with the man's blood on it).
  • Toombs strikes a prison guard resulting in a large-scale battle between his crew and the guards (gunfire and hand to hand, where various people are hit). An explosion then goes off. Moments later, we see various dead people and property damage.
  • Riddick jumps on Toombs who's suspended on a long chain, but does so to climb up it.
  • A person bursts into flames from the sun's rays.
  • From above, Riddick swings a chain around until it strikes a guard in the face, prompting him to fire his weapon that hits another person. More weapons are fired from both sides at each other.
  • From behind, we see a man's head ignite and disintegrate from extremely hot solar rays hitting it.
  • A gun/weapon battle breaks out where blasts hit various characters and blow them backwards. During this, Riddick stabs down into one and blasts another backwards with a weapon shot. More such shooting and hand to hand combat continues, while Kyra uses her boot blade to strike many characters as an extreme amount of fighting occurs.
  • An escaped prisoner hits Vaako who then grabs the guy and breaks his back over his knee. He then fires a blast that hits another character and Riddick, blasting them back through the air (leaving Riddick unconscious).
  • Riddick grabs a Necromonger by the throat.
  • A Necromonger purposefully walks out into the sun's fiery rays, knowing full well what they'll do to him. We then see him (from a distance) staggering and stumbling as the rays disintegrate his skin and body until he's engulfed in flames).
  • Lord Marshall, who's able to zip from one spot to another instantaneously, does so and blasts a character back into a wall.
  • We see a replayed view of Riddick killing a character (from the victim's point of view as Riddick approaches and swings at him).
  • Riddick stabs two guards in the face (no blood). He then stabs a knife into Lord Marshall, wounding him. Marshall, however, then zips toward Riddick, blasting him back into a wall. He then zips and darts around Riddick, repeatedly hitting and kicking him while easily blocking Riddick's punches. He then tries to pull out Riddick's soul (that we see), but Riddick knocks him backwards. Marshall then comes at Riddick with a long pole and hits and lifts him off the floor with it.
  • Kyra stabs a Necromonger in the back, but he knocks her backwards where she's impaled on a sharp object sticking out from a surface.
  • Vaako tries to hit another Necromonger with a large ax, but the intended target gets out of the way.
  • Riddick stabs a knife down into a Necromonger's head (no blood), breaking off the handle and knocking him backwards.
