QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: Having already met his fiancé's conservative parents, a male nurse worries about the repercussions when he takes her family to meet his very liberal parents.
PLOT:
Greg Focker (BEN STILLER) is a male nurse who's hoping to set a wedding date with his pregnant girlfriend Pam Byrnes (TERI POLO). Having survived a meeting with her parents -- Jack (ROBERT DE NIRO) and Dina (BLYTHE DANNER) -- where it was revealed that her dad was not a florist but rather a retired CIA agent -- the time is now set for all of them to meet his parents.

With Jack's grandson, Little Jack (SPENCER & BRADLEY PICKREN), in tow, the foursome drives down to Florida in Jack's new RV. There, they meet Greg's father, Bernie (DUSTIN HOFFMAN), a former lawyer turned stay-at-home dad who firmly believes in touchy-feely emotional connections, and his sex therapist wife, Roz (BARBRA STREISAND).

With the sets of parents falling on the polar opposite sides of most every spectrum, the stage is set for comedic strife, especially as everyone tries to keep Pam's pregnancy secret from Jack. Things become more complicated when the former agent learns that Greg lost his virginity to his saucy, former nanny Isabel (ALANNA UBACH) and sees that her young son, Jorge (RAY SANTIAGO), bears a striking resemblance to Greg. Jack then sets out to prove he's Greg's illegitimate son in hopes that such news might make Pam change her mind about marriage.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of the first film, they probably will.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For crude and sexual humor, language and a brief drug reference.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • ROBERT DE NIRO plays a former CIA agent who's reluctantly accepted that his daughter is going to marry Greg, but isn't thrilled about meeting his parents, especially after he realizes that they're far different from him. He then sets out to prove that Jorge is Greg's illegitimate son in hopes that such news might change Pam's mind. He drinks some.
  • BEN STILLER plays a male nurse who's nervous about allowing his and Pam's parents to meet, especially considering that Pam is now pregnant. He uses some profanity and tries to keep things as sane as possible, but often ends up creating more problems than he was expecting.
  • DUSTIN HOFFMAN plays Greg's liberal, touchy-feely, stay-at-home dad who was once a lawyer and is happy to meet Pam's parents. He uses some profanity and is randy with his wife.
  • BARBRA STREISAND plays his wife, a liberal sex therapist who thinks that Jack is too uptight and hopes to improve his and Dina's sex life. She uses a bit of profanity.
  • BLYTHE DANNER plays Jack's wife who drinks some wine and wants to keep the situation in control as much as possible.
  • TERI POLO plays Greg's pregnant girlfriend who wants to keep her motherly news secret from her father during their meeting with the Fockers.
  • SPENCER & BRADLEY PICKREN play Jack's grandson who knows a baby form of sign language and is just starting to talk (with him repeating a profanity many times for comedy).
  • ALANNA UBACH plays Greg's saucy, former nanny with whom he lost his virginity many years ago.
  • RAY SANTIAGO plays her son who may or may not be Greg's illegitimate son.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this comedy that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of at least 7 "s" words (and many uses of the family name are made to sound like the "f" word), while other expletives and colorful phrases are uttered.

Sexually related dialogue (about various topics, including masturbation) is present, as is all sorts of sexually related material and behavior (including figurines, book titles and some sex therapy sessions, as well as sights of a dog humping various things, middle-aged parents fooling around, an erection reference and an engaged woman being pregnant). Various buxom women show cleavage, while some men wear a bra-like device that sports a realistic looking breast (for simulating breast feeding).

Various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes, some drink and one briefly jokes about using drugs (pot), but then says that he doesn't. Various instances of crude humor are present, while a character twice has his face slightly bloodied by accidental contact from others.

Other violence involves a cop getting physical with some characters he arrests, including zapping two with a stun-gun, and a rough, backyard football tackle. Brief footage from the movie "Scarface" shows a lot of gunfire, while a man injects a syringe (filled with truth serum) into a man's neck (no blood, but somewhat graphic in nature). Other potentially imitative behavior is also present.

Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Greg and Pam have champagne in first class.
  • Greg has a drink.
  • As a diversion, Greg asks if anyone wants a drink.
  • Bernie brings drinks for everyone, and comments that he understands Jack is a Tom Collins man. Roz then spits out her first sip back into her glass when Bernie wants to make a toast.
  • The families have wine with dinner.
  • Roz tells Greg to put a dab of rum in Little Jack's milk to make him stop crying.
  • Later, when everyone returns home to chaos, they find the rum bottle glued to Little Jack's hands (he was playing with glue and then grabbed the bottle).
  • Bernie brings champagne for Dina, Ben and himself over news of Pam's pregnancy.
  • People have drinks at a party where Jack hands Pam a wine spritzer to give to her mom and Jack has a Tom Collins. After Greg makes a scene there, Pam thinks he was drunk, but he was only reacting to the sodium pentothal that Jack injected into him.
  • There's the blessing of wine in a wedding ceremony. Later, there's a champagne toast at the reception.
  • Jack watches a surveillance tape that shows Greg caring for Little Jack. He jokingly asks the toddler if he wants some of his vodka and then states that he was smoking "a little reefer" out by the lagoon. He then tells Jack via that tape that he's just joking around to goad him and that he doesn't smoke pot.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Jack makes a baby sign language hand gesture for "pooping" and states that Little Jack will be enjoying a nice poop later. We also see a flash card drawing depicting a young kid sitting on a toilet (no nudity).
  • Little Jack accidentally head-butts Greg, bloodying his nose.
  • Greg unknowingly drinks some of a woman's pumped breast milk (some viewers might find that gross).
  • Jack's toilet-trained cat comes out of the bathroom with toilet paper stuck on his paw. Jack then informs everyone that in terms of using the bathroom, there will be no doing "number two," only "number one."
  • There's more poop-related talk by Greg to Little Jack.
  • Bernie says the following about using the bathroom, "If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down." He then looks into the toilet and sheepishly states that he didn't follow that rule as he proceeds to flush it.
  • Little Jack audibly farts.
  • Jack's cat flushes the Fockers' dog down the RV's toilet. Bernie then uses a fire extinguisher to break the toilet and retrieve the dog, sending the blue cleaning fluid inside spraying everywhere. We later see the dog whose fur is now blue (but he's otherwise okay).
  • As Jack finishes in the shower (no nudity), he opens the curtain to find Bernie sitting on the toilet with his pants around his ankles. There's some small talk and Jack is uncomfortable with this, with Bernie stating that he's almost done.
  • There's brief talk about Little Jack eating his own boogers.
  • Jack suddenly jabs a syringe filled with sodium pentothal into Greg's neck (seen rather graphically, but without any blood), to make him speak the truth.
  • While preparing to use some martial arts on Jack, Bernie accidentally kicks Greg in the face, slightly bloodying it.
  • Greg makes the baby sign language for "poop" while saying that Jack is full of it.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Jack (and the film) makes fun of Greg being a male nurse by holding up a flash card with a drawing of a female nurse for Little Jack and having the toddler laugh in relation to Greg being a man.
  • Some viewers might not like some of the characters' implied or stated ideological positions, such as Bernie calling the CIA the "central lack of intelligence" (but all of it's played for laughs).
  • Jack hides a camera to watch Greg and Little Jack.
  • Roz tells Greg to put a dab of rum in Little Jack's milk to make him stop crying.
  • Jack suddenly jabs a syringe filled with sodium pentothal into Greg's neck (seen rather graphically, but without any blood), to make him speak the truth.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • None.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • We briefly see footage from the movie "Scarface" where various weapons are fired, once with explosive results that knock down some characters.
  • A cop zaps Greg with a taser and keeps on shocking him for a while (played for our laughs) while holding his real gun on Bernie. Jack then arrives on the scene, and tries to intervene, but the cop zaps him with that taser.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: As in the first film, there are many uses of the family's last name, "Focker," that are made to sound like various uses of the "f" word (such as "What's the matter with you, Focker?" "He's a handsome little Focker," "We Fockerized him," a person's name being Dom Focker, "Focker out," "You Fockerized him" and "I'd like to Fockerize you"), "Holy sh*t," "Oh sh*t," "This is hardcore sh*t," "Honk if you're horny" (seen written), "How the hell do you shut this thing off?" "Freaks my mom out," "Shake a leg, woman" (said as a joke that Jack knows his wife will not hear), "Take a piss," "What the hell are you doing?" "That is bullcrap in a chef's salad," "Kissing his ass," "El Stifo" (not for erection), "He's gonna plotz" (or something like that), "You were riding him like Seabiscuit," "Really starting to freak me out," "Hey there, preggars," "You're acting like such a jerk," "I'm gonna have to kick your ass," "Look at this yatz" (or something like that), "Shut it," "Old timer," "Who the hell are you?" "There's my brother from another mother" and "He's a little wacko."
  • There are various bits of intended humor where Little Jack's first words (that he keeps repeating after hearing it from Greg) are "asshole."
  • Jack has Greg test the strength of his RV's windows by throwing a brick against it. However, it bounces off the RV and shatters the windshield on Greg's rental car.
  • Jack makes a gesture for "I've got my eyes on you" by pointing two fingers to his own eyes and then at another person.
  • A young female bus driver tries to get Jack to blow the horn on his RV. Greg finally gets him to do that, but we then see a sign on the passing bus that reads, "Honk if you're horny." Some young women then go to flash their breasts at Greg and Jack by lifting their shirts, but the camera cuts back just to show us the men's reaction. When the camera cuts back to the bus, we briefly see a person's bare butt as they moon the men.
  • Jack's cat flushes the Fockers' dog down the RV's toilet. Since the scene is played for laughs, some kids might think it's funny to do the same to other animals.
  • Jack hides a camera to watch Greg and Little Jack.
  • Roz tells Greg to put a dab of rum in Little Jack's milk to make him stop crying. Later, when everyone returns home to chaos, they find the rum bottle glued to Little Jack's hands (he was playing with glue and then grabbed the bottle).
  • Jack suddenly jabs a syringe filled with sodium pentothal into Greg's neck (seen rather graphically, but without any blood), to make him speak the truth.
  • While under the effects of sodium pentothal that's made him loopy, Greg gives "the finger" to Little Jack.
  • Bernie lies in front of Jack's RV to prevent him from driving away.
  • Greg makes the baby sign language for "poop" while saying that Jack is full of it.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • None.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • None.
  • PROFANITY
  • A in the first film, there are many uses of the family's last name, "Focker," that are made to sound like various uses of the "f" word. Beyond that, there are at least 7 "s" words, 1 slang term for male genitals ("winky dink"), 8 for breasts ("boobs" and "knockers"), 12 asses (10 used with "hole" and mostly said by a toddler -- for laughs on the part of the film), 3 hells, 2 craps, 8 uses of "Oh my God," 2 of "Jesus" and 1 use each of "G-damn," "God," "My God" and "Oh God."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • We see Greg in between a pregnant woman's spread legs in the hospital. He then holds up his gloved hand with his index and middle finger together and looking moist/lubricated (the joke being that they were inside the woman as part of the delivery process). There's no related nudity or blood/goo, but he later comments on pulling a life "out of a woman's..." (but doesn't finish the thought).
  • A roadside billboard shows a very buxom woman showing cleavage, and it draws the attention of Little Jack (who sees it as food).
  • Jack walks out wearing a modified bra that sports a realistic looking bare breast (that he says was modeled after Little Jack's mother's real one). He does so to prevent any separation and/or routine disruption issues. Jack is proud of this invention and wants Greg to feel it. The latter reluctantly does so and states that it feels real, but quickly adds that he wouldn't know what Debby's breast feels like. As he's touching it, Pam and Dina enter and look surprised.
  • Bernie proudly states that he conceived Greg with just one testicle, adding that the other did not drop.
  • The Fockers dog humps Dina's leg, with Bernie telling her not to worry since "the pink part didn't get on you."
  • We see various nude statues, busts and figurines in the Fockers' house that show nudity (bare breasts, butts, pubic hair and exaggerated phallic images). Some of the figurines are in man/woman sexual poses, while we see book titles such as "Hot Sex," "One hour orgasm," "The art of sexual fantasy" and "Is your vagina happy?"
  • We see some older participants in Greg's class where the old man is back behind an older woman's rear (both are fully clothed). He then lies down on a bed and does some pelvic thrusting into the air before the older woman straddles and starts to gyrate on him. Moments later, we see some more such clothed movements, with Roz telling the man to go easy on the thrusting.
  • Roz asks Greg if Pam still climaxes regularly (which makes Greg uncomfortable).
  • Roz states that at least Bernie has the libido of a teenager and he jokes that he gave her a "little matinee" that afternoon. The two then do some playful and slightly randy hugging.
  • We see Greg's old jockstrap on his parents' wall of tribute to him.
  • There's more talk about Jack's fake breast with repeated uses of the term "boob."
  • Bernie comments on squeezing lemons for Jack's drink and makes a playful breast squeezing gesture aimed at Roz.
  • Bernie states that he never had the chance to "procreate" a girl and then wants to say "one more thing about my vasectomy" but is stopped from doing so.
  • Greg jokes that the family dog "humps everything that moves," prompting Roz to joke that it's just like Bernie.
  • Pam states that she's pregnant.
  • We hear that Greg had a childhood crush on Isabel, his saucy/sexy nanny (who's there now and sports a lot of cleavage while stating that she "had the boob job"). Little Jack spots her cleavage and does all sorts of gesturing and tongue wagging (in relation to wanting to be fed). Bernie then jokes about Greg "doing a little bazinga" (while making a hand gesture, all meaning masturbating) to her passport. Bernie then states that Greg was a late bloomer in that he was 19 when he lost his virginity to Isabel. Greg is embarrassed and Pam later questions him on that by stating he said it was someone else. Bernie then wants to have everyone discuss when they first had sex, including Jack who's not comfortable with that idea, but such a discussion never occurs.
  • Roz has Dina looking through an old family album where they find Greg's circumcised foreskin (that ends up landing in a fondue pot). His parents then joke about the circumcision of his "winky dink" and that since it was cold his penis was like a turtle from its shell. They then joke that it ended up being a semi-circle circumcision, leaving his penis looking like a cross between an anteater and a German helmet.
  • Greg hears his parents loudly doing some sexual role playing from their bedroom (with talk of whipped cream being snow on her "mountains," and then Bernie saying he's there to clean Roz's "carpet"). Greg ends up in their room where he sees his dad with whipped cream all over his face and a lot in Roz's ample and quite visible cleavage.
  • Roz states that with some sex therapy for Dina and Jack, Dina could get Jack to "blow like Krakatau."
  • Talking about playing backyard football with their wives, Bernie jokes that they'll swap wives." When it's mentioned that Greg will play QB for both teams, Bernie jokes that Greg "goes both ways." During the game, Bernie does a congratulatory and clothed pelvic thrust toward Dina and playfully pats her on her clothed butt.
  • Bernie then reminds Roz of "that time in the park" (presumably sexual in nature).
  • Greg jokes that Jack still thinks that Pam is a virgin.
  • Roz knows that Pam is pregnant and wants to know how it happened (while talking just to Greg). He's uncomfortable as she talks about him being such a sexual dynamo and that women crave sperm on an unconscious level.
  • Roz finds a dress for Dina and says that it will get Jack's blood flowing. She then asks Dina, "How's your sex life?" Dina is flustered, but then admits that they only have sex on their anniversary. Roz is determined to help and shows Dina how to manipulate Jack's ears to arouse him (by doing the same to Dina's ears which arouses her).
  • We see the family dog humping a doll on the floor. Later, we see it humping the cat and Jack remarks in disgust about the dog sodomizing the cat.
  • Isabel shows some cleavage.
  • We briefly see Greg wearing Jack's modified bra with the realistic-looking fake breast (after he was apparently trying to get Little Jack to stop crying) and Roz questions whether Jack was breastfed.
  • Bernie comments on Pam's pregnancy being Greg's "fruit of your loins."
  • Roz gives Jack a massage where he lies shirtless on a massage table and she rubs his back and then runs her hands down under his belly. After doing that a few times, she says, "Oops, hit some driftwood" (an erection joke). She then tells Jack that Dina is a hot, sexy tigress who's ready for him to pounce.
  • Roz has Dina using hand sock puppets to do some sexual role playing, saying "Come here, hot stuff" and "Oh, Jack" before making some related, pleasured sounds.
  • A comment is made about relatives named Randy and Orny Focker (with the word playing being sexual in nature on the part of the film).
  • While under the effects of sodium pentothal, Greg addresses a party and says that he still masturbates to Pam. He then tells everyone to look at her "boobs" and that he wants to lather them up (he then makes an exaggerated head/mouth in the cleavage sound). He then adds that he just wants to take a vacation there. He then comments on his first passionate sexual awakening with Isabel and that they conceived a child (we later learn that the latter is not true).
  • A cop finds Jack's fake breast apparatus in his RV and comments on the "rubber booby."
  • Bernie confronts Jack and asks when he last gave Dina breakfast in bed and then asks when he last gave her anything in bed (meaning sexual).
  • Roz shows some cleavage.
  • After Roz gives Jack sexual advice about Dina, Bernie states, "You Fockerized him." He then says to her, "I'd like to Fockerize you." We then see Jack and Dina hurrying to their RV, presumably to have sex.
  • SMOKING
  • None.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • While there's nothing in the standard sense, Dina is a bit put out with Jack for the way he's behaving, while Greg is embarrassed and/or upset about the way his parents are acting.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Meeting others' parents.
  • The comment that where you come from (meaning relatives) can indicate where you're going in life.
  • Pam states that she's pregnant (before being married).
  • Bernie states that he quit being a lawyer to be a stay at home dad.
  • Sex therapy and sex therapists.
  • VIOLENCE
  • Little Jack accidentally head-butts Greg, bloodying his nose.
  • Jack has Greg test the strength of his RV's windows by throwing a brick against it. However, it bounces off the RV and shatters the windshield on Greg's rental car.
  • Jack's cat flushes the Fockers' dog down the RV's toilet. Bernie then uses a fire extinguisher to break the toilet and retrieve the dog, sending the blue cleaning fluid inside spraying everywhere. We later see the dog whose fur is now blue (but is otherwise okay).
  • Determined to stand up to Jack while playing backyard football, Bernie races toward Jack, tackling him hard and flipping him through the air and to the ground, throwing out Jack's back.
  • We briefly see footage from the movie "Scarface" where various weapons are fired, once with explosive results that knock down some characters.
  • Jack suddenly jabs a syringe filled with sodium pentothal into Greg's neck (seen rather graphically, but without any blood), to make him speak the truth.
  • Played for comedy, Bernie falls backwards over a table while dancing.
  • While under the effects of sodium pentothal, Greg passes out and falls backwards to the floor (played for laughs).
  • While preparing to use some martial arts on Jack, Bernie accidentally kicks Greg in the face, slightly bloodying it.
  • After pulling them over for speeding and Bernie getting out to discuss what's occurred, a cop pushes Bernie down hard to the trunk while cuffing him. He then twists Greg's wrist, causing him pain before likewise slamming him to the trunk. When Greg tries to run off, the cop zaps him with a taser and keeps on shocking him for a while (played for laughs) while holding his real gun on Bernie. Jack then arrives on the scene, and tries to intervene, but the cop zaps him with that taser.
