QUICK TAKE:
Sci-fi: A married investigator of the future has an affair - that may result in a violation of a genetic law -- with a woman who may be distributing forged transport documents.
PLOT:
It's sometime in the future where the privileged live in guarded cities and can only enter or leave if possessing papelles, a passport of sorts that are manufactured by companies such as Shanghai-based Sphinx run by Backland (OM PURI). It now seems that one of the company's workers has been forging papelles and investigator William Geld (TIM ROBBINS) has arrived to figure out who that might be. Utilizing the empathy virus in his system that allows him to read people via anything they might say, it doesn't take William long to zero in on Maria Gonzalez (SAMANTHA MORTON).

Despite being on the job and married with a child back in Seattle, William finds himself falling for her. Not knowing her background, their one-night stand could run the risk of violating Code 46, a law designed to prevent genetically similar people from having children.

With his papelles running out, William returns home. Yet, when he can't shake Maria from his mind and he hears that one the recipients of her forged documents has died, William returns to Shanghai under the guise of his continuing investigation. When he arrives, however, unexpected developments soon challenge his convictions, and from that point on, he must decide what to do.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Older teens who are fans of anyone in the cast or futuristic sci-fi stories might be enticed, but few if any other kids will be.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For a scene of sexuality, including brief graphic nudity.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated sci-fi film. Some sexually related dialogue is present, while a woman's genitals are graphically seen in full before she and a man have sex then (with related sounds) and once more (with sounds and some fooling around).

Some bad attitudes are present including a married man having an affair, while those opposed to abortion might not like the government-mandated abortion premise and word that such an act occurs in the film. A brief vehicle wreck has some mild bloody results and an unrelated dead (and non-bloody) body is zipped up in a body bag, while some characters briefly drink or smoke.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned about bright flashes of light on the screen, we see full strobe effects in a club as people dance.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Maria (in voice over narration) asks if a person had a cervesa (presumably meaning a beer).
  • Miscellaneous people drink in a club.
  • William and Maria may have drinks in a club.
  • William and his wife have wine.
  • We see liquor bottles on a wall.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • We hear the sound of Maria urinating as we partially see her sitting on a toilet.
  • We hear news that a person died from a disease where they bled to death. We then see footage of that man on the floor and being zipped up in a body bag, but there are no signs of blood.
  • While driving through the desert, a vehicle runs off the road, crashes and overturns (seen from a distance), with some blood then seen on the driver's face.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • We hear that in the future, if a fetus is determined to have a certain percentage of similar genes (from the mother and father) it will be terminated (those opposed to abortion probably won't like that premise). Later, William believes that Maria, who's now missing, is pregnant and off having a mandated abortion. We then hear that her pregnancy was terminated and her memories of that and events around it have been erased.
  • Maria smuggles out papelles to people who otherwise cannot get them.
  • William cheats on his wife with Maria who he knows is the guilty party he's after (and he doesn't turn her in).
  • William lies to get into Maria's home.
  • A man has sex with a woman despite knowing that it's in violation of Code 46.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • We hear news that a person died from a disease where they bled to death. We then see footage of that man on the floor and being zipped up in a body bag, but there are no signs of blood.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • None.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "Piss."
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • None.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • None.
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 1 damn.
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • While William interviews various people during his investigation, one woman says that she finds freckles to be a turn on and that there's no freckle pornography. He then mentions Anne of Green Gables and she says that she sees that as an erotic classic.
  • A female lounge singer shows a great deal of leg while performing.
  • Maria equates William using an empathy virus to x-ray specs that allow guys to look at girls' underwear.
  • Maria asks William why he's being so nice to her and wonders if he's expecting a reward (possibly meaning sexual).
  • William and Maria do some brief, passionate clothed kissing. After a brief pause, they begin disrobing each other with some more passionate kissing (but no explicit nudity). We then see her pleased facial expressions and pleasured sounds, as well as a head and shoulders shot of her on top of him, licking his ear. Sex is implied, but both are still clothed up top (we can't see the lower halves of their bodies).
  • Maria does some desperate kissing on William as he prepares to leave.
  • A clinic worker comments on Maria and the man, the sex act and the resultant pregnancy.
  • William and Maria shower together, but the head and shoulders shot shows that she still has some sort of top on (we see the straps).
  • William and Maria get a room together and embrace on the bed where she partially gets on top of him (both are still clothed). She then says, "I want you to make love to me" and then "Make me make love to you." He then uses belts to tie her hands to the bed and then removes her skirt. We then see a full view of her genitals and he climbs on top her (we don't see any of his nudity). We then see just shots of her face as they have sex (in a sensual manner) and hear heavy breathing and panting, etc.
  • William and Maria do some brief, passionate kissing (while clothed).
  • William and his wife passionately kiss where we see her in a halter top and small panties, while he's still clothed.
  • SMOKING
  • A man at a checkpoint tries to sell William cigarettes.
  • A few miscellaneous people smoke in a few scenes.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • We hear that William's parents are dead and that he was conceived in vitro.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • We hear that in the future, if a fetus is determined to have a certain percentage of similar genes (from the mother and father) it will be terminated.
  • The future.
  • The government deciding who can have babies.
  • Genetics.
  • The comment that if all kids are special, it makes you wonder where the average adults come from.
  • Maria asks that if you knew the outcome of what you were getting into, would you still take the first step into it.
  • We hear that William's parents are dead and that he was conceived in vitro.
  • VIOLENCE
  • While driving through the desert, a vehicle runs off the road, crashes and overturns (seen from a distance), with some blood then seen on the driver's face.
