QUICK TAKE:
Romantic Comedy: A self-doubting, thirty-something woman must decide who and what will make her happy in her life.
PLOT:
After a lifelong obsession with finding happiness in her life while dealing with her various vices and neuroses, Bridget Jones (RENÉE ZELLWEGER) would seem to have had her fairy tale style happy ending. After all, she's now a TV reporter and she finally got her prince -- in the form of human rights lawyer Mark Darcy (COLIN FIRTH) -- who's now been her live-in boyfriend for several weeks.

Yet, her trio of friends -- Tom (JAMES CALLIS), Shazza (SALLY PHILLIPS) and Jude (SHIRLEY HENDERSON) -- can't leave well enough alone and make Bridget begin to wonder if Mark is having an affair with Rebecca (JACINDA BARRETT), a younger woman who always seems overeager around him.

Things get worse when she's assigned to work with Daniel Cleaver (HUGH GRANT), her former boss with whom she had a fling in the past and who's now host of a TV travel show. With her relationship with Mark hitting the rocks for a number of reasons and Daniel moving back in on her, Bridget must decide who and what will make her happy in her life.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated romantic comedy. Profanity consists of at least 24 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. All sorts of sexually related dialogue (some of it explicit) is present, sex is implied between and referenced about an unmarried couple and nearly occurs between another unmarried couple (with making out and related fooling around). Some women are seen in revealing attire, some art museum paintings show old-fashioned female full frontal nudity and a woman admits that she's a lesbian and plants a kiss on another woman.

Various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes, including a man who spikes women's food with drugs (causing some comical hallucinations) and gives one of them a container that gets her busted at the airport for unknowingly transporting drugs. Various characters also drink and/or smoke. Some slapstick style material is present, while two men briefly fight (struggling for comedic effect).

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

  • A stranger who's with Shazza and Bridget comments on the magic mushrooms that are in whatever they're eating. We then see Bridget having a series of funny hallucinations from that. When Daniel finds her that way, he states that she's charming on drugs and that in the future she should just say yes.
  • Airport police in a foreign country hold their guns on Bridget as she's busted for drugs. She didn't know she was carrying any, but when a bowl -- that Shazza handed her and which was given to her by a stranger -- is broken up, lots of cocaine comes out.

  • It sounds like some foreign women in prison with Bridget sing Madonna's "Like a Virgin" song with the line "F*cked for the very first time" rather than "Touched for the very first time" but their accents make it hard to tell.
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 24 "f" words (with another 2 possible ones used sexually in a sung song, while other slang terms including many variations of "shag" as well as "do," "doing it" and "snogged" are uttered), 6 "s" words, 1 slang term each using male and female genitals ("c*ck" and "p*ssy"), 7 asses (2 used with "hole"), 2 hells, 1 bugger, 1 crap, 1 damn, 20 uses of "Oh God," 5 of "Oh my God," 2 of "For God's sakes" and 1 use each of "For Christ's sakes," "God" and "Oh Christ."

  • Another comment is made about then knowing that a man is "shagging" her.
  • Bridget makes some comment about "We'll have sex in the kitchen."
  • Bridget is jealous of Rebecca, thinking that she and Mark are having an affair. She then goes to his place and spies on them, hearing lines such as "I'm coming" and "Let's get on with it" (that turn out to be taken out of context).
  • Bridget gets out of bed (where Mark still lies) with a sheet around her as she tries to get dressed. He asks what she's doing and she states that she doesn't want him to see her "wobbly bits." He says it's high time he had another look and she drops the sheet in front of him, but all we see of her is a head and shoulders shot.
  • Bridget and Mark do some passionate, clothed kissing.
  • Bridget hears a man ask her, "Ever fancy doing it in the dark with a total stranger?" (it turns out to be Daniel).

  • Bridget shows varying amounts of cleavage (sometimes a lot) in various outfits throughout the movie.
  • Rebecca shows some cleavage while leaning over.
  • We see Bridget and Mark in bed several times, seemingly nude under the sheets, but nothing sexual occurs between them during those scenes.
  • Bridget comments on taking a holiday (vacation) after eight weeks of undisturbed sex. She then suddenly fears that she's pregnant and takes a test, but it's negative.
  • Mark and Bridget argue about what sort of school their future children might attend, with Mark mockingly commenting on her choice being one where the students practice group masturbation.
  • The camera scans across the neighborhood where we see many tiny views of people in their places, some of which appear to be amorous but the images are so small and so briefly seen that no details are noted.

  • Daniel tells Bridget that she was the "best shag" he ever had, with him then making a joking aside about some guy in the fifth grade. • Daniel does some suggestive astronomy talk about being naughty and trying to undo Orion's belt.
  • Daniel and Bridget do some passionate kissing and then continue on his hotel bed where he states that he hopes she's wearing her giant panties. He then lifts up her dress and we see a partial view of them as he says something like "Daddy's home." She stops him, gets up and goes into the bathroom to regain her composure. When she comes back out, she seems willing to spend the night with him, but then a local prostitute shows up (that Daniel apparently hired) and opens her overcoat to reveal garters and a small bra and panties (she says that Daniel had a different woman the night before and that he was a big tipper). Daniel then tells Bridget that he's up for it (a threesome) if she is, but Bridget is mad. As she storms out, she sarcastically states that she hopes he has a terrific weekend shagathon. She then adds that he should "go and f*ck yourself, or her, but not me."
  • It sounds like some foreign women in prison with Bridget sing Madonna's "Like a Virgin" song with the line "F*cked for the very first time" rather than "Touched for the very first time" but their accents make it hard to tell.
  • We see several large art museum paintings that show several instances of female full frontal nudity.
  • Daniel matter-of-factly states that the young Thai girl who spent the night with him (as a call girl) turned out to be a young Thai boy.
