QUICK TAKE:
Drama: Nine years after their one chance encounter in Europe, a man and woman reunite and explore their feelings about themselves and each other.
PLOT:
Jesse (ETHAN HAWKE) is an author promoting his latest work in Paris that's based on his real-life, one-day encounter with the woman of his dreams in Vienna. He's about to fly back to the U.S. when that very woman, Celine (JULIE DELPY), suddenly shows up at his book signing, stating that she saw advertisements for his appearance and had to stop by.

The two immediately take up where they left off some nine years earlier, first discussing why their subsequently planned meeting never happened and then catching up on what's happened to them since then.

With only a few hours before his flight, Jesse and Celine wander the streets of Paris as they reconnect, explore their feelings about themselves and each other, and ponder what might have been between them.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Unless they're fans of Hawke, Delpy, director Richard Linklater or this film's predecessor, it doesn't seem too likely.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For language and sexual references.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • ETHAN HAWKE plays a married author who's in Paris promoting his latest work. When Celine suddenly reenters his life, he contemplates his relationship with himself, his wife and Celine. He uses strong profanity, talks of his sexual encounter with Celine many years ago and briefly smokes.
  • JULIE DELPY plays an environmentalist living in Paris who stops by to see Jesse on his book tour. She goes through a range of emotions as she remembers their one day together nine years ago (when they had sex) and the effect it had on her and her view of relationships then and in the intervening years since then. She also uses some strong profanity and briefly smokes.

Various instances of sexually related dialogue (some of it explicit) are present as the unmarried couple talks about sex and their sexual encounter many years ago.

A few characters drink or smoke, while a few bad attitudes (and potentially offensive comments) are present. Tense family material briefly touches on talk of a grandmother's death and a strained marriage.

Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Miscellaneous people have champagne.
  • We see some liquor at a bar and then see a miscellaneous person with a glass of wine.
  • Celine comments about having a "natural high" from being away from ads and other consumerism, and getting "high" from shopping.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • None.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Celine jokes about potentially being raped and murdered while waiting for police to arrive after calling in and reporting some suspicious sounds in the past (some viewers might not like her joking about that).
  • Jesse and Celine state that neither has strong religious beliefs and Celine later states that she doesn't believe in God (some viewers might not like that).
  • Celine tells a joke about a person going to see a monk who then offered to "suck his c*ck." Jesse then says that's what he admires about what she does (meaning her attitude), but she jokingly replies, "What, sucking c*ck?" (some viewers might not like that joke).
  • Jesse admits that he thought of Celine before his wedding and even on his way to the ceremony. It's then somewhat implied that he stays with Celine rather than returning home to his wife, but that's never made absolutely clear by the end of the film.
  • Celine rants over men learning from their relationship and applying it to their next and not to her (and briefly gets mad at Jesse regarding that).
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • None.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • None, but Celine states that when she called the police in NYC, a male officer pulled his gun and told her that she should get one for her own protection.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "Where the f*ck were you?" "Sh*tty," "Bullsh*t," "Oh sh*t," "Deep sh*t," "Horny," "Take the piss out of the whole thing," "That would have sucked," "I was a total dork," "Chicks," "French bitch" and "French slut"(how Celine jokingly refers to herself), "Sit around and bitch," "Suck," "Screwed up," "Damn happy," "They drive me nuts," "Fatty," "To hell with it," "Pissed off," "Nuts" (crazy), "Screw it up," "Screwed over," "Pisses me off," "Screw you," "You idiot," "Hell no," "Crap out" and "Are you nuts?"
  • After waving all of her fingers, Celine then playfully leaves her middle one up, giving Jesse "the finger." She later does this again.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • None.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • Celine sings a song for Jesse that's about them and their earlier, one-night stand (a few lines reference that, but nothing explicit).

  • At least 5 "f" words (2 used sexually), 7 "s" words, 3 slang terms for male genitals ("c*ck" and "peepee"), 1 for female genitals ("p*ssy"), 3 asses (2 used with "hole"), 2 hells, 1 crap, 1 damn, 5 uses of "God" and 3 uses of "Oh God."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • We see a flashback of Jesse and Celine briefly but passionately kissing.
  • Jesse talks about a pending story where a man looks back on his life to a time when he and a girl just lost their virginity.
  • Jesse states that when Celine didn't show up at their meeting point in the past, he put up fliers with his number on them. She asks if he got any calls and he jokes that some were from hookers trying to get a gig.
  • Jesse makes a comment about making love for ten days straight with Celine, prompting Celine to call her character in his story a French slut.
  • Celine states that she's had bad luck with men and complains that French men are not as "horny" as Americans are. That prompts Jesse to say he's proud to be an American.
  • When Celine asks if she looks any different after 9 years, Jesse jokingly states that he'd have to see her naked to know.
  • Celine tells a joke about a person going to see a monk who then offered to "suck his c*ck." Jesse then says that's what he admires about what she does (meaning her attitude), but she jokingly replies, "What, sucking c*ck?"
  • Jesse and Celine end up talking about their sexual encounter nine years ago, with him wondering if they had problems. She swears they didn't have sex because he didn't have a condom and that's one of her ground rules, especially for one-night stands. He then says that they did have sex and that he even remembers the brand of the condom he used. She then remembers them having sex in the park.
  • Celine states that she remembers her mother warning her about dirty old men trying to lure her (as a child) with candy and then showing her their "peepee." She then says that affected her later in life about sex.
  • Jesse jokingly makes a comment about "in between sessions of us wildly f*cking" in a hotel. She then jokingly asks why in a hotel room and why not in the park, so he playfully pulls her down onto him as she sits on a park bench (but nothing else happens and both are fully clothed).
  • Celine chats about a girlfriend of hers telling that woman's boyfriend what would please her more sexually. She then comments that men are easier to please in such regards. She then says that her friend made up a checklist of sexual questions, such as whether the person is into S&M (with a joke being made that the answer is no, but that a little spanking can't hurt) or likes to talk dirty. Celine then asks what Jesse thinks of the word "p*ssy" and he says that he likes it.
  • She then comments on how many times he's probably had sex since they last saw each other and jokingly says that he "stuck it in so many places" that it's about to fall off. He then jokes the same about her, saying she's a "ho" (whore).
  • Celine's small shirt blows up in the wind on a boat ride, exposing her bare belly, back and side, but we don't see anything explicit.
  • Jesse states that he got married because his girlfriend was pregnant.
  • Jesse admits to Celine that he's had less sex than a monk has in that he's had it less than ten times in the past four years. Celine jokes about the monk comparison (since they don't have sex) and then says that the wife wouldn't want to have sex after having a child. She then asks him if he could have finished his book if her were "f*cking someone every five minutes" and he says he'd welcome trying to do just that.
  • Celine reminds Jesse that they had sex twice nine years ago.
  • Jesse tells Celine that he dreams of her naked and pregnant in bed with him.
  • Celine jokingly asks Jesse if an earlier comment from him was said to "get in my pants. He says it was, she asks if that works, and he replies that it does sometimes.
  • Celine sings a song for Jesse that's about them and their earlier, one-night stand (a few lines reference that).
  • As Celine talks about a performer's stage presence, she comments on the women's "ass" and then sashays a bit while walking away from the camera (clothed) to imitate her.
  • SMOKING
  • Jesse and Celine share a cigarette before she gives him one of his own, while some miscellaneous characters smoke (one with a pipe) in a few scenes.
