QUICK TAKE:
Subtitled Drama/Thriller: A filmmaker's turbulent childhood and its effect on him resurface when his former childhood friend and fellow Catholic schoolboy suddenly appears with a script about their past and the priest who abused them.
PLOT:
Enrique Goded (FELE MARTÍNEZ) is a Madrid-based filmmaker who's surprised when his former childhood friend Ignacio Rodríguez (GAEL GARCÍA BERNAL) suddenly shows up in his office. It's been sixteen years since they last saw each other as Catholic schoolboys who had to deal with their school's pedophilic principal, Father Manolo (DANIEL GIMÉNEZ CACHO), as well as their own homosexual awakening together.

Ignacio, who also goes by the stage name of Angel in his transvestite act, says he has written a screenplay where the first half is based on their childhood past and the second is fictitious. As we see flashbacks to their past and other earlier time periods, Ignacio threatens to blackmail Manolo with the script.

As his ploy unfolds, more revelations occur and others -- including publisher Mr. Berenguer (LLUIS HOMAR) and Ignacio's younger brother Juan -- get involved, all as Enrique becomes increasingly suspicious and tries to figure out what's going on.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Unless they're fans of someone in the cast or the film's director, it's highly unlikely.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: NC-17
For a scene of explicit sexual content.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
To prevent the revelation of various surprises and developments, just the initial and main characteristics are noted below:
  • FELE MARTÍNEZ plays a film director who uses strong profanity, smokes and has a gay sexual past (as a boy) and present, both of which are brought up with Ignacio's arrival.
  • GAEL GARCÍA BERNAL plays Enrique's now adult and former childhood friend who has homosexual sex, appears as a transsexual, uses strong profanity and is a drug addict.
  • DANIEL GIMÉNEZ CACHO plays the pedophilic priest in charge of the boys in the past.
  • LLUIS HOMAR plays a man who claims to be the formerly defrocked priest and is now a publisher who has an interest in Ignacio's screenplay.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this drama that's been rated NC-17 where not everything turns out to be what it initially seems. Profanity consists of at least 13 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually explicit dialogue is present as are some homosexual encounters (with oral sex, anal sex with graphic movement and nudity, boys masturbating each other, etc.) and nudity (bare butts, breasts, pubic hair). Other sexual material involves suggested/off-screen pedophilic material involving a priest having sex with school-age boys.

Other bad attitudes are present, including two people who switch a person's drugs so that the victim dies from an ingestion of pure heroin. A priest throws a boy to the floor and one punches a character in the gut and appears to break their neck (but it's just a scene on a film set). Various characters drink and/or smoke, while some use drugs and/or are noted as being drug addicts. Tense family material includes a mother briefly talking about her dead son and how that affected her other son.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

  • We see a person who's dead from ingesting pure heroin (his head is resting on a typewriter) that was altered by others to kill him.

  • A comment is made that there's nothing less erotic than an actor looking for work.
  • We see more old sexy posters (such as above).
  • We see Zahara, a transvestite, transsexual or similar performer doing "her" thing on the stage. The camera focuses on Zahara's clothed butt in a dress and then goes up until we see a bare breast through the see-thru fabric.
  • Enrique suggestively states he can't find his keys, causing Zahara to frisk him in a sexy manner, including having "her" head at his clothed crotch. We then see several shots from later where Zahara is performing oral sex on Enrique (with head movement at the crotch and related sounds, but not the actual contact). Enrique falls asleep during this and Zahara states, "Hey, I'm sucking your d*ck." Moments later, another person asks if Enrique is "well hung," Zahara says he's not bad but is still "hard." That person wants to perform oral sex on Enrique, but Zahara won't let him, making a comment about his lips wearing out earlier. We then see an erection under the sheet and Zahara licks his finger and puts it down to his butt (the contact is not seen), crawls on top of the passed out Enrique and his erection, and then has anal sex on top of him. We then see a close-up of Ignacio's bare butt as he pulls up his jeans and then see a front view where those jeans are still unzipped and show pubic hair.
