QUICK TAKE:
Drama: A commitment-phobic playboy begins to see the error of his romantic ways while romancing various women.
PLOT:
It's the city that never sleeps and Alfie Elkins (JUDE LAW) is a limo driver who's just as prone to driving his rich clients, such as Dorie (JANE KRAKOWSKI), to their destinations as he is to have sex with them in the back of the limo. Although he and his best friend Marlon (OMAR EPPS) hope to buy the limo business from their boss, Mr. Wing (GEDDE WATANABE0), his real interest is in bedding as many women as possible, all while avoiding any sort of commitment.

That said, he has a quasi, semi-regular girlfriend in the form of single mom Julie (MARISA TOMEI), but that ends when she tires of his mindset and shenanigans. After a one-night stand with Marlon's on-again, off-again girlfriend, Lonette (NIA LONG), Alfie moves on to wild-child Nikki (SIENNA MILLER) who turns out to be a manic depressive and then Liz (SUSAN SARANDON), a rich and sophisticated older woman who briefly takes him as her lover.

As Alfie constantly informs us of how he feels about them, himself and life in Manhattan, he eventually begins to see the error of his romantic ways and hopes to set things straight before it's too late.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a quick look at the content found in this R-rated drama. Profanity consists of at least 2 "f" words while other expletives and colorful phrases are uttered. Various instances of sexually related dialogue are present and several casual sexual encounters are seen (with movement, sounds, and one resulting in a pregnancy). Others are implied (including a threesome interrupted by a bout of erectile dysfunction), a woman is seen in just some thong underwear (bare breasts, most of her bare butt) and the camera focuses on women's clothed or partially clothed body parts in various scenes.

An abortion is initially suggested, but we later learn it didn't occur, while there's no talk of or trying to avoid STDs (regarding all of the casual sex behavior). Various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes, while several drink (some to the point of intoxication and a related one-night stand) and/or smoke, two smoke pot and two drink absinthe.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Alfie tells Julie that he stole some Stoli (vodka) from the limo and asks how she'd like hers. She suggestively replies that she'd like it "straight up."
  • Alfie drinks.
  • Alfie wonders what the level of inebriation was for Marlon when he was with Lonette, and Marlon replies "vomiting."
  • Alfie and Marlon have drinks, as do others.
  • Alfie shows up at Julie's place holding a bottle of champagne.
  • Alfie has a beer and then many shots with Lonette, eventually leaving them intoxicated and leading to them having sex.
  • People do a lot of drinking in a club.
  • In a flashback, we see Alfie, Marlon and Lonette with a bottle of booze in front of them.
  • Nikki's friends drink in Alfie's limo.
  • Nikki lights up and smokes a joint, and then shares it with Alfie.
  • People drink at a party.
  • People have champagne on New Year's Eve.
  • Liz tells Alfie that they should have a drink. He says he'll have some whiskey, but she was taking about absinthe that we then see her making into a powerful drink that both of them have. They then have more.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Alfie waits to use a urinal currently accompanied by an older man at a urology center who states he used to pee but now just trickles (we don't see anything over than him standing there, but do hear some brief, related sounds).
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Alfie (in his usual charming way), refers to his older, somewhat overweight neighbor as a "tub of lard" and states that her ship has sailed. He then adds, however, that why not make her feel good (which is why he complements her, etc. but he may be doing that just to get her to volunteer to clean his place, which is what she does).
  • Alfie tells Julie that he stole some Stoli (vodka) from the limo and asks how she'd like hers.
  • Alfie states that women have a shorter shelf life than men do.
  • A woman from Alfie's past shows cleavage and Alfie states that "the show" with her closed after only one performance (due to her having hairy arms).
  • Alfie justifies sleeping with Lonette as it possibly alleviating her anger toward Marlon. He tries to elude Marlon the next day, however, but is relieved to hear that Lonette didn't tell Marlon but instead got back together with him.
  • Liz states that the older man with her isn't her husband, but is to someone else.
  • Liz admits to smuggling absinthe into the U.S. (where it's illegal) by putting it into mouthwash bottles.
  • Alfie breaks off any relationship he's in when it gets too serious for him (and has casual sex with various women).
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • None.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS

  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "F*cked up," "Oh, f*ck a duck," "Bird sh*t," "Oh sh*t," "Bullsh*t," "When it comes to shagging birds" (having sex with women), "Or am I a glorified booty call," "Next time, think before unzipping," "Blimey," "Bloody hell," "Chicks," "Pissy," "Fashionista," "Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder," "Load of bollocks," "Old bat" and "You screwed up."
  • It's possible the film could inspire some teen boys to emulate Alfie and his caddish attitude and sexual objectification of women.
  • Liz admits to smuggling absinthe into the U.S. (where it's illegal) by putting it into mouthwash bottles.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.

  • SEX/NUDITY
  • The camera focuses on the bulge at the clothed crotch area of a Superman doll.
  • Alfie states that what's important to him is FBB ("face, boobs, bum") and we then see close-ups of all three (the latter two shown in skimpy attire with cleavage and other bare skin).
  • We see Alfie in just a towel.
  • Alfie sprays cologne down into his pants, refers to his unseen genitals as "Big Ben" and then states that you never known where the day might take you.
  • Alfie makes a location comment about "When it comes to shagging birds" (having sex with women).
  • We hear sex sounds and then see Alfie having sex with Dorie in the back of a limo (she's on top with movement, but no nudity). He mentions that this is his favorite position (which he says was the same for JFK) in that it creates maximum pleasure with minimal effort. He tells us that her "old man" (husband) hasn't "shagged" her for six months. When they're done, we see her bra partially down across her breasts (showing the tops and just glimpses of her nipples) and we see a lot of leg as Alfie comments on them as well as her "yoga bum." Later, and as he's driving and she's in the back, he tells her to have another mint so that her husband doesn't smell (what sounded like) the outfield (all as she sucks on his ear from the backseat). As she walks away after he drops her off, the camera focuses on her butt in her short and very tight skirt (and Alfie tells her that her derriere looks ravishing from his point).
  • Alfie jokes to Julie that Dorie had him up and down for hours as his limo passenger.
  • Alfie and Julie kiss on the sofa and she starts to run her hand down toward his clothed crotch, but he stops her, although he's on top of her between her legs. He then tells her that he stole some Stoli (vodka) from the limo and asks how she'd like hers. She suggestively replies that she'd like it "straight up."
  • Julie asks Alfie if she's just a "glorified booty call" to him right around the time he finds a pair of Dorie's panties in his pocket (that Dorie told him was a surprise gift). Julie later shows that she found them (after Alfie threw them into the trash).
  • We see the top of Julie's thong as Alfie lifts her over his shoulder and we then see part of her bra exposed in her low-cut shirt.
  • We see a hooker in small and tight shorts propositioning various men.
  • The camera focuses on Lonette's clothed butt as she walks along (she also shows some cleavage).
  • A woman from Alfie's past shows cleavage and Alfie states that "the show" with her closed after only one performance (due to her having hairy arms).
  • The term "screwing around" is used sexually and Lonette makes a comment about another woman having a "fake ass" and "$5 t*tties."
  • While intoxicated, Lonette tells Alfie that she's never had sex with more than one person in one night. She then asks how many he has had in one night, but he doesn't answer. The two dance closely and then passionately make out (with heavy breathing), with him then lying her down on a pool table. We later see brief flashbacks to their encounter with kissing, caressing and him on top of her.
  • We see shots of women's bare legs in a bar.
  • Alfie talks that when it comes to sexual experimentation, women are not treated as fairly as men are. He then mentions a threesome to two women who are already passionately kissing. We then see them on a sofa with the two women apparently coming up from his crotch (the back of the sofa blocks any nudity or view of what they were doing). He apparently has an erectile problem, says he doesn't know why and tells them to continue without him (they start kissing and slink down out of the shot).
  • We then see two women in later scenes who are upset that Alfie is unable to perform (one in bed, the other in a bathtub).
  • Alfie goes to see a doctor about his erectile dysfunction, with the male doc bending down toward Alfie's unseen crotch and stating, "Let's take a gander at that penis of yours." After a moment, he stands and states that it seems "like we have a lift-off" and Alfie uses the term "stiffy" for his unseen erection.
  • Alfie gingerly walks down the sidewalk after having a penis biopsy (after a doc said he found a lump) with his hands over his clothed crotch. A woman with kids sees him that way and hurries off.
  • Lonette informs Alfie that she's pregnant by him. In a later scene, she comes out of a building and states that she feels empty (suggesting she had an abortion, but we later learn that's not the case).
  • Liz shows some cleavage and we then see that she has a tattoo on her breast (and Alfie states that she has cleavage like the Holland Tunnel).
  • The camera focuses on Nikki's legs.
  • Alfie and Nikki do some passionate kissing and heavy breathing in his limo. He then partially lies down on top of her, kisses her neck and then comments in voice over that "Little Alfred" (meaning his penis) finally got what he wanted for Christmas. He later makes a positive sexual remark about her.
  • Alfie states that while she and Nikki grew apart, they did still have one thing in common (meaning sex). We then see a still photo that shows her leaning back, apparently nude, but we only see the back half of her body. He then adds that if only she didn't insist on smoking before, during and after.
  • Nikki wants Alfie to stay when he's about to leave, stating that she can make it worth his while. She drops his shirt that she was wearing, revealing her in just thong panties (we see her bare butt cheeks as well as several views of her bare breasts as she walks about their place).
  • Alfie makes a comment about Liz's décolletage.
  • Alfie and Liz do some passionate kissing.
  • An older man tells Alfie (about his sexual dalliances), "Next time, think before unzipping."

  • In a flashback, we briefly see one of Alfie's former girlfriends in some skimpy attire.
  • SMOKING
  • Alfie smokes around 10 times (once with a cigar), Nikki and Lonette each smoke several times and some miscellaneous people smoke.
  • We see lots of cigarette butts in Alfie's ashtray.
  • Alfie comments on Nikkie and sex and then adds that if only she didn't insist on smoking before, during and after.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • A man states that his wife died in the past.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Casual sex, sex with many partners and the threat of STDs.
  • People who can't commit to long-term relationships.
  • Alfie states that women have a shorter shelf life than men do.
  • Alfie states that Julie doesn't have enough superficial traits that matter to him.
  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • Lonette informs Alfie that she's pregnant by him. In a later scene, she comes out of a building and states that she feels empty (suggesting she had an abortion, but we later learn that's not the case).
  • The comment of living every day like it's your last.
