QUICK TAKE:
Drama/Thriller: A highly successfully but retired jewel thief is lured back into business by the appearance of a rare diamond at his new tropical home, but must not only deal with a federal agent who's after him, but also his lover and former accomplice who wants him to stay retired.
PLOT:
Max Burdett (PIERCE BROSNAN) and Lola Cirillo (SALMA HAYEK) are two of the most successful jewel thieves the world has ever known, much to the chagrin of federal agent Stanley Lloyd (WOODY HARRELSON) who's been on to them for years, but still manages to lose a valuable diamond to them despite the utmost preparations and security. Max and Lola are now retired and living in a tropical paradise with Lola hoping they might get married, but Max hasn't been able to retire his itch for action.

He gets the chance to get back into the business when Stanley unexpectedly shows up. He states that he knows that Max is planning on stealing the one stone he never had a chance at, the third Napoleon Diamond that just so happens to have arrived on a cruise ship touring the islands. Max claims he's retired, but the allure of the stone is too much for him to resist.

The same holds true for Henry Moore (DON CHEADLE), a transplanted American who's taken to island life as the top gangster there who wants Max to steal the diamond for him. That's drawn the attention of local cop Sophie St. Vincent (NAOMIE HARRIS) who's suspicious of him, Stanley and Max.

With a window of only a few days when the diamond will be there, Max gets the bug to steal it for himself. Yet, he must not only contend with Stanley watching his every move, but also Lola expressing her displeasure in his decision to come out of retirement for one last big score.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Some older teens might be interested in it, as might fans of anyone in the cast, but younger kids probably won't care about it.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this dramatic thriller that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of at least 1 "f" word, while other expletives and colorful phrases are uttered. Various instances of sexually related dialogue are present as are several partially and/or briefly seen sexual encounters (including heavy making out, partial nudity, some undressing, etc.) while other sexual behavior is implied. Various women are seen in sometimes very revealing attire (lots of cleavage and other skin) and viewers may want to note that most of the women are sexualized in one fashion or another. Some gay-related humor (featuring two heterosexual men) is also present.

Violence consists of a person being shot to death after threatening and attempting to kill others, while another person is wounded (with a little resultant blood) and is fired upon in separate scenes. Some other fighting and struggling also occurs, and some of those scenes could be unsettling or suspenseful to some viewers. Various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes, while some smoke (cigars) and/or drink, some to the point of inebriation (although that's faked in one scene).

Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

  • Stanley and Lola have wine, as do Max and Sophie.
  • Max, Lola, Stanley and Sophie celebrate with champagne.
  • Stanley and Max have drinks, as do others, but Stanley then lets Max know that their drinks are alcohol-free.

  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Max and Lola are professional jewel thieves and Max decides to come out of retirement to steal one more.

  • Stanley is in Max's place without a search warrant.
  • Henry makes it sound as if he has a social conscience, but he's really just after the diamond for his own good. He also threatens and attempts to kill several people.
  • Max breaks into the ship to photograph blueprints of its layout for Henry to use in stealing the diamond.
  • We learn that an agent is pursuing a case without authorization.
  • We learn that a federal agent has turned criminal.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence" may also be unsettling or suspenseful to some viewers.
  • Max retrieves a gun from a waterproof bag that was hidden in a small pond and then enters his place with that gun drawn. He finds Stanley who then suddenly spins around and both aim their guns at each other.
  • Stanley slowly goes to investigate a small shark Max landed on their boat while fishing. As Stanley reaches out to touch it, it suddenly moves. He then shoots the shark many times with his gun (we don't see the impact and it's all played for laughs).
  • Both Sophie and Stanley move around a ship with their guns drawn. After Sophie has her gun on a suspect, Stanley steps in the way, allowing the suspect to strike Stanley, knocking him back into Sophie and both fall to the deck as the suspect escapes.
  • Stanley suddenly doesn't have any air while scuba diving and panics while inside a shipwreck (but is okay as Lola and Max come to his rescue).
  • A man holds a gun to Lola's neck while holding her by her hair. He then hits Max across the face with his gun, knocking him to the floor. Lola then hits him, but that man knocks Lola to the floor and prepares to shoot Max but Lola throws a small knife or letter opener that lands in the man's leg. He then prepares to shoot, but is fatally shot by others (no blood).
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Handguns/Knife/: Carried and/or used to threaten, wound or kill others. See "Violence" for details.
  • One of Henry's thugs shows Max his gun as a way of making him taking a ride with him.

  • Phrases: "I'm Irish, now f*ck off," "No sh*t," "Eat sh*t," "Too damn complicated," "Cheap bastard," "You son of a bitch," "Kiss ass," "Hell of a watch," "Lucky bastard," "That little bitch" (how Lola refers to the diamond), "Cut the crap," "Jerk," "A hell of a catch," "What the hell /is that/are you doing here?" "You had to make an ass out of me," "You had to screw me one last time" (nonsexual), "Shut up," "Nice throw bitch" and "You bastard."
  • It's possible the film could inspire some kids to want to become thieves of some sort (especially since such related planning and execution is made to look cool).
  • A suspect gingerly walks down two parallel guide ropes leading from a ship down to the dock.
  • Lola wears a midriff-revealing top.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • Stanley slowly goes to investigate a small shark Max landed on their boat while fishing. As Stanley reaches out to touch it, it suddenly moves.

  • A heavy amount of suspenseful and action-based music plays in the film.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • None.

  • SEX/NUDITY
  • We briefly see some cheerleaders sashaying around in very small and very tight shorts.
  • As Lola changes out of her disguise attire, Max states that he loves it when she undresses and the two passionately kiss (initially making us think Max is kissing a guy due to her mask and attire).
  • Lola shows varying amounts of cleavage (sometimes a great deal, such as when she bends over) in various outfits throughout the film.
  • There are various shots of Max without a shirt in the film.
  • Max and Lola do some passionate, clothed kissing.
  • We see a side shot of Lola lying topless on top of Max in the surf and see the side of her bare breasts that are smashed down onto his bare chest. We then see an aerial view that pulls away to some distance, showing her bare back and very small bikini/thong bottom that shows part of her bare butt in that same position.
  • Lola shakes her bikini-covered chest while dancing with Max.
  • We see a view from behind Lola as she runs into and then dives under the surf (she's wearing a small bikini bottom).
  • The camera focuses on a woman's clothed butt as she walks by.
  • Another couple tells Max and Lola that they like to swap and then clarify that by saying they like to have sex with other couples.
  • While having dinner with Max and Lola, a man states that there's only thing he likes to eat more than lobster (referring to his wife) and then adds that he really loves lobster.
  • Lola runs up to Max on the beach in a very small bikini and then playfully tells him that she thought he liked when she gave him mouth to mouth (after he comments about Scuba diving by saying he likes to breathe unassisted).
  • We see Lola in a tiny, halter-top like outfit that basically covers only the area immediately around her bust.
  • Lola reports that her tennis instructor said she had the best backside he'd ever seen (Max replies he was supposed to say "backhand").
  • We see Stanley in his boxers in his hotel room. Two exotic looking masseuses then show up (sporting cleavage), with one saying she'll do his back and the other his front.
  • While talking about the diamond but using sex as a metaphor, Max says that the only way to rid yourself of temptation is to yield to it. Lola, however, drops her robe and then lies back on a bed in very small panties and a bra, and suggestively mentions the solution being substituting something more tempting. He then kisses her belly and moves on top of her (clothed) and they kiss.
  • Sophie talks to Stanley about outsider men arriving on the island and wanting a "slice of paradise" with a local girl, and that they'll say anything to get it (referring to Stanley).
  • We see miscellaneous women on the ship in bikinis.
  • A woman in Henry's headquarters is in a bikini. We then see another wearing some sort of fishnet top that looks revealing, but shows nothing explicit.
  • We briefly see some scantly clad dancers gyrating in glass booths and around poles in one of Henry's casinos. Henry then mentions something about that all people should have female companionship.
  • Stanley makes a comment about an assistant "with the big t*ts."
  • While fishing, Stanley wants to put sunscreen on Max who isn't thrilled with that idea. When Stanley asks doesn't Max want it everywhere, Max says, "My pole," causing Stanley to back away and say "No way, man" (thinking he's referring to his genitals). Max, however, is referring to a bite on his fishing pole.
  • Stanley listens to Max and Lola in their room (via an audio bug he planted). What he doesn't realize, however, is that they're on to him and thus put on an audio show with comments about being naughty enough to spank, "I'll do anything for you" and Lola saying she's invited her girlfriend to join them (for a threesome). This goes on until they reveal that they know Stanley is listening.
  • Lola states that Max is cheating on her, but not with a woman but rather a diamond (and states that she's jealous). She then tells Max that she knows a thing or two about distractions and that while the diamond might be beautiful, it's no fun in the tub (in which Max is located). She then takes off her robe (we see her bare back) and climbs into the tub with him.
  • Sophie makes a comment to Stanley that it's "always about sex."
  • Henry asks Max if he's familiar with the pleasures of anonymous love (Max says he isn't) and that he's been experimenting with alternate lifestyles.
  • We see Lola doing some yoga with her clothed butt suggestively sticking up into the air (suggestive since there's no other purpose for the shot other than to show her in that position).
  • After Sophie gently kisses a sore spot on Stanley's face and he then points out other spots, he jokingly states that he needs to get hurt more often, prompting her to add "And in more interesting places."
  • Sophie and Stanley burst into a room (already partially disrobed) and end up on the bed where they passionately kiss with both of their pants partially off/undone. She suddenly states that she's vibrating, but then indicates it's from her pager and that she has to go. He then pleads for five more minutes (meaning sex), she says he should be embarrassed and he then says three. He then goes down to two minutes, she enthusiastically repeats that number as a question and he states that he's quick. It's suggested that they have sex and Stanley later tells Max that he and Sophie "hooked up" and that it was wonderful.
  • After Lola kicks him out of their place, Max shows up at Stanley's hotel room looking for a place to sleep. When Stanley won't let him move things off the sofa, Max climbs into Stanley's bed (with no sexual intent). The next morning, however, Sophie and Stanley's superiors let themselves into the hotel room and find the two asleep in bed with Stanley's arm over Max (all played for gay-based humor, especially when the others show photos of the two from the day before in innocent poses that look homosexual in the context of the bed material).
  • Some men in party costumes on the ship are portrayed as being gay and happy to see Max drop in (literally, from the ceiling), wearing a scuba diving suit.
  • Stanley makes a joke that the previous night he and Max were "spooning" (in bed in the above scene).
  • We see Lola in a bikini.
  • SMOKING
  • Max and Henry each smoke cigars several times.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • We hear that Sophie is divorced from another cop on the island.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT

  • Another couple tells Max and Lola that they like to swap and then clarify that by saying they like to have sex with other couples.
  • Lola states that the challenge is to find joy in life's simple things.
  • That most of the women here, while sporting other qualities, are portrayed as sexual objects.
  • VIOLENCE
  • A basketball fan briefly struggles with some guards who try to escort him out of the arena (but it's all part of a ruse).
  • Max controls the SUV in which Stanley is a passenger (by remote control) and causes it to smash into vehicles parked in front of and behind it. Two cars then smash into each side of the SUV while corralling it into a certain spot where a large truck then slowly pushes it inside a building.
  • Trapped in an SUV that Max controls, Stanley fires a shot in an attempt to get out, but it doesn't work. As Max pumps knockout gas into the SUV, Stanley panics and eventually fires a shot through the dash vent and the bullet flies out and strikes Max in the shoulder, wounding him (we see blood on his shirt and later see the small bullet hole scar in his skin).
  • When one of Henry's men won't assist her, Sophie grabs the guy by the clothed crotch and squeezes hard.
  • Sophie pushes Stanley up against a tree to frisk him upon first meeting him.
  • Stanley slowly goes to investigate a small shark Max landed on their boat while fishing. As Stanley reaches out to touch it, it suddenly moves. He then shoots the shark many times with his gun (we don't see the impact and played for laughs).
  • A boat worker is grabbed and pulled aside (we later hear he was knocked out).
  • Both Sophie and Stanley move around a ship with their guns drawn. After Sophie has her gun on a suspect, Stanley steps in the way, allowing the suspect to strike Stanley, knocking him back into Sophie and both fall to the deck as the suspect escapes.
  • A festival participant accidentally hits Stanley in the face with his trombone, knocking him to ground.
  • A man pushes some shelves into one guard, knocks another aside and then struggles with more guards as they show up.
  • Several guards shoot at Max who's hidden inside a large vent shaft and scrambles backwards to avoid being hit. Moments later, a guard fires a shot down the shaft toward him and Max falls down an incline and pops out, falling and landing hard on a toilet below him.
  • Stanley is tossed about inside a remote controlled limo, ending with him smashing face-first into its glass partition.
