QUICK TAKE:
Comedy/Adventure: An ex-con poses as an L.A.P.D. detective while trying to retrieve a valuable diamond he earlier stashed in a building that went on to become the police precinct.
PLOT:
Miles Logan (MARTIN LAWRENCE) is a high-tech jewel thief who's after a multimillion dollar diamond. Although he successfully extracts it, his turncoat partner, Deacon (PETER GREENE), kills another member of their team. That sends their driver, Tulley (DAVE CHAPPELLE), speeding away and results in Logan's arrest, but not before he stashes the diamond in a building that's under construction.

Two years later, Logan's released from jail and discovers to his horror that his diamond is now located in the recently completed L.A.P.D. precinct building. Desperate to retrieve it, and with the aid of a master forger, Uncle Lou (RICHARD C. SARAFIAN), Logan poses as a detective and gains access to the building.

Yet in his attempt to find the diamond, Logan inadvertently catches an escaped suspect, drawing the attention of Captain Rizzo (GRAHAM BECKEL). Impressed by Logan's style and faked credentials, Rizzo partners him with Carlson (LUKE WILSON), a green around the edges, rookie detective. After similarly arresting Tulley -- who threatens to blow Logan's cover -- the ex-con soon finds himself promoted to head detective, where he continues to impress other cops such as seasoned pro, Hardcastle (WILLIAM FORSYTHE).

As Logan's intimate knowledge of everything criminal turns him into a proficient detective who's always two steps ahead of the criminals, his quest to retrieve the diamond soon gets him tangled up in other cases and with the FBI.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of Lawrence ("Life," "Nothing To Lose"), they probably will.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For action violence, continuous language and some crude humor.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a quick look at the content found in this PG-13 rated comedy. Violence is action-oriented, but still rates as extreme due to several deaths via gunfire (with slightly bloody results) as well as other gun battles and violence toward criminal suspects played for laughs.

The central character for whom we're supposed to root is a career criminal who imitates being a cop and ends up getting away with all of his activity by the time the story draws to a close. Other characters also have bad attitudes. Profanity is heavy due to more than 40 uses of the "s" word and some slang terms for male genitals, while other cuss words and colorful phrases occur throughout the film.

Some characters are smuggling heroin but we don't see any of its use, some smoking occurs as does a brief bit of scatological humor. Beyond all of that, some imitative material and some brief sexually related comments, the rest of the film is relatively void of any other major objectionable content. As always, however, should you still be concerned with the film's appropriateness for anyone in your home, we suggest that you take a closer look at the detailed content listings.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • We see liquor in a convenience store.
  • Logan, trying to defend Tulley's actions, lies and says that Tulley is "high' and that "He's smoking that sh*t."
  • We learn that some drug dealers were shipping large quantities of heroin and we then see a large pallet of heroin-filled bags (but no drug use).
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • One of Logan's associate's face has some trickles of blood on it.
  • In a moment of scatological humor, Logan spots a cop putting some sort of anti-itch creme down his pants to his crotch (no nudity) and later Logan then refuses to shake this man's hand (all played for laughs).
  • Tulley's nose is a bit bloody after Logan punches him.
  • We see some slightly blood bullet holes in a person's clothes after they've been shot.
  • A man's hand is a bit bloody after he's been shot there.
  • We briefly see some bloody bullet holes in a dead man's clothing.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Logan and his associates are career criminals (and Deacon goes one step further by being a turncoat to them), having stolen a multimillion dollar diamond (and Logan even steals Carlson's police I.D.). Later, Tulley tries to rob a store at gunpoint.
  • The drug dealers who show up at the end have bad attitudes as do some FBI agents toward Logan and the other cops.
  • Logan makes fun of an obese woman.
  • Lou forges a fake I.D. for Logan.
  • Logan and Carlson encounter an auto shop owner guilty of fraud (reporting stolen wheels when he really had them hidden away).
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence" may also be tense to some viewers.
  • A building guard almost catches Logan and his team during the jewelry heist
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Handguns/Shotguns/Semiautomatic weapons/Machine guns/Explosives: Carried and/or used to threaten, wound or kill people. See "Violence" for details.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Due to crowd noise and an intermittent sound system, the following should be considered a minimum.
  • Phrases: "Piece of sh*t," "Sh*thead," "Bumble d*ck," "Pencil d*ck," "D*ckless," "What are you going to do, floss your ass?" "Sad ass sack of bones," "Bitch" (dog)," "Weeble-wobble ass," "Shut up," "Nigger" (said by a black man), "Pain in the ass," "Jerking your chain," "You got your head up your ass," "Screw him," "Screw them," "Ass whooping," "Tight ass," "Balls" (testicles) and "You bet your ass."
  • Logan constantly dances and prances around in an exaggerated fashion (including plenty of mugging) that some kids may want to imitate.
  • One of Logan's partners spits down a building shaft for "good luck."
  • Lou forges a fake I.D. for Logan.
  • We see a miscellaneous suspect with tattoos all over his body.
  • Logan drives a police car like a madman, speeding and weaving through traffic, being airborne at one moment and driving through a red light the next. Carlson later speeds through traffic himself, imitating Logan.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • A mild amount of action-oriented and traditional suspense music occurs in a few scenes.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • Some songs contained lyrics that couldn't be understood so it's possible that some objectionable content could be present in them.
  • PROFANITY
  • Due to crowd noise and an intermittent sound system, the following should be considered a minimum.
  • 1 possible "f" word, 42 "s" words, 3 slang terms using male genitals ("d*ck"), 31 asses (2 used with "hole"), 20 hells, 14 damns, 3 S.O.B.s and 4 uses each of "G-damn" and "Oh my God," 2 uses of "Jesus" and 1 use each of "For Christ's sakes," "Swear to God" and "Holy Christ" as exclamations.
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • After making fun of an obese woman he's mistaken for his former girlfriend, Logan states that "there's just more cushion for the pushin.'"
  • After Carlson states that his and Logan's partnership is like a marriage, Logan replies that it's more like a one-night stand and states, "Wham, bam, thank you, officer."
  • Tulley briefly jokes about Logan being gay.
  • SMOKING
  • Tulley smokes a few times (and we see a large pile of used butts outside his car), while Lou smokes a cigar and a cop in a bathroom smokes.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • None.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • The fact that Logan's prison time (2 years) is glossed over in a matter of seconds and he comes out dancing, no worse for the wear.
  • The police interrogation brutality (through Logan posing as a cop) used for humor.
  • The fact that Logan gets away with everything (the diamond, posing as a cop, etc...) in the end.
  • Whether anyone (particularly an ex-cop) could pose as a cop and get away with it.
  • VIOLENCE
  • Deacon holds a gun on one of his partners and then shoots him in the shoulder, causing him to fall from the top of a building where he lands on top of a police car and dies.
  • A person breaks a large glass panel and then knocks a security guard to the floor.
  • A cop shoots at Logan while an explosion knocks a guard to the floor and cops then hold a gun on him.
  • Deacon holds his gun on Logan and then hits him, knocking him to the ground. Deacon later aims his gun at Logan again, causing Logan to saw through his zip line and then fall where he crashes through a building that's under construction.
  • An escaped suspect throws Carlson to the ground and knocks down another person before heading into a bathroom where Logan kicks open a bathroom stall door, hitting him.
  • Tulley tries to rob a store at gunpoint, where the store owner fires at him, causing Tulley to return fire at him with his semiautomatic weapon. Later, he shoots at the cops and Carlson fires back at him. Moments later, Logan hits Tulley over the head to get his gun from him.
  • Deacon slams Lou's face onto a desk and holds it there.
  • Acting like he doesn't know Tulley, Logan roughs up his friend in a police interrogation room (including pressing his face up against some two-way glass).
  • The cops hold their guns on some suspects in the back of a truck while Logan chases a fleeing suspect who tears through a screen door and then literally gets clotheslined in the backyard as he tries to escape.
  • In the police interrogation room, Logan puts a suspect in a headlock and then uses a door to squeeze him up against a wall.
  • Logan slams a man's head against a steering wheel after the man taunts him by saying that Logan can't touch him.
  • Deacon aims his gun at Logan and Tulley.
  • Acting like he doesn't like him, Logan punches Tulley in the nose.
  • A drug dealer gives Logan a gun to shoot Deacon. He does so, but only in the hand. As the drug dealer requests him to shoot and kill Deacon (to prove he's not a cop), the FBI and cops bust in and a gun battle ensues, accompanied by some explosions.
  • A person is shot in the chest.
  • Police shoot at an armored truck that Hardcastle then tries to run off the road. More police shoot at the truck that then crashes through a border gate and into several cars.
  • Logan fires a flare gun into the truck, pulls ahead and then stops in front of it, causing the truck to smash into his car and crash, damaging both vehicles.
  • Two men aim their guns at each other with one finally shooting the other one dead just as that one was pulling out a gun to shoot the second.
