Comedy: A wacky sergeant runs an Army motor pool and gets away with as much as he can.
PLOT:
Sgt. Bilko (STEVE MARTIN) is the wild and wacky noncom officer in charge of a motor pool at Fort Baxter which iscommanded by Colonel Hall (DAN AYKROYD). Hall is oblivious to the shananigans Bilko and his men are up to. Things change, however, when Major Thorn (PHIL HARTMAN) arrives. It seems that Bilko was responsible for Thorn having spent some time at a camp in Greenland, and Thorn wants his revengeby getting Bilko thrown out of the army (or at least sent to Greenland). This all revolves around a plot detail concerning a "hover tank" and whether or not it'll work.
WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they are drawn to Steve Martin, Phil Hartman or Dan Aykroyd -- yes.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG
For mild thematic elements and some language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
STEVE MARTIN plays Bilko who plays by his own rules and will do anything to not conform to Army regulations.
PHIL HARTMAN plays an officer with a grudge againt Bilko who will do anything to get Bilko thrown out of the Army.
DAN AYKROYD plays a stereotypical "oblivious to what's going on" officer.
Bilko asks a new straight laced soldier to roll back a car odometer .
A bride (left at the altar) says she hates Bilko and that "she'll kill him."
Bilko has no respect for his fiancé -- he stands her up at their wedding, and then leaves her alone in a bar while he goes off to play poker.
Bilko and the rest of his crew have no respect for the army (Which poses the question: Why are they enlisted?) and they make every attempt to get away with what they can and to cover up everything else.
Thorn lies to Bilko's girlfriend in order to try to steal her away.
Male soldiers and women are scene sleeping together in bunks and on a couch (all in one room) with some of the women "draped" over the soldiers. One of the women is wearing a "teddy" (but nothing scene).
The camera tilts up and down following the curves of a dancing woman in a tight dress.
Bilko enters a room with a woman (who turns out to be a soldier in drag) and says "I don't have sex on the first date. Thank God this is the third."
In one scene, Bilko tells his girlfriend that this is the most turned on he's ever been.
Homosexuality in the military is eluded to when soldiers, under a barracks inspection, fake which room is theirs, and a man ends up in a women's room with clothing he claims is his.
