QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: A pet detective must find a missing bat to prevent a tribal war from breaking out.
PLOT:
Ace Ventura (Jim Carrey) who's in retirement from the pet detective business, is hired back into active duty to find a missing bat. It seems the bat has spiritual meaning to two African tribes, the Wachati and Wachootoo, and if it isn't returned, the tribes will declare war on each other. Ventura investigates the case and mocks, mimics and generally acts goofy throughout the movie.
WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Yes. Especially if they saw the original or any other Jim Carrey film.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For crude humor.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • JIM CARREY plays the pet detective who spends the entire movie making weird faces and gestures, mocking others and behaving immaturely throughout. Ah yes, a parent's dream role model.
  • CAST, CREW, & TECHNICAL INFO

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Eastern monks drink champagne when Ace leaves their monastery.
  • People have cocktails at a reception.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Ace regurgitates food for a baby chick.
  • Ace and a tribal chief emerge from a hut covered in spit mucous (spitting is a sign of affection in the tribe).
  • There is a spoof on psychic surgery -- a tribesman "pulls out" a bloody organ from a man.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Upper class people at a reception look down on Ace.
  • Ace's constant mockery could be seen as disrespectful.
  • Some bounty hunters overall have bad attitudes.
  • FRIGHTENING/TENSE SCENES
  • In a spoof of the opening sequence of "Cliffhanger," Ace hangs from a wire trying desperately to save a racoon. His unsuccessful effort might seem tense to younger viewers.
  • A scene where Ace enters a hunter's trophy room (with animal heads on the wall) is shot in such a disorienting way that may prove scary for younger viewers.
  • The first view of the opposing tribe may be scary: It's night and they're dressed in weird costumes and carry sticks with skulls on the ends.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • A slide presentation shows bounty hunters with rifles.
  • A tribal chief pulls out a large knife when Ace steps on sacred ground.
  • A number of spears are held up to Ace's neck.
  • Two spears are thrown into Ace's thighs.
  • Bounty hunters are seen with knives and rifles.
  • A hunting rifle is pulled down from a wall.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "Poopy pants," "Sissy girl," and "Let's go kick some butt."
  • Ace is referred to as the man who "bends over and speaks from his rear."
  • Ace mocks almost everyone with exaggerated imitations.
  • During a slide presentation, Ace uses his hand's shadow to pick the nose of the person on the slide, then bite their crotch, and then pinch the nipples on another man.
  • A tribal chief spits in Ace's face (a sign of affection), so of course Ace must return this action.
  • Ace shoots "spit balls" at man standing on pole, and gets a tribal woman to join him.
  • Ace scrapes a knife and fork on a plate to make irritating sounds.
  • Ace pushes his own eye around with finger to gross out someone.
  • Ace pushes down hard on a pregnant woman's stomach and her baby pops out and across the room.
  • Ace thrusts his pelvis back and forth in exaggerated fashion when victorious.
  • Ace bends over, spreads his butt cheeks and does his best Tarzan impression.
  • Ace throws a hot cigarette lighter at a man he's chasing.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • Opening "Cliffhanger" take-off has suspenseful music.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • None.
  • PROFANITY
  • None.
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • Ventura makes the sounds of a Canadian moose during mating season.
  • When a flight attendant asks "Peanuts?" Ventura responds "Yes, it's bulky and I consider it a carry-on" (as he confuses "penis" for "peanuts").
  • Seeing a urine stain on a man's pants, Ace tells him, "I see you're a one shake man...don't have time for the extra jiggle."
  • Ace tells a squatting native that "your balls are showing."
  • We see the "virgin dance of seduction" but it's nothing more than a tribal teen essentially belly dancing.
  • The village virgin says she hasn't ever been with a man and then drops her top so that Ace can get a good look at her (we don't see anything -- except for Ace's reaction).
  • It's inferred that Ace is interrupted masturbating (after the above) when someone enters Ace's hut.
  • Ace is nude inside a mechanical rhino (due to extreme heat) but we don't see anything.
  • Ace is "delivered" by the rhino (as he crawls out of the mechanical rhino's rear end -- in a joke on birth) and is completely naked (we just see his butt).
  • Ace refers to a woman's breasts as "the amazing rack."
  • After tribal marriage, the couple goes into hut to consummate the marriage, but the husband comes out upset that she's already been "deflowered" and Ace runs away -- implying that he's the one.
  • SMOKING
  • None.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • None.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Making fun of other people and their behavior.
  • VIOLENCE
  • A racoon falls to it's death after Ventura loses his grip of it above a rocky gorge.
  • Ace manically drives a truck through the jungle and then crashes it into parking spot.
  • Ace hits a man with a riding crop after he sees the man do the same to a horse.
  • Ace strikes a man at a reception, knocking him out and then draping him over his shoulders (mocking an uppity woman draping a fur on her shoulders).
  • A monkey shocks a man with an electric zapper which knocks him backwards.
  • The same man has then been tied to chair and Ace holds a steak knife like a weapon, but then uses it only to scratch a plate and make irritating sounds.
  • Ace is thrown out of a moving jeep.
  • Ace is shot with tranquilizer darts many times.
  • A number of spears are held up to Ace's neck.
  • Ace pushes tribesman onto hot coals (so that he can walk across his back instead of the hot coals).
  • Ace must fight a wild tribesman in the "circle of death. Punches, biting, beating head back and forth on drums, etc...
  • The wild tribesman throws a spear at Ace which impales into Ace's thigh. Ace's assistant helpfully tosses Ace a spear but it also impales into Ace's other thigh.
  • Tribal leader threatens to kill other tribe and smash Ace's head onto rocks.
  • Bounty hunters knock out Ace with blow to the head and then tie him to raft which plummets over waterfall.
  • Ace fights with crocodile in river.
  • A bounty hunter threatens Ace with a knife.
  • Consulate slaps his security guard in the face.
  • Jungle animals wreak havoc in consulate's mansion.
  • Consulate pulls down hunting rifle but is knocked out by his own aide.
  • Ace drives a "monster truck" through mansion gates (destroying them) and then chases Consulate eventually running over his jeep, nearly running him over.
