It is unlike any other film yet made on the subject of apartheid, and an electrically expressive portrait of South African life then and now.

  • Coming Attractions: Other Willis H. O'Brien/Ray Harryhausen Creature Favorites - Trailers for this film as well as "The Black Scorpion," "The Valley of the Gwangi" and "Clash of the Titans."
  • Based on Ray Bradbury's short story, The Foghorn, this is the first film to originate from Bradbury's work. When a giant Rhedosauras, encased in ice for more than 100 million years, is awakened by an atomic explosion, it heads towards New York and manages to wipe out most of Coney Island before finally being destroyed. Directed by Eugene Lourie, the 1953 monster classic also marks the first time Ray Harryhausen had total control over special effects. (Studio Copy)

Although obviously dated in this day and age of often photo-realistic, computer generated special effects, this film played off the cold war fears regarding the dangers of nuclear radiation and is still rather fun to behold. If you're a fan of Harryhausen's stop-motion special effects work, this is a must-have DVD for your collection.

  • Coming Attractions: Other Willis H. O'Brien/Ray Harryhausen Creature Favorites - Trailers for this film as well as "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms," "The Valley of the Gwangi" and "Clash of the Titans."
  • They're big. They're bad. They scuttle along in caverns miles beneath the Earth - until an earthquake opens paths to the surface. Now, these monsters of genus Arachnida are invading our world with deadly force!

With top special effects co-designed by King Kong's Willis O'Brien, The Black Scorpion is horror with a sting more lethal than the king-sized ants that overran Los Angeles' sewers in the classic "Them!" Can humankind survive these invincible juggernauts? That fate rests on the shoulders of Hank Scott (1950s monster-movie stalwart Richard Denning) as the creatures rip a train from its track, snatch a helicopter from the sky and, in the film's most gripping sequence, battle each other in their subterranean lair. Watch out! (Studio Copy)

    Comments:
Back in 1981 and fresh off their respective successes with "Jaws" and "Close Encounters" and the first two "Star Wars" films, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas set out to recreate and pay homage to the cliffhanger serials they enjoyed watching as kids. The results was the fabulous, rousing and completely engaging "Raiders of the Lost Ark" that's easily withstood the passing of more than two decades.

Success, of course, meant the need for a sequel and the duo teamed up again for 1984's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom." Beyond introducing Steven to the future Mrs. Spielberg (Cate Capshaw), the film's more disturbing scenes also created the push for the creation of the PG-13 movie rating. With some engaging scenes (and a terrific opening sequence that's a blast to watch and pretty much outdid similar outrageous intros in the James Bond films), the prequel wasn't and still isn't quite up to its predecessor or successor, but it's certainly far from bad.

1989's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" returned the filmmaking team and star Harrison Ford to their previous forms and included a brilliant stroke of writing and casting genius in allowing the terrific Sean Connery to play Indy's father. That added a new (and needed) element to the series that allowed for more humor. With some terrific action sequences and fun prologue featuring then 19-year-old River Phoenix (playing Indy in his early days), the film is as engaging and fun as the first to watch and re-watch.

With a terrific bit of remastering regarding the film's visuals and especially the audio - the surround channels are quite active and more effective than ever - as well as a decent array of supplemental features on the fourth disc (although where's the audio commentary by Spielberg, Lucas, Ford and company?), this is a must-have set for any DVD collector. We highly recommend it.

  • Long before teams of technicians used computers to bring monsters and superheroes to the screen, one man equipped with little more than a makeup kit and remarkable acting talent dazzled moviegoers with his ability to transform himself into all manner of men, monsters and outcasts. That man was Lon Chaney. This 2-Disc Chaney celebration includes three of his major works. The Ace of Hearts, Laugh, Clown, Laugh and The Unknown.

These are in their most complete surviving versions. Narrated by Kenneth Branagh, Turner Classic Movies' compelling documentary Lon Chaney: A Thousand Faces explores Chaney's diverse career and very private personal life. They are a few of this genius's thousand faces - faces that continue to amaze and entertain. (Studio Copy here and below)

THE ACE OF HEARTS (1921) - When a secret group decides to murder a citizen, the assassin chosen will be the member of the group who draws the ace of hearts. Things don't go as planned in this morality tale of intrigue, love and the sacrifice of one man.

LAUGH, CLOWN, LAUGH (1928) - In one of his signature roles, Chaney is the circus clown who delights crowds with his performances, all the while coping with the heartache of a love that cannot be. Teenaged Loretta Young co-stars.

THE UNKNOWN (1927) - Chaney plays Alonzo the Armless, who makes his living in the circus by throwing knives with his feet, because allegedly has no arms. His assistant Nanon Zanzi (Joan Crawford in an early role), fearful of the touch of any man's hand, falls in love with him. Chaney actually strapped back his arms and learned to use only his feet for this role. Some of the tricks are done by a double but his performance as a contortionist is remarkable in this, possibly most bizarre performance. Tod ("Freaks") Browning directed.

LON CHANEY: A THOUSAND FACES (2000) - This definitive screen biography, which explores Chaney's diverse career and very private personal life, includes rare footage, archival photos and insightful commentary from co-stars, historians and others.

LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT (1927) - In this 2002 photo reconstruction by Rick Schmidlin, a presumed suicide could be a case of murder or maybe the supposed victim is alive! Chaney plays the dual roles of a Scotland Yard sleuth and a saw-toothed vampire in this offbeat mix of horror and whodunit.

    Comments:
For fans or those who've never heard of horror maestro Chaney (1883-1930), a.k.a. "The Man of a Thousand Faces" who popularized early versions of "The Phantom of the Opera" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," this is a decent introductory set collection of some of his work, and includes a terrific documentary about the actor and his work.

    THE VALLEY OF GWANGI
[The Valley of Gwangi] Length: 95 minutes
    Screen Formats: 1.85:1, 16x9
    Languages: English, French
    Subtitles: English, French, Spanish
    Sound: Dolby Digital Mono
    Sides: 1 (Dual Layer)
    Extras:
  • Scene selection/Jump to any scene.
  • Return to the Valley - 8+ minute featurette about the film and its effects work.
  • Coming Attractions: Other Willis H. O'Brien/Ray Harryhausen Creature Favorites - Trailers for this film as well as "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms," "The Black Scorpion" and "Clash of the Titans."
  • Cowpokes head into a mysterious Mexican valley to head 'em up and move 'em out. But they're not looking for little doggies. They're looking for great, big dinosaurs.

James Franciscus stars in this thunderous adventure featuring amazing special effects by Ray Harryhausen (The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, Clash of the Titans). Franciscus plays a Wild-West showman who leads his riding and roping crew into the title region where prehistoric giants still roam.

Thanks to Harryhausen wizardry, fantastic creatures lunge, fight and rampage in scene after dazzling scene (including an awesome sequence where the cowboys rope Gwangi, a razor-toothed allosaurus). Saddle up and join the excitement. (Studio Copy)

From 1969 comes this reworked King Kong type story in slick packaging that's based on a story by Willis O'Brien (who did the special effects for Kong). His protégé, the legendary Harryhausen, however, creates some fun sequences featuring the dinosaurs, that still look quite good after all of these years (and plenty of improvements in special effects).

I must admit that I have a soft spot in my heart for this film, as it was one of my favorite growing up as a kid hooked on stop motion effects. Accordingly, I recommend it for those in the same boat and/or anyone interested in how they used to do such work the old-fashioned (and entertaining) way.
