The Christmas spirit isn't served up with more observant hilarity than in this beloved adaptation of Jean Shepherd's holiday story. In 1940s Indiana, nine-year-old Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) dreams of his ideal Christmas gift: a genuine Red Ryder 200-shot Carbine Action Air Rifle.
But when gruff dad (Darren McGavin) and doting mom (Melinda Dillon) regularly respond with "You'll shoot your eye out!" Ralphie mounts a full-scale Santa-begging campaign. From writer/director Bob Clark and co-writers Leigh Brown and Jean Shepherd came this 1983 holiday film based in part on Shepherd's "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash." Smart, charming, often funny and quite memorable, the film never really become the perennial favorite among the masses, although it certainly has a large number of fervent fans, including yours truly.
With a terrific performance by young Billingsley (playing Shepherd who provides the adult voice-over narration) and a wonderful nostalgic period feel, this effort has withstood the tests of time and is every bit enjoyable and entertaining today as it was two decades ago when it was first released. We highly recommend it.

Released in 1994 and mixing Shakespearean style drama, effective comedy and comic relief characters, splendid animation (especially for the time), great songs, and an overall terrific sense of storytelling, the film remained the king of all animated films until just recently dethroned by Disney's own "Finding Nemo" (although in adjusted dollars it still reigns supreme).
Wonderfully re-mastered for DVD release and featuring a lion's share of supplemental features (including a fun, interactive virtual safari), this is a must-have release for any DVD collector. We highly recommend it.

Although I'm not even sure if they're still available on TV outside of the Cartoon Network (if even there), the old Bugs Bunny/Road Runner program once dominated Saturday morning TV programming like no other offering. And for good reason - they were smart, clever and funny - important ingredients to play to kids of all ages.
Now, 56 animated shorts featuring the Looney Tunes characters are available from Warner Home Video. From Bugs to Daffy and Sylvester to Foghorn in some of the more memorable cartoon shorts ever put on film, the set is terrific collection and a must-have offering for those who grew up watching these shorts or would like their kids to see what real Saturday morning cartoons are supposed to be like. We highly recommend this offering.

This holiday season Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) vows his clan will enjoy "the most fun filled family Christmas ever." Before you can sing "Fa-la-la-la-lah," he decks the halls with howls of folly in the perennial favorite National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

Chase and D'Angelo reprise their roles as the Griswold's in this third installment of the Vacation series from 1989 (following the original film from 1983 and its European sequel released in 1985). It mostly follows the same comedy formula that fueled the first two pictures (Clark's efforts of family "fun" always misfiring), this effort continues with the trend of new performers in the kids' roles (including Juliette Lewis - from "Cape Fear" fame - making her feature debut), but removes the "vacation" aspect by having the story take place at home.
The result is a film that's funny at times, but otherwise misses the comedy beat both by small margins and huge swing and misses. Fans of the series, however, will probably enjoy the offerings, this time done holiday style.
